Will Hendrick regret his move to the Geordies

Post by tiger76 » Fri May 14, 2021 8:28 pm

After a promising start to his Newcastle career, Jeff has warmed the bench a lot this season, and once again tonight he's warming the bench.

At least when he was at Burnley when he was available he was usually selected, I get he's probably earning more money at Newcastle, but his career seems to be stalling or even going backwards at a rate of knots.

Does anybody think he's regretting his move north given the way the season has panned out for him and Newcastle, and there's every chance that we'll finish above Newcastle come next week, so it's not like he's struggling to get into a successful side either, they've been treading water a lot this campaign, and despite that he still can't force himself into Steve Bruce's plans.

Hendrick could well join the long list of ex-Clarets who thought the grass was greener on the other side, only to have a rude awakening and discover this wasn't the case at all.

I’m sure he’s not regretting his pay rise.

I think a lot of our players would miss our dressing room when they leave.

Hendrick was offered a pay cut here, wasn't he?

Wasn't it thought at the time his preference was to stay?

At the end of his Newcastle contract Jeff Hendrick will have made almost 30 million quid as a professional footballer. It will remain one of life’s mysteries.

Fair dos if he likes earning more and playing less.

He’d have been handy for us this season, thought he was important for us and I wanted him to stay. I wish him well but now we’ve stayed up I’m glad he’s moved on.

We should be delighted we got shut off him

He should be delighted to have earned another premier league contract.

I predicted when he left he would be a bench warmer by xmas and he is. I also predicted he will be in the championship within two seasons. I think he will be

He actually did well as part of the "group", but with a totally different "group" he can easily be exposed for what he is....extremely average!!! (and JUST ABOUT a PL player.

Very similar player to Brownhill. Hendrick was handy for a couple of goals a season and we have missed that this season.

Both players will/would struggle at any other premier league club.

Jeff will be over the moon with his move. Only because his bank balance is filling up. The most frustrating thing is that there is a really good player in there. The only time we saw that was when it suited Jeff. He was that detached from the fans I suspect he’s barely noticed his shirt has changed colour. The hardest part of the move would have been learning the route to the new training ground! He’ll put a few good weeks in when it’s time for contract negotiations.

He was absolutely gash for us most of the time. Definitely had potential as he showed from time to time as he was athletic and not bad technically.

I believe brownhill is a better player but has been poor recently. Brownhill at centre midfield at least has had a big effect with huge numbers of interceptions. Hendrick never did anything in terms of stats.

Apart from goals? Hendrick was a handy player for Burnley.

Neither are particularly great but will do a job.

A complete nonsense.

You don't get moved about in a Dyche team if you're absolutely gash most of the time.

Three or four different positions he played in for us, and although he wasn't anything absolutely special, before Dwight he was the only player we had who could beat a man.

I don't know why he would regret it.

Big pay rise and decent contract length.

I don't think there was many Burnley fans who expected Jeff to be a regular at Newcastle to be honest.

Jeff made 34 appearances in the season Burnley finished seventh.

In terms of stats he scored 10 goals in total.

One of the first on the team sheet week on week out would suggest that he wasn’t. Followed his instructions to the letter and worked hard. If that’s gash, then I’d take another few.

Well to be fair he was important and did a good job on the wing.

Got to think the potential he had which he showed so little is astounding. He could beat a man, but did it about 5 times a season. Also - he played on the wing for at least a season and how many balls would he have put into the box? I fear brownhill, who started well, is going the same way playing out of position.

Hendrick’s value was in his versatility - he’d give a solid hard working performance wherever he was asked to play. He’d have been a really useful squad member to have this season.

What he wasn’t, was a good long term option to a dedicated position, be that on the right, as part of a central two or at the front of a midfield three.

His versatility may have hampered him somewhat, but ultimately he’s not been quite good enough to hold down a any of a variety of positions for more than the short to medium term.

Even with us and a small squad, there was usually someone dedicated to one of his positions that could perform better.

That’s not to discredit what he can and did deliver, he had some good games, but ultimately I think this level is a step too far for him unless he’s prepared to accept more of a utility role and the inevitable time on the bench.

What he’s delivered for them and the reaction to him from the fans at Newcastle can’t be much of a surprise to most Burnley fans.

He played where he was asked to, and I personally didn’t see a performance where he gave less that 100%.

