What Would Have Happened

Post by Siddo » Thu May 13, 2021 12:50 pm

When Arrizabalaga saved Jorginho's back pass last night during Chelsea v Arsenal, what would the penalty have been for handling a back pass, but also stopping a certain goal if Smith-Rowe hadn't scored?

I can't remember this happening before?

Indirect free kick on the 6 yard line, no cards.

Didn't this happen in our semi final v Tottenham in 2009 at Turf? First 10 mins Tottenham player played it back from like 25 yards but the wind caught it and keeper had to tip it over, sure I remember Coyle having a go at 4th official for it not being given as a back pass.

I don't know what the rules are on this point but it's a good question.

If an outfield player in the penalty area had handled the ball to prevent a goal he would be red carded and the result would be a penalty. A goalkeeper is an outfield player with special allowances in the penalty area, the most obvious being that he can handle the ball in most circumstances. It seems reasonable to assume therefore that when he isn't allowed to handle the ball, such as from a backpass, he can only act as an outfield player. Therefore from this backpass, if he handles the ball to prevent a goal he should also be red carded and concede a penalty.

Doesn't qualify as a red card incident. It's an indirect free kick on the 6 yard line, and no card for the goalkeeper.

That's spot on and that would have been the decision with referees like Jones who blow immediately. Marriner gave himself time and so was able to give Arsenal the chance to score.

Marriner showed his experience and played a good advantage -----you could say he used common sense ----do you remember what that is? :)
