Death of King George VI .I was at Rosehill junior School at the time .We all got sent home and I remember my mum coming to collect me .we lived on Romney avenue .I remember the coronation too..the bunting on some streets in Burnley was amazing..I particularly remember Anne street ..a very poor area but they didn't stint on the decor .

Looking through a list of historical events from when I was 4/5 I would say the assassination attempt on Reagan would be the first.

Botham's Ashes and Charles and Diana's wedding later in the year. Don't remember the wedding but street party.

The closer to home disaster I remember is Aberfan.
Aberfan for me too, have a feeling we may share a birth year.

I remember Queen's visit to Burnley post coronation (1955?) - standing in crowds waving flag etc.
In terms of the wider world, Cuban Missile crises was very impactful (as were the, now laughable, public info films advising you to hide behind sandbags under the stairs etc).

Another for JFK.
And, like most, I can remember exactly where I was when I got told about it.

The Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Remember walking from our house on Williams Rd to Burnley General Hospital with my mum to get a check up when she was expecting my brother and seeing bunting everywhere.

Heysel Stadium tragedy, Jock Stein's death, and the Dennis Taylor-Steve Davis blackball world snooker final.

Away from sporting events the Lockerbie plane crash, and the Piper Alpha disaster.

It's amazing how clear the memories are for so many people about the way they heard the news of JFK's assassination .mine are vivid .It was my 19th birthday .At the time I was working for a bank in Leeds and lived in digs over there .We worked Saturday mornings then and got about 1 in 8 off...and it was my turn. I got back to Burnley after a ball aching Friday tea time bus ride through Halifax and was having tea sat at the table with my mum..she had done my favourite...braised steak .The TV was on and I remember Cliff Michelmore but not entirely sure of the programme ( Tonight ? )...the tele went quiet and we both looked in that direction...there was a revolving world on the screen for quite some time . Then the news came through .My dad phoned from his work at the Burnley Express asking what the reports were saying...he was devastated .

We’ve had our share of killers in Bradford.

The black panther - born in Bradford, The Yorkshire Ripper and more recently, The Crossbow Canibal!

My first recollection would be the Falklands War which probably stood out as I had a family member who was there in the RAF

Looks like we share the same birthday, November 23rd, but you are a year older than me, so you won't have been robbed of a year's pension!
My dad was born June 1955 and is always complaining about his stolen pension year!

As for news events, has to be Diana.

Our gracious Queen Liz - coronation
Sputnik 1 launched
Busby Babes Munich air crash
Burnley FC 1959/60
Yuri - first man in space
Leslie Ann Downey missing
Aberfan disaster
Brian Labone Cup Final

All stick in my memory and there were probably other events that are not jumping out of my grey matter.

I can remember the death/funeral of King George VI in 1952 just, but I can remember much more clearly the Coronation of our present queen in 1953 as well as the Matthews Cup Final.

Stockport 94' can remember the build up at primary school where we made rosettes for the coaches, then virtually all the day from Rosgrove to arriving late (nothing has changed 27years later), the noise and train station being pelted with missiles from Stockport fans above after the game as we waited in a tunnel.

Diane's death happened as we had a sleep over for a friend's birthday.

Not earliest but the Arab Spring was a big occasion

Hapton mining disaster, was sat on the grass on the fennyfold by St John's school when told about it. Also remember being terrified every time a plane flew over Whitegate park during the Cuban missile crisis expecting to be nuked.
Locally Hapton Valley mining disaster...nationally Abervan...Internationally JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald assassinations on Live TV?

Cuban missile crisis for me as well. I remember my Dad listening to the radio whilst shaving and saying, 'O good, there isn't going to be a war' when the Russian ships turned back. I was thinking a war would be quite exciting, like in the films, but I was only seven.

Vaguely, Yuri Gagarin's trip into space in April 1961 (9 years old), but with more clarity was
Churchill's funeral on 30th January 1965. We were about to set off to Liverpool for my sister's
6th birthday when it started in black and white on the TV.

Same here. Remember being awake and hearing she was involved in an accident then not long after hearing she’d died. As a young teen it was a shocking event. I remember standing outside the town hall with friends and all of us had a tear in our eye.

Cuban Missile crisis and pictures of silos in the U.S. being readied for action (stock footage but I didn't know it at the time), I was 6 years old and remember being quite frightened that the whole world was going to be blown up.