I’ve always rated Jeff. I think he’s a hard worker and was a delight to watch on the ball. However, this article was startling: https://www.themag.co.uk/2020/12/the-je ... le-united/

Here’s a highlight:

Touches of the ball per 90 mins:

Anguissa – 80

Phillips – 79

Shelvey – 61

Rice – 59

Almirón – 49

Longstaff – 47

Hayden – 45

20/21 Hendrick – 41

17/18 Hendrick – 39

19/20 Hendrick – 36

Completed passes per 90 mins:

Anguissa – 57

Phillips – 55

Rice – 43

Shelvey – 37

Hayden – 31

Longstaff – 31

Almirón – 29

20/21 Hendrick – 27

17/18 Hendrick – 24

19/20 Hendrick – 20

Number of carries per 90 mins:

Anguissa – 59

Phillips – 49

Rice – 40

Almirón – 34

Shelvey – 34

17/18 Hendrick – 28

Hayden – 25

Longstaff – 24

19/20 Hendrick – 24

20/21 Hendrick – 24

Tackles per 90 mins:

Anguissa – 3.85

Phillips – 3.29

Almirón – 3.15

Rice – 2.44

Shelvey – 2.25

Hayden – 1.96

Longstaff – 1.68

19/20 Hendrick – 0.84

17/18 Hendrick – 0.46

20/21 Hendrick – 0.36

The numbers tell an interesting story.

Refreshing to see someone who's not afraid to speak the truth. It won't be popular on here but you couldn't be more right.

It was clear he was always being shoehorned into roles that he was never comfortable with and hopefully now it allows us to sign a proper right winger to replace him.

The biggest relief for me has been that I no longer have to worry about him potentially being in our first team plans as a starter. Wouldn't have minded keeping him as a backup option off the bench but with the way he was being picked if he'd stayed he would only have held back us improving the right side in the future.

As a footballer it must be frustrating not to play every week and that’s the only regret he’ll have at the moment but I would imagine the same thing applies to all footballers.

He must be gutted inside as at one stage a move to AC Milan was on the cards for him.

He was the ultimate “confidence” player and if things were going wrong he tended to “hide” in matches but if he was on his game he was influential for us.

I liked Jeff, not a world beater by any means but certainly not a duffer either.

Always worked hard and the goal he scored against Bournemouth at The Turf will always be a thing of beauty.

I think that technically Jeff was a good player but he only seemed to do just enough to keep onside of SD and of course occasionally produced a stunning finish. With Brownhill we have a less talented player but someone who really puts a shift in every time he pulls on the shirt and someone who will develop technically with more game time. I'm just waiting for him to unleash a rocket into the top corner though :(

You’ve really missed the mark. Hendrick was a top footballer for BFC. He should be welcomed back anytime.

Wasnt he found not guilty?
Very good :)

I can't actually remember what happened with that, but I assume he was.

Moving to another club for more money and playing less has happened for years-remember Sanchez of Arsenal. Cannot see why fans are getting so worked up about it. We got relatively good value from Hendrick and he did what our midfielders (other than Westwood ) cannot do, and thats score goals, and I recall he got some vital point earning goals for us, when played out of position. He would have been an ever present this season I suspect

The one thing that's probably hurt him is that he has gone down the pecking order in the Ireland team, but was an automatic starter whenever with us

Perhaps it could be added that he was part of the Irish Gang, presumably with Ward, Brady and Long, that helped in the team spirit department.

Its poor how one player takes all the abuse....i rated Hendrick, but sadly im in a minority on that one,Brownhill is beginning to be the next target
Brownhill's been one of our better performers this season, and more importantly he's showing signs of improving his game, so why he'd be a target for the boo-boys only they can answer.

Personally I would have liked to have kept Hendrick he'd have been an important cog in our machine, but he made his choice and he'll have to live with it now, surprisingly to me we haven't missed him as much as I thought we might, and if his wage demands were as reported then I'm glad he moved on TBH.

Newcastle fans have a long history of not liking people at their club, so hardly a shock.

He played where he was asked to, and I personally didn’t see a performance where he gave less that 100%.
Just watch Sons goal of the season against us at the new stadium.

Our Jeff was running in reverse.

I was never a Jeff hater, I quite liked him. He was a lazy player on the ball though, always took the safe option when he had the ability to drive forward with the ball. Ran around a lot off the ball though and was versatile because of his running.
