Self seeding plants/flowers that will take over your garden...

Post by Mala591 » Tue May 18, 2021 2:29 pm

Apart from the usual culprits...

The two ‘devil plants’ which are causing havoc in my garden at the moment are Aquilegia (yes it does have beautiful flowers) and Alchemilla (Lady’s Mantle - small green misleadingly innocuous flowers).

It’s nice to have a few ‘free’ self seeding plants/flowers each year but avoid these two at all costs. If you see them suddenly appear as if by magic (from your neighbours garden) remove them immediately.

Right, rant over, time to get back into my front garden jungle and continue the battle...

I have a problem with Oregano planted by the previous owner 20 years ago, it has a habit of growing under plants, roses etc, that I want to keep so weedkiller is not an option.

yep they are a bit of a nightmare - it is imperative to cut off the seed heads early on Aquilegia early if you want to keep it under any semblance of control

giveusaB will perhaps give you details on my garden when he's online - but until he does, it's small, on a slope, was a rockery and is now full of weeds and junk that has come out of the house during work being done in there. I'd love to get my garden back to looking like a garden.

I think we planted some version of Alyssum in 2018 with some wild flowers. We thought they'd died off at the end of summer. Little buggers are springing up literally everywhere since. Between the cracks in the path, in the pots, if it can grow there it does.
It's a beautiful little white flower but it's gone mad!

Stay off the Lupins too, and if John Cleese comes by demanding
all the Lupins you've got, just hand them over. They're little devils

Have you not tried removing the flower heads before these plants go to seed ... that way you can just have as many or as few as you like

We were warned off putting rhodedendrons in by the new neighbours. It grows wild around here and does take over the moors. Possibly easier to contain in a garden setting.

The 'wild' one is usually a purple colour and can grow very big. The usual ones you can buy in the garden centre should be fine. The real issue is your soil acidity/alkalinity (pH):

Generally they have beautiful flowers for a couple of weeks and are then just a green lump for the rest of the year.

You’ve dropped off too much bread, sir. He’s also got things under his patio. He used to be a big Brookside fan...

I know they won't have been planted by anybody but our front garden and next door's are plagued by mare's tails. Last year we had the garden fully membraned, and laid artificial grass with a pebbled border. As I expected the mare's tails have come poking through, mainly at the edge of the membrane. I'm now resigned to tugging it up as it appears, as I've read all about them and how you can never really eradicate them

Forget-me-nots. Pretty, but they pop up everywhere! A woman was asking garden centre staff if she could buy any as plants - come up to mine love, and dig a few up - save me a job!

Lady's Mantle is an absolute nightmare to get rid off once it's taken hold and not particularly attractive either in my opinion. In the end I dug the lot up but still have to keep a watchful eye that new sproutings don't appear.

Forgot to do this to the Aquilegia last Autumn but I have learnt my lesson the hard way, which is perhaps the best way of learning ☹️

Same as us Mala ... neighbour told us to remove the dying flower/seed heads before they popped and then no more problem (although I have to admit it I quite like them 🙂)
