Turning point this season?
Last season, for me, it was Pope’s penalty save v Leicester.
What was it this season?

This....along with the closure of the transfer window. Everyone just had to concentrate on the job in hand.

Re: Turning point this season?
Tarks missed the first two matches which we lost, conceding 5 goals and scoring 2. He has played in all our other games, however, it was when Ben Mee came back into the reckoning that we started to pick up.
His first game was away at Brighton in the 7th game of the season and we had just 1 point from 6 matches. He has missed just one game since, against Fulham at home which we drew. In the 7 games in which he has been absent we have won o drawn 2 and lost 5 scored 4 conceded 13.
He has played in 28 games winning 10 drawing 7 and losing 11 scoring 29 conceding 34 ---I think that those figures speak fro themselves and I am definitely with Vegas in this. Ten of our 11 clean sheets have been achieved with Ben in the team.

Chris Wood outmuscling Tyrone Mings to win us a corner v Villa. Changed the flow of the game.

Villa at home.
Ben coming back steadied the ship, but that comeback against Villa really set us up for the rest of the season.
It's easy to forget in time, the 13 games in 39 days, but the weary legs at the end of that spell definitely cost us points, and if we had those lost points we could be top half of the table.
A phenomenal season considering 2pts from 21, and where we were at Christmas.

Two huge turning points for me. 1. Mee returning after the first 6 games
2. Vydra forcing his way into the team because basically SD had no choice.

Def Mee and Vydra. Perhaps not a turning point as such, but both full backs attacking prowess has been superb at times.

All of the above are fair shouts
And Shaka's comic assist which resulted in Woody rediscovering where the back of the net was in a game where Arsenal should have been out-of-sight in the first half.

Hammering Palace away without Wood was a big confidence boost for the team , beating a full strength Villa from a losing position as well.

When we started to find the back of the net.
Up until the end of February only bottom club Sheffield Utd had scored fewer goals than us.
Since the beginning of March we have scored in every game (9 fixtures) albeit that we have not always won the game.

Ben Mee is the obvious one, but if we’re looking at a specific moment....
All three players involved heavily in both the incident and the proceeding winning moment....

Playing the bib collectors in the cup against Bournemouth. I dread to think what might have happened if he'd played a strong team.

Just out of interest Tony, has your calculation been done for games he made an appearance in?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 6:21 pmYet the points per game with Vydra is worse than the points per game without him.
If it has , is there any way you could do one for games he started to see if it makes any difference?

Re: Turning point this season?
Some good shouts mentioned so far.
For me keeping Tarks when he was rumoured to want away, Ben returning definitely, Zaha being absent for Palace when they visited, and the game that signalled to me that we'd be fine was our dominant display at home to Wolves, that win dragged us clear of the relegation zone, and I'm pretty sure we've not been in the bottom 3 since.
If you're looking for a specific moment I'd pinpoint Origi hitting the crossbar for Liverpool when he should have scored, and if that had gone in we probably wouldn't have gone on to achieve a famous win at Anfield which propelled us well clear of Fulham, and we've not really looked back since.

Re: Turning point this season?
Second post nailed it.
2 points after 7 games. Those in the media who didn't know our injury situation had us chalked down for relegation.
We'd be comfortably mid table and closer to Europe than relegation if we'd not had those injuries in the opening games.

I think that he has started 14 PL games this season and we have picked up 13 points in those games.

Re: Turning point this season?
Games he’s started. 13 points from 14 when he’s started, 26 points from 21 when he hasn’t. It’s not meant as a criticism of him at all but to suggest bringing him in has been a turning point is just not right.

Of course and the breakdown shows the reality from a points perspective . It’s not the first time perception wields it’s powerful influence . Some might want a more comprehensive breakdown to accept he wasn’t a turning point but I’m satisfied .
I’d love him to be first choice for a full season and I’ve not always thought that

Re: Turning point this season?
I would like to think there was a turning point but I’m struggling to find a significant one . The nearest I can get is beating Liverpool at Anfield and Wood returning from injury at just the right time.
Of course the importance of the defenders highlighted cannot be underestimated but turning points don’t usually come at such an early stage of the season

Re: Turning point this season?
TBF as I recall it most of the pundits still said we'd survive with ease, and credit to them they were proved correct.
It's impossible to state with any certainty how many points we'd have garnered with a full strength side available for those particular games, but it's probable it would have been a lot more than 2.

A turning point implies a change of direction or outcome. Don’t think there’s been one this season, it’s always looked like we’d be bottom half without going down.

As others have said there hasn't been a turning point as we have still put in very poor performances after putting in very good ones in.
The most inconsistent season I've ever seen of us I think.

Arsenal was certainly the result that gave me confidence that we’d stay up, and the result that I cheered the most, Liverpool a very close second.
Villa and Everton were my two favourite games. The Villa message board after our comeback was priceless.
