Just like Foreverly Claret, I was at Rosehill Junior School when I heard of the death of King George VI. I lived on Rossendale Avenue at the time and I clearly remember the Coronation of the Queen on our new television especially bought for the occasion. Half the Avenue squeezed into our front room and I had to sit in the fireplace because of the crush.

I think mine was Live Aid, I would've only have just turned 3, I remember which seat in the front room I was sitting in and the only memory I have of it was of Freddie Mercury singing Radio GaGa.

I can remember watching a moon landing but wouldn't have been Apollo 11 as i was born in 1968. Power cuts and sitting in the lounge by candlelight which i guess would have been linked to the 3 day week in 73/74?

Your memory hasn't failed you Gg, although it was Carlsen. Christmas time 1952, and the story went on for several days.Guitargeorge wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 1:52 pmThe Flying Enterprise sinking in the Channel, 1950’s. Captain Carlson, If memory serves me correctly, was the master of the vessel.

Sorry to hear about your father, Hipper. And JFK, my earliest news memory, means nothing to me, either, apart from the fact it spawned the best ever crime novel: American Tabloid.Hipper wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 2:31 pm1960, 12th August: My dad and four others dying in an RAF plane crash - made the national papers and was pretty fundamental for me and of course is still with me today.
1962, 5th May Burnley losing in the Cup Final - perhaps not a major news event nationally but it was for me and that also is still with me today.
1963, 22nd November: JFK. According to Wiki this occurred at 1230pm 'Central Standard Time' on a Friday in Dallas. I remember hearing about this at the cubs in the evening about 1900. Central Standard Time seems to be about five hours behind GMT so that would be about right. Anyway, it means almost nothing to me now.

Me too Steve, we were sent home from school & I had to go to my Gran's because my parents were at work. When I got there she was watching it on TV in the parlour(front room), she never used the parlour during the day, it was in black & white which made the images of the disaster all the more stark.
Strangely, me & some friends were discussing this precise subject a fortnight ago.

I vaguely remember Princess Anne's wedding on tv in 1973 but the first world event I saw was the fall of Saigon in 1975.
Re: First major news event you can remember ..
Those football matches in the school yard lasted all day more often than not with different kids joining in or coming and going. Say hello to John for me.Volvoclaret wrote: ↑Sun May 16, 2021 12:10 pmBetter playing in the school yard until Ticker chased us out. Will hopefully arranging to meet up with J. The death of Michael Jackson in 2009 would probably make this list if we posted again in 2031, I suspect !Clarets4me wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 9:48 amThanks for all the responses ... there really do seem to be a number of " where were you when you heard " events that are in the collective memory, depending on age ...
