The Price of petrol..

.. was 32p per gallon when I worked at Whitegate Garage circa 1970.

only a couple of years earlier it cost 9d for me to get into Turf moor and Uncle George paid the extra 6d to get into the enclosure, I make that 6p in todays money

Now petrol costs in the region of £6 per gallon and a ticket to the match say £30.

Petrol has increased by a multiple of nearly 19 and football over 500

Now I thought petrol had increased at a rapid rate but can anything beat football for inflation? Twix excluded of course

Where Twixes around in 1970? I can recall Mars Crunchy and Milky Ways but I'm not sure I recall them.

In 1970 a new mini cost about £600.
In 1974 a brand new, 3 bed semi detached house in Baxenden, cost about £4,000.
So the average weekly wage was £32. Multiply this by 125 you get £4,000.
Now if the average weekly wage is say £500/week x 125 = £62,500.
Now can you buy a new 3 bed semi fo £62,500???

No you can't but there are a few things cheaper than way back then: my future in-laws paid £350 for a 22" colour tv in 1974.
By your "weekly wage" reckoning that would equate to nigh on £5000 now.
Last year I bought a superb brand new LG 43" smart tv for £230.

My then girlfiend and I flew LHR - Toronto return for £74 each in 1973 - that would have been 2 weks wages' worth. Just before the pandemic we flew LHR - Boston (similar length flight) for £149 - less than a third of your quoted average wage.

But of course, I agree that in general things are hugely more expensive.

As my Dad used to say, "Only the rain comes down; everything else goes up." :D

I noticed over the last few weeks they put diesel up quite a lot. 2 months ago during lockdown we were paying £1:18 for Esso, it then went up on 1 May to £1:23 and at the weekend they put it up again to £1:28.

On the Price of Football podcast (well worth a listen) Kieran Maguire went through Manchester United’s accounts from the 1970s. The top paid player was on £32,000 a year and they made 2 grand from broadcasting in a year!,,

How many couple of years earlier did you get in for 9d? Around 1970 I'm pretty sure it was 5s (60d) for an adult on the terrace. In fact I think that was the standard minimum price.

A twix was 3d about that time - it was first made in the late 1960s. The match day programme was 1s (12d) in 1970.

The published rates of inflation are a nonsence. Inflation in real terms is much closer to 10% a year vs the typically stated 1 to 2% figures.

Did notice the price of fuel has rocketed yesterday. Hasn’t occurred to me until recently.

Anyone cash in this time last year when barrel prices had crashed?
