There’s not been much in the way of confirming or denying our interest in Maxwell Cornet which is the one link that excites me, and although we haven’t done anything much really other than Defour in recent years from abroad, for some reason I feel that the silence may be golden on this one with the club playing it’s cards close to their chest. Will silence be golden ? I’m hoping so

JAHANBAKHSH Possibly going to Feyenorrd. Brighton paid £17m for him and got nothing. Their big spending scattergun approach doesn’t seem to work.

Another from the Dutch league with a great goal scoring record, reminds me of Alfonso Alves who Boro bought. Some top players have come from the Dutch league but many duds.

Doesn’t seem to work, it’s kept them in the top division for a few good seasons now so they must be doing something right, pound for pound our financial model is savvier but not many teams will outdo us in that department so nothing unusual there.

Jurgen Locadia! I bought the domain name when he moved over here (he hadn’t bothered to secure it himself) and he’s been absolute toilet even for FC Cincinnati

The athletic reporting Albrighton is very unlikely. Cornet is ambitious.

They are also reporting that we have rejected a bid for Benson of 650k rising to 1m

Shame about Albrighton. He would’ve been a great signing. Surprised we’ve turned that down for Benson. Maybe he has a chance with us.

Neither a surprise, really.

Re: Cornet, can’t say I knew anything about him until a few weeks ago. Does strike me as ambitious given what I’ve read since. That said, we should be seeking ambitious signings if we want to progress - I just hope we have other options we’re also pursuing for the wide positions.

Is the Cornet deal branded as ambitious because it’s highly unlikely, or because it would signal our intent in the market?

Someone with the athletic submission would have to answer that. I just copied and pasted the headline

Athletic saying Lyon were asking £20 million for him earlier in the year when Leeds were interested. However price may since have dropped due to tough financial picture in France. They go on to say that Burnley "completing a deal for him will prove difficult"

I can't see why we'd be pursuing yet another centre back, especially if as reported JT is staying for the next 12 months, that will mean we've got Mee, Tarks, Collins & Kev Long as 4 options to play in that position, and I'd say right mid is a far greater priority, we've let Brady go, quite rightly in my view, but in making that call we've only got Dwight and an injury prone JBG to play wide, I know at a push we can deploy Brownhill there, but it's not really his natural berth, and he's never looked comfortable out wide for all his best endeavours, so if funds are tight and we only add one more signing I'd be prioritising a right winger above all else, as that's the one area where we're weak in, and this increases the onus on DM to provide our creativity.

They would have to be prepared to spend big on a player Burnley have no intention of selling and who is under contract until the summer of 2024, with an additional 12-month option on top of that.

Nick Pope is one player Burnley may have been preparing to fight off interest in this summer but the knee injury he suffered towards the end of last season, causing him to miss out on a place in England’s European Championship squad, has meant no interest has materialised.

The 29-year-old is going nowhere, and returned to the club two weeks before pre-season officially began to continue his rehabilitation following surgery on that knee. He is being eased back into training.

Pope’s clear status as first-choice in goal has meant Bailey Peacock-Farrell’s game time has been extremely limited, starting just eight games since signing from Leeds United two years ago.

Despite the progress being made in training, Peacock-Farrell needs consistent first-team games to truly blossom, so Burnley are open to loaning him out for the upcoming season — preferably to a Championship club. Sheffield Wednesday are understood to be keen but despite their history they were relegated to League One last season and the third tier may be seen as too much of a drop for Northern Ireland’s 24-year-old No 1.

One out will mean one in and Burnley’s top goalkeeper target is understood to be Wayne Hennessey, who is a free agent after the expiry of his Crystal Palace contract. The 34-year-old would provide a short-term but experienced option with almost 200 Premier League games and 96 Wales caps — including a European Championship semi-final — under his belt.

Burnley are still understood to be interested in bringing another centre-back in following the capture of Collins but that does not appear to be as high on their list of priorities. Since initial contact early in the summer, there is understood to have been no real progress made on any potential deals for long-term target Joe Worrall of Nottingham Forest or Liverpool’s Nat Phillips.

Jimmy Dunne’s departure from the club was confirmed earlier this week as he joined Championship side Queens Park Rangers on a three-year deal. The 23-year-old, who was been called up by the Republic of Ireland but is yet to win a senior cap, wanted a new challenge and to play regular football. That was unlikely to happen at Burnley as he would have found himself the fifth-choice central defender behind Ben Mee, James Tarkowski, Kevin Long and Collins.

