Tony Philliskirk
Tony Philliskirk
Random question, but was he really booed after scoring a hat trick? Or is it a myth? Was he subbed off and it was the decision that was booed?
I saw the highlights on YouTube yesterday and they were decent finishes.

Re: Tony Philliskirk
I was at that game. I don't remember him being booed but his skills as a footballer seemed to be ignored by some wanting to emphasise a lack of pace/mobility at that time in his career.

My dads least favourite ever player!
I can’t remember much of him except that he was massive and had incredibly blonde hair.

It’s a story that’s been exaggerated over time.

Not helped that he was a Bolton "legend" with what used to happen with that lot not long before he arrived here.

Re: Tony Philliskirk
He certainly wasn't universally popular. Got a fair bit of stick in the fanzine(s) I recall.
He once had the away end in stitches at Mansfield: After he careered over the advertizing hoarding and crashed out of sight on the other side, he slowly raised his head up and comically looked round before pulling himself up. If he hadn't been a footballer he could've been a great physical comedian.

Back in the day (those days!) we signed some pretty rubbish players, but we also signed (almost inadvertently!) some really good ones and to my mind Philiskirk fits into the latter category. He was more than decent at that level and definitely gave us a much needed boost at the time.

The team were booed off against Barnet at half time, then we came out after the break and thrashed them with Philliskirk scoring a three goals.

Without Philliskirk's goals we wouldn't have gone up in '94.

Had a brew with him the other day whilst watching a Burnley Under 18s game. He seems like a decent guy.

He's a decent coach these days, isn't he?

Re: Tony Philliskirk
Not sure if he’s any good or not but the Under 18s seem to win most games I watch them so I suppose he must be fairly decent.
Often bump into him around the non league grounds too whilst he’s watching members of his squad who are out on loan.

Jedi-master, if you thought Philliskirk had incredibly blonde hair, you never saw Ray Pointer. Now that was Blonde and all the women wished they had his hair colour.

Yes, he was a referee for a while.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 10:06 amWasn't he part of a fast-track programme to get ex-players to become refs? Not sure what happened but I guess he realised being a ref is more hassle than it's worth.

Re: Tony Philliskirk
Burnley crowd didn’t take to him at all but he was knackered with an injury when we signed him. Yes he was genuinely booed when Mullen took him off that day.

He got a good ovation from the majority.

Tony Phil, Tony Phili, Tony Philliskirk
He gets the ball and he scores a goal,
On his first game then does f*ck all
Tony Philliskirk
I think he scored on his debut away at Plymouth on what was a long and terrible day

Re: Tony Philliskirk
Purely from memory; I'd have been about 16, (so pre-alcohol stage)I reckon:
He scored about 9 /20 Appearances in his first season, including the hat trick.
He definitely got boo'd. I know this specifically because my dad was doing the booing. I cant vouch for how many others joined in.
He always seemed to be offside.
I felt a bit sorry for him, you could see there was a decent player in there, as his record previously was good and his first touch was decent.
It looked like his knees had gone, it was never going to work out.
It always felt in that early-mid 90's period that the fans 'needed' a claret to dislike. Unfortunately for him, he was one of them. Luckily that doesn't happen so much these days.
Glad he's back and doing well.

Re: Tony Philliskirk
I know. It’s a nonsense but you know what our crowd can be like. There’s a story that Mullen offered money for him only to be told he was having knee surgery at the time and he apparently said it wasn’t a problem.
He did seem to be out injured more than he was available but played on at Cardiff for a while after.
I’ve only spoken to him once since he came back a couple of years ago but I’m told he’s a good bloke.

We had and still have numpties who boo our own players. I liked 'Smokin' Tony. He could finish but was clearly knackered when we bought him.

Remember him wanting to be a ref and saying he fancied making it for Japan and Korea 2002
Also remember his son being highly rated as a young lad.
To make anyone feel older than they do. His lads now 30.

Re: Tony Philliskirk
You'd get your money's worth for Tony's shirt though.
All the player's shirts cost the same to sponsor but depending on their size you got more/less fabric for your money. The best value we ever offered on shirt sponsorship was Ronnie Jepson's shirt which came in a £0.56/square inch.
Second best value was Peter Swan's shorts.
Worst value was Luke Chadwick's sock ties.
