Goalkeepers who can play
What’s the point if they can’t keep. Yet again another example of a keeper who can apparently play being unable to save in the United nets.

Re: Goalkeepers who can play
If it stops big clubs wanting Pope, I'm happy for it to be their priority.

Re: Goalkeepers who can play
I’d like to see the clean sheets for Pope, Pickford and Henderson. Then handicap them by the number of caps they have in their back 4.
We have 3, all Tarkowski.
Henderson appears to concede every game.

Goalkeepers are goalkeepers for a reason they can't play football

Can’t think of another top international team with a keeper that kicks as poorly as Pope. The friendlies showed his worst and he didn’t get chance to show his best.
I wouldn’t pick Pope for England.

If NP has any injury issues I think he should make himself unavailable forb the Euros.
It's not as if he's going to get in ahead of Pickford.

Re: Goalkeepers who can play
Henderson has hardly helped his cause tonight especially with Gareth Southgate watching on.
Talking of keepers who can't kick what on earth has happened to Allison's distribution these days he's been woeful for months now.

Re: Goalkeepers who can play
If Pope starts for England then all it shows is how crap the other options are. Like all top teams, England need a keeper who can kick and save. At the moment we have a keeper who can save but can’t kick, and a keeper who can kick but can’t save

His father drowned and died quite recently, I was surprised he barely took any time off.
Re: Goalkeepers who can play
I assume you're joking, how should he have done better with that fourth?
One of the best goalscorers in Europe running 1 on 1 on his favoured left foot, Henderson never stood a chance.
Re: Goalkeepers who can play
He could have tried standing in the middle of the goal rather than in front of his left hand post.

He could have given him less than half the goal to tuck the ball away in for a start. His angles were all over the place

Re: Goalkeepers who can play
He should have advanced futher than he did to try to narrow the target area, he didn't and this made it a little easier for Salah. I still don't think that he would have stopped it, however, he could have done a little bit better than he did.

Re: Goalkeepers who can play
If the medical professionals think that he needs to rest his shoulder then he’ll be declared unfit to play. If he’s fit to play he should do what’s best for his career which is to represent his country and potentially win a major international tournament.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 10:09 pmTraining with England has done Nick Pope very little good.
If his shoulder problem is possibly an ongoing issue he'd do well to rest it.
And I suspect Pope doesn’t feel that training with England has done him very little good.

You're reaching, is this the anti England goalkeeper thing again? bash all English keepers apart from Pope?Claret Till I Die wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 10:23 pmHe could have given him less than half the goal to tuck the ball away in for a start. His angles were all over the place

Agree, one of the very few positives of players being selected for the national squads in my opinion is the chance to spend time with other coaches and players.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 10:32 pmIf the medical professionals think that he needs to rest his shoulder then he’ll be declared unfit to play. Re: Goalkeepers who can play
That would be insane. People used to say same about Heaton. ‘Pointless going. He won’t play’. Luckily he eventually got called up. Played and was part of some major squads. You can’t buy that experience. As a pro or as a person.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 9:55 pmIf NP has any injury issues I think he should make himself unavailable forb the Euros.

Luckily players are driven winners. And will believe in themselves. Equally even if Pickford does start (and he’s never let England down so why shouldn’t he). Pope would still like the opportunity to be part of the squad. And maybe get a chance if something does happen to Pickford. Injury. Red card. Lost form

Re: Goalkeepers who can play
Yes I'm aware of his sad family situation, but if he's saying he's ready to play then he has to perform, and it's not like Adrian isn't an experienced stopper, so yes Allison could have taken extra time off if he needed it, TBF it might help him if the Liverpool defenders stopped playing hospital passes to him in the first place, but this goes back to the playing out from the back philosophy at all times, yes there are times when it can be effective, but sometimes you just have to get rid or play the % ball.

Yes, you are probably absolutely correct. But we all know Pickford will play every minute of the tournament if he doesn't get injured.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 10:41 pmThat would be insane. Re: Goalkeepers who can play
I said on a Pope thread a week or so ago that no club bigger than us at the minute would want him as number 1. However, after watching Henderson tonight, wow, Pope would walk into those United nets. Henderson is shocking.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 9:29 pmWhat’s the point if they can’t keep. Re: Goalkeepers who can play
For all the chat, there's actually only one goalkeeper who is outstanding AND can play out - and that's Ederson at Man City.
And for all the other keepers who supposedly can 'play out from the back', they often don't land their passes and are nowhere near as good as what others make out. They might look less awkward when they kick the ball with a better technique.....but it still ends up not going to who it was intended (or sometimes in the stand).
Give me a goalkeeper who makes saves and commands their box every single time.

Re: Goalkeepers who can play
If I put my neutral hat on, Pickford will get the vote. He has never let Southgate down, just like Joe Hart did not for the first 90% of his England starts. Pickford's distribution, just like Schmeikel, Edison and a number of other keepers in the PL is superb. They can ping a 60-70 yard pass to a player with ease. Where Pope scores is his command of his area, reflexes, and shot stopping. He is also very quick off the mark, almost playing sweeper

These top managers aren’t stupid, the stats for possession obviously work in their favour, it just means now and again it’s the keeper or defenders with egg on their face

Re: Goalkeepers who can play
Could have come out a bit as well to narrow the angle. He seem to just watch Salah run from the half way line and not move.
The ball hit the back of the net near enough in the centre.