Tarkowski is expected to stay at Turf Moor this season and run down the final year of his contract. Burnley would not consider a sale in this window for less than £20 million, plus add ons. In a COVID-19 affected market, for a 28-year-old with less than 12 months to go until he becomes a free agent, that stance is putting teams off.

Young centre-back Richard Nartey signed a new contract this month, a one-year deal with the option of an additional 12 months, having played consistently for the under-23s side last season without ever featuring for the first team despite being on the bench 11 times in the Premier League and FA Cup. Nartey impressed Burnley’s then under-23s manager Steve Stone, who has now stepped up to first-team coach, and emerged as a dressing room leader. It is uncertain whether the 22-year-old will be loaned out for the coming season.

Bobby Thomas, a 20-year-old central defender, has returned from a successful half-season loan spell in League Two with Barrow that saw him make 18 starts and there is a decision to be made on his future too.

Meanwhile, Burnley have rejected a bid of approximately £650,000 plus add-ons potentially rising to around £1 million from Barnsley for central midfielder Josh Benson, The Athletic understands.

The 20-year-old, who signed a new two-and-a-half-year deal in December, made 12 first-team appearances for Burnley in all competitions last season, including two Premier League starts, as Dyche fought through an injury crisis.

Benson is not going to rush into any decision on his future and is fully focused on pre-season, where he hopes to make an impression and force his way permanently into Dyche’s first-team plans. His goal is to become a first-team player for Burnley, and he returned 10 days early for pre-season in a bid to improve his chances.

As with Peacock-Farrell, though, he needs consistent game time in the coming season.

Depending on how pre-season goes, if first-team opportunities remain out of reach, then the situation will be reconsidered. Barnsley remain keen and there are several other Championship clubs, including Luton Town, Millwall and Birmingham City, who have registered interest in taking the player on loan.

If the article is true, good to hear of the attitude from Benson returning to pre-season training 10 days early to improve his chances of regular first team action.

SD and the coaches clearly think highly of Benson, hence why he was given a brief taste of PL action last season, and even if he provides an option off the bench in the latter stages of games he's worth having in the 1st team squad.

If he's putting in the work to improve his fitness and overall game that's great to hear, and attitude is a major factor in making it in the professional ranks, so if he's got that in his locker he may yet have a chance of pushing for a 1st team spot, and if we as a club can produce a gem or two from our academy that could go a long way to saving us millions in wages and transfer fees.

Kind of agree in the main, it’d be interesting to see the stance if a bid got accepted for 1 of the targets whilst another acceptable bid got offered for JT, a combination of them 2 things could bring about some sort of a decision.

With Dunne and Gibson leaving and only Collins in the squad is even smaller. Alan Pace talking about all sorts but needs to get to grips with strength of the First Team .

Got his chance when we had injuries

When everyone available he doesn't get a look in

Still only 21, so a loan to the likes of Barnsley will show if he has potential

I know Neco Williams plays primarily RB. Do you believe our interest in him is for a long term replacement for Bardsley and Lowton (the lovely Chesterfield Cafu) but also a short term cover for RW? If we’ve reignited any interest in Williams, and that’s a big IF, it would be potentially because Albrighton and Cornet are looking far more unlikely.

I do know that Collins can put in a shift at RB (and also as a Midfielder.)

Dyche really does like a player who can put a shift in, in multiple positions a la Erik Pieters #ep23.

Williams crossing ability is quite good, he can defend, he’s quite athletic, and with some time training with Dyche he could be a proper Burnley winger.

Now I’ll also say it would not be the most ambitious or flashy move either. It would not be a sign of intent in terms of nabbing players we REALLY want for these positions. However as another poster pointed out, sometimes our dealings in the transfer window/market are down to who’s available and who is actually willing to come.

His brother is in the academy here and is a promising talent from what I understand.

Anyway- what are your thoughts on Williams and my assessment? I’m willing to take the “you’re off your rocker.” It’s just a hunch but I’m assuming if he can play wing back he may be able to play wide in a 4-4-2.

I wonder if Benson is being kept in and around the First Team in preseason until and if we manage to bring a Wide right player in ? If we dont then Brownhill is the cover for the perpetually injured JBG; if we do he reverts to his more central role, and Benson can go...on loan or permanently.

