Whether Dyche has money or not he wont make sweeping changes.
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Btw i think Dyche is a fantastic manager.

Anybody that thinks we will be signing 4/5 players will be disappointed.

Brownhill is crap. Wouldn’t get in any other premier league team including the promoted clubs.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 8:35 amBrownhill has been a top signing and continues to impress ,look at his interceptions
We need a flying right winger someone to give us forward momentum and anyone who plays sideways or back wants dropping
Good grafter but lacks any kind of technical ability.
The interception stats are pointless it equates to just under one more interception per game than what Westwood and cork.

I think Brownhill was thrown in too soon and he does look short of what is required. We need more than just off the ball graft. Part of this though will be down to Dyche’s instructions. I’m not convinced he offers anything more than Hendrick did. An upgrade/alternative is definitely required.

Thinks it’s fair to say he isn’t a Burnley fan best just to ignore. Think the stupidity comes from day 1 when Josh signed and he asked him to follow him back on Twitter. Clearly he didn’t and he’s felt a bit hurt.Stalbansclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 9:41 amTop Burnley fan there...."Brownhill is crap".

He is also the only person I have seen use the new owners as the reason he doesn’t go to games, not that he probably ever did more a free illegal stream and whinging on his sofa is his level of support
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Brownhill has more technical quality than Westwood imo and is better off the ball. Really hope this is a breakout season for him

I think that will depend if he's stuck out on the wing trying to plug a gap.
Hopefully he'll get a proper run in the middle, especially if we play five in there more often.
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
It’s a stretch to suggest that Brownhill has been a top signing, so far. A top signing would have made a position his own, not been an OK back up be that in the middle or on the right. He’s not had the easiest of starts to be fair to him.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 8:35 amBrownhill has been a top signing and continues to impress ,look at his interceptions

He now needs to back up some admittedly impressive stats with better all round play and start owning his position in centre midfield.
I’ve said it before, this is a big season for Brownhill.
He had a performance (I can’t recall who against) that really stood out for me, last season. We need to see more of that - there’s a player in there - I just hope that he can show that much more than he has to date.

We are short of a CM with creative ability , we have never replaced Defour. We can pick fault with all our current midfielders predominantly because they are in their twilight years, but its difficult to change. I think an athletic sitting CM protecting the back four , plus Westwood and Cork/or Brownhill can still work. Brownhills pressing, tackling and harassing suits our style of play, particularly playing good sides away. In a two central midfield I would prefer him on the bench

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Collins was an excellent recruitment which in my opinion was completed early doors in the expectation/ hope that Tarks would move for big money - money that would go towards strengthening the squad I.e. backing the manager.
That could still happen of course but I don’t believe that there is any more “new” money and any more significant signings in this window will depend on another sale (possibly Dwight). The clubs who have the funds to finance such a big deal already have large, expensive squads and generally do not need to bed a player into their team until after the season has begun.
Therefore in the meantime hard bargaining will happen and transfers wont be made until the last minute. Everyone knows this and it’s what our manager has had to contend with every year. So, unless a bargain (like the Brownhill deal) drops into his lap we should expect to see last year’s team start the season.

Big season for Brownhill coming up. Not sure he'll get a decent run of games playing central unless Cork or Westwood get injured though, which is the problem.
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
All out midfielders are similar. Decent but nothing special.
Hard workers … grafters exactly what Dyche wanted in a midfielder.
Flair is not an option. Flair is luggage we cant afford to carry.

I suspect you may well be right , but if so it rather begs the question as to when do the club intend to replace all the over 30s in the squad? Yet another window spent kicking the can down the road is just storing up problems.IWOODLOVETT wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 10:49 amCollins was an excellent recruitment which in my opinion was completed early doors in the expectation/ hope that Tarks would move for big money - money that would go towards strengthening the squad I.e. backing the manager.

Wrong, we've shown what we can do when we have flair.
The issue I suspect is finding the right flair player at the right price.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Why pick out Brownhill? It's a big season for any of our squad that get regular starts. Every season has been and this one is no exception. We haven't got a player that can come up with the spectacular, dig us out of a hole or take a game by the scruff of the neck and dominate. We never have had, certainly not in this league. We're a team of grafters, hard, diligent workers with the very odd moment of inspiration from someone like Dwight McNeil. A number of our higher profile players have had their moments of indifferent form, Mee, Wood, for example but they've come through it presumably through hard work on the training field but also the support of those people they see each day on the training ground. Having seen Josh Brownhill as much as other posters on here I know he doesn't hide and I also know he's no wide right player. Personally, I'm happier when he's in the starting eleven but my expectations of him are no more or less than any other player. He appears to have energy to burn so maybe with the right selection rather than injuries to others dictating where he plays, a player to respect rather than criticise for what he doesn't do may emerge.

Actually the above is just a blatant lie. I actually liked the look of Brownhill when he first came into the side. I even got into a debate with Claretony by stating he was better than Hendrick.
However after the 40 odd below par appearances at this level I have come to the conclusion he is simply not good enough. I would keep him in the squad as he is a good grafter and can fill in now and then (similar to Long) but for me he should be knowhere near the starting eleven.

You said he was "crap", how do you expect to have your views taken seriously when you come out with stuff like that ?
It's an opinion that you are entitled to but putting it in those terms is straight out of the playground.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I've said for a while that Brownhill ought to be played as a defensive midfielder or not at all. His biggest strengths are his ability to cover lots of ground, make interceptions (we all know his stats here), and recycle the ball with quick, short passes. What he is not very good at is the offensive side of the game, and again, we all know his stats for goals and assists.
Those attributes say to me he should be deployed in the N'Golo Kante/ Idrissa Gueye role. Sitting in front of the back four, winning the ball back when we turn it over, and getting us going again by passing to someone better than he is. It's a hugely important role in a side and one I think he could be great at. I remember seeing Brownhill linked with other PL clubs a few months ago, Southampton being just one if I recall, and it'd be no surprise to me to see other teams fancying him to do that job.

