A message for Willie Irvine

Post by ClaretTony » Sun Apr 25, 2021 1:53 pm

Willie - you were the greatest goalscorer I've ever seen play for Burnley by a country mile but I have to inform you that you are no longer the last player to score a top flight hat trick away from home.

I'm sure the commentator mentioned that it was the first, first half hat trick away from home this century in the top division. Michael Owen was the last to do it in a 4-1 away win at Newcastle in August 1998.

That's over 8,000 matches!

Well done Chris Wood.

Yes, and only the third in PL history I think he said. Hopefully Tony will reflect that in the match report because it exemplifies his wonderful performance today.

Chris Wood in excellent company with a former player of the calibre of Willie Irvine, the best goalscorer I have ever seen playing for us.

Willie Irvine is a hell of a name to be compared with, but for his consistency at this level Wood deserves to be mentioned alongside the great Willie Irvine.

Willie Irvine got a first half hattrick in the 4-3 away F A Cup defeat at Spurs in 1965-66.

I was there! Unfortunately Alan Gilzean also got a hattrick.

Willie said that he was proud to have been the last one to do it prior to this weekend.

I was there for that as well. We were two up in about ten minutes. Probably the best match I've ever seen.

There were three hat tricks in London that day, as Geoff Hurst got one for West Ham as well.

I wasn't there for the last top flight away pen at Fulham but I was at Spurs, my first ever visit to White Hart Lane, for the cup tie a month later. I went on a joint special train with the Blackburn fans going to West Ham.

Don't wish to be pedantic but Willie's hat-trick in the FA Cup was scored at both ends. Two in the first half and one in the second half. :?

Christ how times have changed. You can't even make your own way to BollEwood under your own steam nowadays, never mind travel on the same train.

We had one half of the train and they had the other half but you could walk through.

Coaches from Rawtenstall for those two fixtures were shared by both sets of fans, leaving Rawtenstall at 5am.

I was at school in Blackburn (St. Mary’s College), in the late 50’s, early 60’s and although there was friendly rivalry between the fans it was not the intense hatred of later years. We even had the Rovers come and play a match when we had the opening of our floodlights. Thus Silkyskills had a pleasant joint journey to London on shared coaches.

We lost, of course,4-3 but Blackburn got a 3-3 draw and a replay. Don't know who won the replay. Journey down was infinitely better than the return.

Blackburn must have won the replay, they got to the quarter finals that year.