It will be virtually impossible for Benson to improve by staying at Burnley and playing about 3 games a season. For me he's at an age where he needs regular football, and with Cork, Westwood, Brownhill and Stephens all ahead of him in the pecking order I don't see how his career progresses by staying with us.

It’s odd that you mention that. He shined in that game against Manchester City in a big way. I even remember one of the commentators saying something to the effect of “I think Josh Benson has to be the shining light for Burnley this match.” After that match the lad earned himself a professional deal AND Dyche commented that he was very pleased with him. I’m guessing Benson needs some work training and playing. A championship loan might not be so bad. However, if he was surplus to requirements/not good enough I’m sure we would have sent him off with a big sell on and wished him well. 1m£ is nothing to balk at. Swans didn’t even want to give us that for Jimmy Dunne.

Clearly Benson has a future at this level but he has A LOT of work ahead of him. I believe he and Dyche know that.

It can be depending on the circumstances, i think the reason why Collins was so wrapped up so fast is because of the club Stoke, we seem to have a good relationship with them & have done business in the past with them without problems.

After watching England play 3 at the back with FBs as the widemen I’d say we can play that system.
………………………Pope……..
….Collins(Phillips)..Tarks..Mee
Lowton……..Westwood……Cork…..Taylor
……………………..McNeil….
……….Wood….. best of the rest

If we go behind bring JBG on for Lowton or Collins, dependant on opposition. McNeil has tge option to go back wide if the situation calls for it.

Makes the purchase of a wide right less important.

Benson to Barnsley on loan would make a lot of sense. They are club going places right now, with some excellent players and narrowly missing out on promotion via the play offs. They are likely to be top end of the Championship next season and that would do him the world of good imo. Losing their manager recently to Wolves might not help them though.

Maybe send out on loan again but I would take the cash

After watching England play 3 at the back with FBs as the widemen I’d say we can play that system.
………………………Pope……..
….Collins(Phillips)..Tarks..Mee
Lowton……..Westwood……Cork…..Taylor
……………………..McNeil….
……….Wood….. best of the rest

If we go behind bring JBG on for Lowton or Collins, dependant on opposition. McNeil has tge option to go back wide if the situation calls for it.

Makes the purchase of a wide right less important.
That systems would just not work for us at all. Your three centre backs all have to be very good on the ball and require pace to recover when people break down either side.
You also require Wing backs that have good delivery and can get up and down the pitch.

I don't know why you think 3 at the back won't work? It would end up 5 at the back a lot granted.

But we let lots of crosses come in to the box anyway, so having 3 very good defenders block them is a winner. The far side full back would tuck in or are you thinking both wing backs will bomb on?

When Burnley play bad it tends to be because teams walk through our centre, if teams are forced wide we seem to stay in the game easier.

I am just very much of the opinion our midfield is over run as it is. When defending our wing backs would tuck in to make a back five. We would never get out, because our CBs haven’t got that ability to pass out

All part of the plan, they had the next manager already lined up and it will essentially be more of the same - they are a multi-club operation with a focus on developing talent and moving it on quite quickly - owners are in it to make money, glory is a by product that they would happily take but it is about talent sales in the main

It is over run because other teams have more numbers in there, interchanging positions etc..

The other side to it, is if we are sitting deep there is more chance of the players going forward. When we have a player start high up the pitch, most times he has to pass backwards.

I don't know how Dyche will set us up this season as the good footballing Burnley had some very good results, but also got carved open easy against Leeds and Liverpool at the end. He might want to revert to type until we get going or he might have been promised better players so the brand is easier to sell?

The athletic reporting Albrighton is very unlikely. Cornet is ambitious.

They are also reporting that we have rejected a bid for Benson of 650k rising to 1m
I thought the Athletic was somewhere to read better stuff but all this is just regurgitating what Nixon said previously.

They are a club where the key people have gone. Best player was reckoned to be Alex Mowatt and he’s followed the manager to West Brom while the chief exec, the brains behind it all, had gone to Forest.

The new manager is Markus Schott who I know nothing about while Khaled El-Ahmad has become the new chief exec.

The Athletic has met it's subscriber targets and is still losing money (due to discounting) and are struggling to sell themselves to media conglomerates - at least 2 have walked away from talks in the last couple of months, it is going to be a tricky year for them, they inly seem to recruit subscribers when their offers are on and those rates are clearly not working for them, they need to attract more subscribers or start introducing advertisers