Brownhill seems the type who will respond to and enjoy having the crowds back. Big season for him but he does have the traits to make it at this level I think. Agree with the above he needs to show more attacking wise, it’s interesting because at Bristol City he actually played a more attacking role from midfield and ended up with a good amount of goal contributions (17 goals 12 assists in 160 games) not bad going.

He showed more ability & promise at Bristol city because that was his level he’s just not made the step up we all wanted/expected from him, you can’t force something that’s not there, he’s a good championship player & I think that’s all he’ll ever be, as others ever said he’s ok as a sub & playing every now & again but shouldn’t be starting really.RVclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 12:57 pmBrownhill seems the type who will respond to and enjoy having the crowds back. I think this season we will see if he’s ready to ‘step up’. Don’t forget, he was man of the match in arguably our two best performances of the season away at Arsenal and Everton.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 1:06 pmHe showed more ability & promise at Bristol city because that was his level he’s just not made the step up we all wanted/expected from him, you can’t force something that’s not there, he’s a good championship player & I think that’s all he’ll ever be, as others ever said he’s ok as a sub & playing every now & again but shouldn’t be starting really.

Sorry wrong thread to discuss this but wanted to add my thoughts on Brownhill. At Bristol City he played in a more attacking position all be it at a lower level but he can clearly play in a more attacking way although he hasn’t shown it really yet for us. In the main I think this is because he is doing the job he is asked to do by the manager rather than an inability to do it. I like him and think we will start to see the best of him this season assuming the shackles are released a little. This is a big season for him I agree having said that if he is doing what he is asked to do by the Manager as he clearly was last season, then what does my or anyone else’s opinion matter????

Yes we will see & I hope you are right, I think it’s a leap to magically think he’s going to improve massively, he will have odd good games I don’t think he’s a bad footballer overall but doubt he will consistently perform to a reasonable standard for the PL over the course.

Brownhill is being deployed in a different system than that at Bristol. Thinks it's very harsh to say he hasn't had the same number of assists or goals because "he hasn't made the step up".Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 1:06 pmHe showed more ability & promise at Bristol city because that was his level he’s just not made the step up we all wanted/expected from him, you can’t force something that’s not there, he’s a good championship player & I think that’s all he’ll ever be, as others ever said he’s ok as a sub & playing every now & again but shouldn’t be starting really.
You don't end up with one of your top stats as interceptions if your playing as a creative midfielder.

But as another poster said which I agree with is that his best position is in front of back 4 as a holding midfielder breaking up play, so why would you position him somewhere else on the field where he’s less effective? Threading passes through is more difficult when you are faced with VVD & rudiger ect than championship defenders, I’m not only person who thinks he’s inadequate for this level & will never make the grade.Conroy92 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 2:55 pmBrownhill is being deployed in a different system than that at Bristol. Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
This from the Bristol City forum:
“When Brownhill plays he isn't able to attack as freely as he needs to be allowed because we rely too heavily on our midfielders to get between the ball and the opposition when defending, so if he ventures forward he's always having to be aware of the counter against us.”
Brownhill, from what I’ve seen / read wasn’t utilised hugely differently to the way he is being at Burnley.
Comparing his stats in the Championship to those in Premier League and expecting similar results, is though an excessively high expectation.

I'm surprised someone would say Brownhill is crap or has been crap, he hasn't been a stand out player but he's been solid, fit the framework and plugged gaps out wide. He's definitely a good option, I think he's capable of showing more going forward but calling him crap is way OTT.

I actually agree with you, I think he may be more suited for us as a defensive midfielder, his interception stats particularly were very good. I also don't think he'd look out of place concentrating on a defensive role rather than "an all rounder" of which I'd say nearly all our midfielders are "jack of all trades".Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 3:06 pmBut as another poster said which I agree with is that his best position is in front of back 4 as a holding midfielder breaking up play, so why would you position him somewhere else on the field where he’s less effective? I don't expect him to get goals and assists doing that role.
We don't need an upgrade on Brownhill, we need a man in the centre next to him who can go forward and let Brownhill do his defensive duties. People think he's poor due to the lack of goals and assists but for us that's not his game. I have said before we need to start targeting specialists. Personally I think with a creative midfielder ala Defour next to him, we would see Brownhill looking even better.
I must admit sometimes I think that all our midfielders would suit a 3 better than a 2.
I fully believe we have got to where we are by the hard work and all round performance of our players (along with the manager) but if we are to sustain or improve in this league then it's vital we start getting specialists in, what I mean by that, as an example, is a Creative midfielder partnered with a defensive midfielder (which Brownhill MIGHT be) rather than having two midfielders doing a similar job. Untill Brownhill has the right partner I can't say he's not up to it, you could also argue that I also can't prove he IS up to it by the same token but I'm not writing him off yet.

Good players shouldn’t need accommodating but maybe complimenting, I’m not sure we should be building the team around him, I’d experiment with him in a few different positions & see how he gets on, but like I say you can’t force something if it’s not there to begin with, he was part of the wells move so if it comes down to moving him on at some point & possibly upgrading it’s not end of the world, he’s more than capable of doing a job in the championship for somebody & you would easily get your return back.Conroy92 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 3:51 pmI actually agree with you, I think he may be more suited for us as a defensive midfielder, his interception stats particularly were very good.
