Anyone know what happened to our links with Jason Knight? It's gone very cold. Maybe his agent was the one that sent Pace off the deep...?

Not sure how true the rumour is but was told the club pulled out of signing him due to him not making Lurker's weird amazon wish listWiscoClaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 4:00 amAnyone know what happened to our links with Jason Knight? I wondered this. I watched him play a few times for Derby after the links and he was completely anonymous. Ran around a lot, that’s all I could say about him. Certainly didn’t look like a player ready to make an impact on our team - one for the future.WiscoClaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 4:00 amAnyone know what happened to our links with Jason Knight? I still think there is a good player there. Just in a shocking team that looks destined for relegation this season.NewClaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 8:41 amI wondered this. What was interesting is that the media suggested a lot of clubs are interested in him, yet none seemed to bid in January or so far. With Derby’s financial woes you’d expect him to be cheap enough for a prem club to buy quite easily if they wanted him.
We had very serious intent re YoungSpike wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 10:00 amVery sceptical of any link that includes us and Watford!
Look like just agents trying to get better deal for player.
The Young rumour looks just like that. Suits us and him .Shows we are active and let’s other think they have competition. We probably had no serious intent
All over now Tony?
Obviously not serious enough!
in the last 5 years, Brighton have the 11th highest net spend in the whole of Europe. Only Arsenal, Chelsea, AC Milan, Aston Villa, Everton, Inter, PSG, Barcelona, Man United and Man City have spent more than them.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 3:46 pmThey’ve spent big have Brighton and they are doing their best to hang on to players. They’ve turned down a £40m offer today from Arsenal for Ben White.
Is it not down to finances? Have they offered a big packageClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 1:22 pmVery serious but not much you can do when a club with whom he has an emotional attachment comes in.

That’s what I would assume.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 2:12 pmSpendmore Villa have probably blown us out of the water
We can arguably only realistically beat Norwich and Brentford in terms of package to players.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 1:49 pmIs it not down to finances? Have they offered a big package
Love the dig at City and Peps obsession with buying fullbacksVegas Claret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 1:24 pmin the last 5 years, Brighton have the 11th highest net spend in the whole of Europe. They've spent approximately 90 million more than Bayern Munich, 130 million more than Liverpool and 170 million more than Real Madrid

How is Young a mercenary ?Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 4:51 pmIf Happy Jack leaves Villa imo they will struggle to finish higher than 16th
He is vital to the way they play and a 36 hour old isnt going to be capable of replacing Villas star
I am happy he chose Villa we didnt need another mercenary, only players wanting to play for us., I am of the opinion that Young and his agent used our reported interest to get more money out of the move
Fair play to him but after all that's the agents job
Hi Woodley, I agree, 36 hours is not a long time to learn to do much, certainly nowhere long enough to learn to play football at any level, never mind at Premier League level.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 4:51 pmIf Happy Jack leaves Villa imo they will struggle to finish higher than 16th

We do it a different way, which is itself something to be proud of. There’s no point concerning ourselves with teams that are willing to spend because they’re backed by wealthy owners, prepared to operate at a loss or one of the ‘big boys’.superdimitri wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 4:18 pmNot sure on the substance of the Young transfer story but having more teams like Aston Villa and Leeds splashing cash about just makes it so much worse for us.
Anyone we're linked with they can just usurp our offer and unlike the big cash cows they'll be in for similar players as we will.
I hope it backfires and these clubs get relegated. As if it isn't enough already the money the top six pump imo their teams to give them an unfair advantage over us but now it's also rich owned promoted teams.
I agree wholeheartedly but my point still stands. Its more difficult now than it used to be because we have the likes of Aston Villa and Leeds (and Wolves even) throwing money around now. Its just more teams we can't compete with for transfers. It doesn't really effect us if we sign different players, but if the story is true and Villa have poached the signing away from us, that's not good.DCWat wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 6:31 pmWe do it a different way, which is itself something to be proud of. Not having swathes of cash to throw at players makes our achievements all the more special. Let’s not kid ourselves though, if we got ourselves some wealthy backers (who knows what Pace’s exit strategy is) there’d be plenty all too happy to see us spending just as easily as everyone else.
Losing out on Young may be financial. It may equally Kay be the pull of resigning for Villa. He’d have been a good signing, in my eyes, but it’s not to be.
We just have to work cleverer - it doesn’t mean we can’t compete at this level, we’ve shown that we can.
The premier league is getting harder and harder each season. As you say, there are only really 4 other teams that we can remotely compete with. If the some of the sleeping giants get promoted it becomes even harder.superdimitri wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 6:45 pmI agree wholeheartedly but my point still stands. You just hope the club has some alternatives lined up so we have the squad depth at the start of the season.
It's the premier league, there will always be teams spending money on players.superdimitri wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 6:45 pmI agree wholeheartedly but my point still stands. There will always be players in the Championship capable of improving PL sides, we cannot afford to sign 4 below average players like Lurker suggested, it will bite us on the arse further down the line. Brooks, Olise, Armstrong, Chair, Ayew are a few off the top of my head, Ayew is now a free transfer I think.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 11:09 pmWho would you go for within our realistic range?
I can’t really see many players in the championship improving us. Maybe a couple at Bournemouth and reading but not much else.
I agree. And I’d have certainly taken him given his versatility and our lack of squad depth.
Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 7:10 pmDodged a bullet or maybe a missile, I’d say it’s sensible to at least wait & see how he gets on at Villa first.
(quote)
You won’t see him featuring at Villa much unless Grealish goes off and they need someone else on the field to dive for free kicks and penalties
We can look all we want but 99% of the time players of his calibre are well out of our reach the only reason this was a runner was because of the age & the risk attached with that.NewClaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 7:37 pmI agree. That said, not if the plan was for him to be a first choice winger & given his age may’ve turned out to be an expensive drain on scarce resources. We’ll only know when we see how he plays for Villa.
The positive to take from this is that we were in for him, and by all accounts was impressed/keen to join but Villa pipped us with a late bid. That’s positive both in that we are active, are looking at players of his calibre and clearly have an positive story to tell.
Agree entirely, and I take the positive of course, but the negative (and i'm afraid there is one) is that this can happen with every single player we talk to. There is always someone ready to nip in, offer more and seal the deal leaving us dead in the water. We will probably never be the preferred option for PL quality players to come to.NewClaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 7:37 pmI agree. Yes but 4 of them 5 players are not in a our price range. I mentioned it on another thread we used to be able to sign the top championship talent for 15m. You will be lucky to get Olise or Armstrong for less that 25m nowKRBFC wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 7:23 pmThere will always be players in the Championship capable of improving PL sides, we cannot afford to sign 4 below average players like Lurker suggested, it will bite us on the arse further down the line. Agreed, but we know that. It’s always been the case and probably always will. My perspective is that in previous seasons we mightn’t even tried (hence the positive).bobinho wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 7:58 pmAgree entirely, and I take the positive of course, but the negative (and i'm afraid there is one) is that this can happen with every single player we talk to. Oh, missed that. Bloody hell, very good signing then. Think he’ll do the business for them - a younger, quicker Vardy.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 8:18 pmLooking like it yes. According to Fabrizio deal agreed and set to be announced early next week.
