Ivan Toney speculation
Personally I think he would be a good signing for us.
Seems like this story is gathering momentum this afternoon - what does everyone else think?

I think clubs with deeper pockets will get him.

Would cost way too much now, wouldn't make sense.

Suppose it depends if he wants to start for a mid/lower end table team or sit on a bench at a bigger club.

Probably too pricey now but he’d be a perfect striker for us. As similar player as Wood as I have seen in the championship for a while. A natural goalscorer/poacher.

I don’t think he’s got the abilities to step into the higher league.
Don’t rate him at all.

Remember watching him against us in the cup game, he looked very raw then. I'm pretty shocked at how much he's improved this season though.

Looking at his stats, he's already played over 300 games which is some going for a player just turned 25

Re: Ivan Toney speculation
The only clubs I can see Toney linked to are, Arsenal, Chelsea, Palace & Spurs who funnily enough are all based in London, so there's absolutely no chance of him even considering a move north, even if we could afford him which we can't.
I don't know how much Brentford will demand for him, but given Watkins went for around £30m they'll no doubt be looking for something similar for Toney.

He’d be a top squad player. Not sure we will lay out the necessaries on a squad player.

If we can’t afford £20m on a new player it’s time to accept that relegation is a when not if. It’s there going rate for decent players. Any less and it’s a decent championship player.

He'd replace Barnes and provide top competition for Wood.
He's similar to Austin in regards to scoring everywhere he goes.

Re: Ivan Toney speculation
Not necessarily. Brownhill cost £8m and he's more than proved he's a good PL player. To land the likes of Toney would be out of our price range though, I'm pretty sure of that. As SD said, it's difficult to find the right player for the right price.
Re: Ivan Toney speculation
I believe most realistic fans have always felt it's a matter of when not if. There are countless examples that you don't have to pay £20m or more to sign players who have proven good enough for the premier league.

Agree about Wood/Vydra but JayRod and Barnes are both pushing 32; its hard to see them becoming more prolific than they have been thus far, and they will both need replacing sooner rather than laterhuw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 6:03 pmNo, I‘d like him but hope we start with Wood/Vydra next season. We do need more goals though. Hopefully JRod and Ash Barnes can chip in with a few more next term.

Re: Ivan Toney speculation
Why won't it happen at £20 million?
Its the next step up from what we paid for Wood, after what we paid for Brady and Defour before him.
Transfer record would be broken at some point.

Not sure where people have got the 20m figure from. All the figures mentioned in the media are closer to the 30m-35m figure.

Re: Ivan Toney speculation
Barnes & Rodriguez lack the pace to play in the PL next year. This is why Vydra is having an impact as he is quick from a standing start, and gets into great positions. Dyche once said you cannot have enough strikers. They win you points as Wood has proved in the last 6-8 games. Sadly other than Westwood we don't seem to get goals from our central midfielders Cant see Barnes and Jay getting huge game time-Jay has been one of the most disappointing of the squad this year-number of niggly injuries and missed a number of point winning sitters. I think Barnes has now had one too many injuries, and unless he comes out of the blocks flying following a good pre-season, his starts will be limited. Yes we do need a good strikerrandomclaret2 wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 6:12 pmAgree about Wood/Vydra but JayRod and Barnes are both pushing 32; its hard to see them becoming more prolific than they have been thus far, and they will both need replacing sooner rather than later

I think Jay has suffered with his injuries but does occasionally show flashes of what he can do. Barnes has been great for us, but we really need to look to improve on him now and... of the tactics employed that suited him

4 games.. The rest out on loan where he had an average 1 in 2 goal ratio.

