Precisely. What's Tarky supposed to do? Just let Longstaff head it in?tarkys_ears wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 12:49 pmNot lucky at all with the "pen"
If you aren't allowed to defend in your box you may as well get rid of defenders!

Decent first half against a poor team. If we can get the ball forward to Wood and Vydra better we will get more goals. Also, it wasn't a penalty.

Debatable is this as
"If an offence involves contact it is penalised by a direct free kick or penalty kick."
Tarks challenge although he got the ball could be adjudged as careless
"Careless is when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution. No disciplinary sanction is needed"
As it Tarks challenge involved contact it could be given as a pen.
I can see your position though and the ref could just deem it as dangerous play so its definitely not black or white.
The one thing it definitely was though is a foul

Sky Sports, saying it was a pen to Newcastle...
If so, it was also a pen on Mee
Right decision for me, no doubt

Newcastle must have Messi and Ronaldo on the bench by the way Sky are playing up their subs

Shelvey is their Grealish. He does everything for them and it's him plus 10 others.

Two good subs to have to be fair. Think we’ll see them sooner rather than later.Cirrus_Minor wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 12:59 pmNewcastle must have Messi and Ronaldo on the bench by the way Sky are playing up their subs

Yeah, shame JBG is so injury prone.jedi_master wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 12:55 pmWestwood and Gudmundsson have stood out for me today, best JBG has played for a long while IMO. We look very strong all over the pitch with Vydra and Wood very, very threatening.
Great performance but they will get stronger with Wilson and ASM to come on. We need to keep the pressure on.
Nevertheless, I think we should keep him contrary to Brady

Wood picks himself always as, but now we have another 1st choice in Vydra who is far better player than Barnes or Rodriguez
Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
Similar game to last week. Hope I am wrong. Wilson and SM to come no doubt. We need a second goal for sure and they look weak at the back but so we’re Saints !

If the offence is dangerous play, the punishment is an indirect free kick.

Have to say, I agree.
Takes boot was high/dangerous. Also thought Mee’s should have been before that and suspect that played its part.

As I get older, I’m finding that technology is overtaking me a little. I’m not a technophobe by any means, but there are certainly things I don’t fully understand. I never thought I wouldn’t understand the rules of football though. And then VAR happened. What else could Tarky have done? He’s a central defender. He played the ball. But by the new rules, that I no longer understand, it should have been a penalty to the Geordies? I suspect the new season will be my last as a paying spectator. And that makes me sad.

If it had been Longstaff doing the kicking looking for a goal and Tarks with his head trying to defend it, it would easily be a free kick and we'd all be claiming it as a free kick!Gordaleman wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 12:55 pmPrecisely. What's Tarky supposed to do? Just let Longstaff head it in?

How am I wrong? I said that if it's dangerous play it's not a penalty, that's an indisputable fact.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 1:03 pmContact means direct free kick so I think you're wrong. But hey I've explained in my previous post so if you disagree thats up to you
Maybe there's an argument that it wasn't dangerous play, it was a different offence, but that's not what I said or passed comment upon.
All the pundits and commentators were saying dangerous play, for what it's worth.

Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
Doesnt matter. If the ref judges a challenge was careless, reckless or made with excessive force then it doesnt matter if the player won the ball first as it is a foul and if as part of that challenge contact was made the free kick is direct.
Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
A neither the ref or the VAR thought that applied. Correct.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 1:08 pmDoesnt matter. Disagree. It wasn't a challenge, he was clearing it. He wasn't aware player was there. We need a resident ref to give their opinion.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 1:08 pmDoesnt matter. Just to clarify I am debating if the challenge was deemed as a careless challenge or a dangerous challenge under the laws of the game.Tall Paul wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 1:07 pmHow am I wrong? I said that if it's dangerous play it's not a penalty, that's an indisputable fact.

You stated you thought it was dangerous play so thats where I disagree and think that opinion is wrong.
I agree with you that if dangerous play was awarded it would not be a pen
Hope that clears up where we are actually disagreeing

Foul on Tarks for me
Kicks the ball when no opposition player is in his eyeline
Longstaff comes in late from Tarks blindside knowingly ducks his head into the ball when it’s clear Tarks is already in the process of kicking the ball Longstaff catches Tarks foot late with his head
