If there are 4 English teams in the finals of both competitions only the top 3 in the Premier go through next year.
I bet a few clubs are praying Arsenal don't turn it round.

That can't be correct, the only scenario that it becomes top 3 is if Arsenal win surely ?. If United win then 4th gets the CL place and Arsenal get midweek off !!

The maximum number of clubs any nation can have in the Champions League is 5. Given that both the Champions League winner and Europa League winner automatically qualify for the Champions League, the only scenario in which the 4th placed team in the Premier League would miss out on the Champions League is if both the Champions League and Europa League winners finish outside the top 4. The most likely scenario that would result in this outcome would be for Arsenal and Chelsea to win the Europa League and Champions League respectively, and for Chelsea (and Arsenal) to finish outside the top 4. The chances of this coming to pass seems low.

Cardiff is right, only 5 teams can qualify for champions league, but wouldn't be outlandish to suggest that Chelsea win the champs league and Arsenal win Europa. Arsenal aren't finishing in the top 4, and Chelsea's run in isn't as favorable as West Hams. Would feel bad for Hammers if they finished 4th and didn't qualify though, feels unfair.

It already feels unfair that the Champions League will be won by a team who weren’t champions

I agree ...
I think they should rename it something more catchy....
Perhaps call it
"The European Super League"
or something like that

Maybe the Champions were not good enough...just saying.

Surely you want the current best team to win the tournament, not the team that was the best 12 months earlier?

Agreed. Not outlandish, but I would say quite unlikely that all 3 of these happen, which is what would be required for 4th not to qualify for the Champions League:
- Arsenal win the Europa League final (4-1 odds say)
- Chelsea win the Champions League final (2-1)
- Chelsea fail to finish in Premier League top 4 (3-1?)
So overall guess would be something like 25-1 odds of this scenario happening
