His shirt to lose now you'd think? or will GS revert back to Pickford when he's fit? If Nick performs well in these next 2 games he'll be a hard man to drop, so the ball's in his court to take his chance and cement his place for the Euro's.

Good luck Nick hope you get a chance to show them what you can do.

Purely the fact we've had Tom Heaton, Michael Keane, Jack Cork, James Tarkowski and Pope called up for England whilst still at Burnley shows just how far we've come over the last few years.

Well done GS , showing some loyalty to Nick Pope.
Imo Nick deserves to be England number 1 but like a few other posters I feared that Henderson would play 1 game and if he did well would keep the jersey.
Will watch the game tomorrow mainly to see Nick in goal.

You are one in front of me which will be McDonald

I also saw, McDonald play for us, so I'm on 14. With the recent crop of internationals in he club, I agree that it does show how far we have come in the last few years, certainly something to be proud of.

I knew the number of players was 29 and knew Kelly & Connelly had the most caps. I’d no idea we were approaching 100 England caps in total.

I agree it’s an indicator of how far we’ve come, and how proud we should feel that our players are good enough for selection.

However, the fact that Southgate has already stated publicly he knows his team for the first game of the upcoming competition means unfortunately it doesn’t matter one iota how well Pope plays in the next two games, Pickford starts. Utter madness, as it seems form means nowt... which seems a contradiction to what he said when he took over.

I was far from impressed when Southgate got the job and I’m still far from impressed

Two of those players, Colin Bell and Frank Worthington, were shown on the big screen just this Thursday at Wembley during the minutes applause.

Looking at that list makes you wonder if all the oldies on this board are telling lies about how good some of our old players were.

I know a few of the ones they rave about were Irish or Scottish but the way they go on about some you’d have thought we’d have mustered together more caps than that.

That is precisely the point. Burnley has always been seen as an outpost... so,many who deserved Caps and so few getting recognition... but just did not get the caps they deserved. A mixture of I’ll luck, wars or lack of awareness Burnley has always been overlooked as a pool of talent, during the clubs best times... odd nods, generally rewarding an outstanding season with the odd cap.

John Angus 1 cap - described by England manager Walter Winterbottom as the finest ever debut. Never played again.

Ray Pointer 3 caps - scored in last one to take us to 1962 World Cup Finals. Never played again.

In 1966 we finished 3rd in the league but didn’t have one single player in the World Cup squad when we could have had any of Angus, Miller, O’Neil, Harris or Coates.

Only those involved in the selection will ever be able to explain what constantly baffled us and still does today with the omission of Tarkowski from the squad.

Agree entirely. All the players capped in the sixties deserved more caps, and others uncapped perhaps should have been. Add to that the lack of caps for Tarkowskiand maybe Ben Mee deserved a try and we should be over 100 caps now.

Wonderful step forward for the club under SD.
I remember listing our team in his first promotion season and highlighting how many senior pros we had and hungry young players with caps or age group caps.
Now we don’t have as many capped players but we have PL experience throughout the squad.

Haven't I read recently that Tarks pulled out of a squad and upset GS?
Hasn’t been picked since.

And, don't forget our two "Welsh wizards:" Leighton James and Brian Flynn.

You've got to remember that Burnley always had to sell a star every season. Some of the players who got an England cap were the ones who were first pick in being sold to bring the money in to the club to pay the other players' wages, Ralph Coates and Martin Dobson being examples. Then there were the ones who got their England caps after moving on from Burnley, Dave Thomas and Trevor Stevens. Also in the "deserved a cap" ranks, is Frank Casper - picked for the football league team and then injury curtailed his career.

I make my total 15 because I saw Billy Elliot play in the early 1950’s.

My dad loved Billy Elliott. “Hard as nails,” were the words he often used. Billy was our first post-war England international.

Did any of our other players from the 70s come close to a call up beyond Dobson?

Alan Stevenson was called up at the same time as Dobbo and was on the bench when Dobbo made his debut. We drew 3-3 at Man U that night without them.

There were strong suggestions that Paul Fletcher was close at one point but he went on to seriously struggle with injuries.

After that the decline set in. We had the likes of Steven & Phelan but they’d left us by the time they were called up.

According to the BBC Nick Pope has now moved ahead of Jordan Pickford in the pecking order as England's Number 1:

So, it would appear that Burnley's Pope is now first-choice between the sticks, overtaking Everton's Jordan Pickford in the pecking order.

"He has consistently played at a high level for his club," said Southgate.

"He is a very calm character and I really like his personality.

"We obviously knew he was not going to be overworked [against San Marino], but I am sure that will be different in the next games."

Pope, 28, a member of the 2018 World Cup squad, has made only five appearances for his country. He could become the first England keeper to concede no goals in his first six appearances when he faces Albania today.

Have I missed something that Southgate has said to indicate as such? Great news if true!

I think we all know that Pope is playing only because Pickford is out injured.

The BBC or whoever have just misinterpreted Southgate’s comments