Re: Ivan Toney speculation
Get your point about their ages but both have been incredibly unlucky with injuries this covid season. I wouldn’t be canning either just yet. This also gives Mumbongo, Richardson and Thompson another year to see where that takes them. With Mumbongo getting a new contract somebody has seen progress in him.randomclaret2 wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 6:12 pmAgree about Wood/Vydra but JayRod and Barnes are both pushing 32; its hard to see them becoming more prolific than they have been thus far, and they will both need replacing sooner rather than later
Re: Ivan Toney speculation
What has he done, so far, to warrant a “more than proved he’s a good PL player” assessment? I’m not saying he can’t be but I’m still to be convinced.Goodclaret wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 6:04 pmNot necessarily. Brownhill cost £8m and he's more than proved he's a good PL player. I’m often left thinking that he reminds of of an over exuberant youngster, chasing everything to the detriment of his all round game.
When I look back to when we first had Cork, the difference between him and Brownhill is night an day. Cork was at that stage already a far more intelligent footballer than I’ve seen so far from Brownhill.
There’s a player in there, I think, but I’m yet to be convinced he’s a good Premier League player.

Re: Ivan Toney speculation
There is definitely a PL player in him. Needs polishing up a bit but his stat as top for interceptions in the PL is a massive plus in our midfield. He has been messed about re position also but gives his all every game.

I think he’s got quite a way to go, but as you rightly point out, some of his stats do make impressive reading.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 7:43 pmThere is definitely a PL player in him. He has been moved about a bit but I think it’s fair to say that we look a better side with Cork and Westwood as a pairing than one or the other with Brownhill.
He really needs to be making one of the central positions his own and so far, I don’t think he’s anywhere near to doing that. That must be his aim next season.

Wouldn’t argue with any of that but difficult to displace Cork & Westwood. I wouldn’t complain if he was our first mf back up and we sign a proper right sider to back up, or replace, JBG.DCWat wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 7:55 pmI think he’s got quite a way to go, but as you rightly point out, some of his stats do make impressive reading.

I'm assuming this Ivan lad's surname is 'speculation' as there is nowt linking him with us
Re: Ivan Toney speculation
Ideally, I’d be looking to bring in a central midfielder who is pretty much a guaranteed starter, giving us four decent midfield options.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 8:06 pmWouldn’t argue with any of that but difficult to displace Cork & Westwood. Though someone on the right is perhaps the highest requirement as things currently stand.

Benrahma has not exactly torn up the Prem. I doubt Toney would either. Bench player for us, I think, like you say. No thanks.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 5:45 pmHe’d be a top squad player. Not sure we will lay out the necessaries on a squad player.
We need to spend £20m on a RW to balance the team.

Re: Ivan Toney speculation
Preferably, you find players like Toney before he goes to a Brentford and multiplies his value by 1000%. They've done brilliantly finding gems and moving them on, our financial status means we need to be doing the same. Harder to blood potential in the Premier league of course so not easy, but we're basically paying a premium for Brentfords superior scouting and recruitment.
Re: Ivan Toney speculation
I think Benrahma is quality. Him and Antonio were excellent when they beat us at their place.

He definitely was against us but the general concecus amongst the Hammers fans (judging by the message board when I’ve read it) is that he’s flattered to deceive.
Antonio is a different story.
Re: Ivan Toney speculation
We were said to be interested when he was at Posh..he scored against us in the cup at Turf Moor. 3 million then. Thirty now. Would have been a good signing. Added value.

You only have to look at the money the relegated clubs spent. I rate toney but he's probably valued too highly for us now. If we went into next season with wood and vydra up top playing as they are now I'd be happy.

More chance of ClaretTony starting for us next season than Ivan.
Priority isn’t a striker anyway, priority positions are a starting right winger (this is a must), starting Centre half (if Tark goes) otherwise another back up CB.
Then we could look improving the quality in the middle of midfield and right back.

I’d agree with that although improving the quality in midfield could just as easily be applied to the attack.RVclaret wrote: ↑Sat May 15, 2021 7:10 amMore chance of ClaretTony starting for us next season than Ivan.

Barnes and perhaps even Rodriguez could quite easily be looked at as being ready to upgrade on.
