Is this right - football rules clarification
I understood that if a football match ends with one side having less than 7 players on one team the match was abandoned, but you don't have to start with 11 players?
I'm not sure why you would elect to start with less than 11 but you can as per the legal laws of the game? Is that right?

You must have a minimum of 7 players and no more than 11 players on the pitch. I would think kicking off with less than 11 has happened a few times in local football matches.duncandisorderly wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 10:11 pmI understood that if a football match ends with one side having less than 7 players on one team the match was abandoned, but you don't have to start with 11 players?

I think the rule about starting with less than eleven is more about having to fullfil the fixture or you lose the points,.
I've played in a 9 vs 11. Had we not turned up the home side would have been given the points. As it happened we won!

Google Sheff Utd Vs WBA where Neil Warnocks side didn't have enough men to finish a game. The only one I know of in professional football.
Starting with 10 will never happen in the pro game but happens quite often in local league football

I presume a substitute can only, well, substitute, an existing player. Is there any law of the game by which a team could start with less players than it ends with?
E.g, you start with with 10 for the first half and add another for the second.

We've had players turn up at half-time.

Yeah, but were they subs? Did they replace someone, or just, you know, join in?

Local amateur football if it’s a midweek evening game & people are still at work or finishing work & can’t make the KO time, I’ve known them just play 5 a side to ensure the game happens & even the managers play to make up the shortfall in numbers, late KOs the ref just usually shaves 5/10 mins off each half & the 15 at HT is shortened to ensure the games finish before nightfall.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 10:18 pmGoogle Sheff Utd Vs WBA where Neil Warnocks side didn't have enough men to finish a game. Why would you have a sub on the side line when you're a man down on the pitch?duncandisorderly wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 10:44 pmYeah, but were they subs? Did they replace someone, or just, you know, join in?

Well, quite. Though it adds interesting tactical dilemmas no?Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 10:57 pmWhy would you have a sub on the side line when you're a man down on the pitch?
Imagine Man City so confident in beating Burnley that they only send 10 players.

You put your team in to the referee. If one arrives late or gets caught short you can start with 10 and he can come on when available if he was named in the starting X1.

Re: Is this right - football rules clarification
I was secretary of a league up here in the north east and we had scheduled midweek matches to complete the season. I went to watch a game and one team only had 10 men to start the game because a lad had been delayed at work. They had nobody scheduled as substitute on the team sheet because they knew that nobody else would turn up.
Twenty minutes into the game the missing player turned up, however, the referee would not allow him onto the field because he was not a named substitute! At half time I had a word and explained that the team only had 10 men to start and that the player who turned up was not a substitute, he was the missing member of the team. After the discussion it was agreed that the lad should be allowed to play.
Sadly, just 11 weeks after this game, the referee was shot by Raul Moat and this game turned out to be his last game as an official. Not a good memory as far as I am concerned,

I recall Fulledge Colts under 13s and Michelin under 13s regularly played with 9 men so to speak....the 9th man though being 17years old ringers..they still got Flogged though.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 10:15 pmYou must have a minimum of 7 players and no more than 11 players on the pitch. At Holt House once (Sunday morning stuff) we only had 7 then a few seconds before KO an 8th showed up so we could start. Then after a bit a lad who had been out in Manchester and had driven all the way back showed up so we had 9. 5 minutes later there was a bad tackle and a fight and 2 of ours got sent off so it was abandoned as we only had 7 . Poor lad drove back from Manchester hungover for 5 minutes play
