If it was'nt for the MONEY !

Post by WORSLEY CLARET » Mon May 24, 2021 11:01 am

I personally believe that the majority of our supporters would rather we were enjoying watching open attacking football, where win or at least a battling display was achievable. Unfortunately though this would only be the case in the Championship !
Your thoughts Please.

We finished 7th with a good standard of football...

We just need the next catalyst player like Defour, we have everything else in place.

When I turned out for our 3rd eleven (cricket) I spent much of the afternoon lumping some red-faced yokel over cow corner into a nearby stream...later in the afternoon, on a slow turner I sent a procession of bemused locals trudging back to the pavilion......many of them failing to trouble the scorers.

A reasonable way to enjoy an afternoon in the sun for many...but not for me thanks. I enjoyed playing and watching at the best level I could get to...the rest was a bit demeaning...

Some ive had the misfortune to “chat” with recently are far from delighted. Will “only be happy when we are a top 10 club”

I’d say we played a good standard of football at Everton and Wolves to name but 2 , sometimes it’s down to the oppositions poor performance sometimes it’s how good we are , mostly it’s a combination of both.

We had a dreadful start and a dreadful finish (after safety was confirmed) but were pretty good for the most part in between. I’m very happy we’re still a Premier League club.

I love the Championship for the drama it creates but am happy watching that league as a relative neutral.

They are seriously deluded then, albeit that we have worked the miracle of achieving this twice in the last 4 season. When you consider the following ten clubs and their level of resources/owner wealth :
Liverpool
Chelsea
Man City
Man United
Spurs
Arsenal
Everton
Leicester
Wolves
Villa

and beneath that the likes of West Ham, Leeds and Newcastle , how are we meant to be a consistently top 10 club ? We are total minnows in Premier League terms and the people you mention must have some issue with their brains if they can't see or understand that, Every season in the PL is tremendous as far as I'm concerned but it's getting tougher for even Dyche to keep us there. Such an important summer coming up.

It’s a really difficult one.

I love being in the premier league for everything it brings the club. But I am finding it harder and harder to enjoy watching us play. 90% of games we are second best and result to lumping it forward. It’s effective but really boring.

Let’s hope as DJ said we get a Defour type signing that can result in a better quality of football.

It's a win-win for me.

1) We remain in the Premier League and thats great.

2) We eventually get relegated (which will happen one day) and we get to enjoy different away days and hopefully see us win some games in style on route to promotion.

Then back to point 1.

The whole concept is weird.

The biggest and richest teams striving to achieve Top 4 to qualify for the Champions League or gain a place in the Europa League. Their Managers then spend the following season bleating about too many fixtures and apparently losing interest in Domestic Cups despite the fact the same teams win those Cups consistently over many years. The same squad size is the available for every Club yet all Clubs moan about the size of their squad.

Fans don't accept the status of their own Club within the hierarchy, quoting crowd size or capacity as a measure of status whilst ignoring lack of success on the pitch (Spurs). Then you have the rest of us, struggling to reach the elusive for many 40 point mark and quantify the season as a success if you finish in 17th or above.

Money comes first but tied in with that is the success that same money brings to those that earn the most and so it continues on relentlessly.

I'm sure Bob Hoskins would agree that Sean Dyche knows a bit about attacking football and has plans to tweak his offensive strategy and training over the next few months for top flight survival first and then building upon that.

Some of the football is very good.

If we're talking about players whose offensive strategy is route one Argentinian-style shortest distance to the goal from wherever on the pitch and that's where we're running, like Roman road football, then Glen Little was that kind of player and a crowd favorite for it, like Steve Kindon also.

How that fits into Sean's plan, is a secret.

I get this and so do I but there has to be a recognition that EVERY club is looking to progress and if everyone increases their spending, for instance, by 10% then that means the gap between them and us just gets wider and we fall further behind in relative terms.

I agree with the OP. I’m glad we are in the Prem for the money but, for me, VAR is killing the game. I much prefer watching the Championship refs making mistakes in real time, than some giffer at Shockley Park eviscerating the game in hindsight. Keep goal line technology but bin the rest.

Referee and linesmen and goal-line technology and make it illegal to place real-time bets on football when the ball is not in play.

Come to think of it, no in-play real-time betting on football either.

Not just for carbon footprint reasons but also to eradicate gambling addiction from the match i.e. bets can only be placed on the outcome of the match before kick-off and a broadcast agreement is that such betting rules for the match be observed in all media-receiving countries.

Is there any claret fan that wouldn’t be happy with recent times at the club. Although had we lost that play off final vs Sheff Utd things would of been very different I believe with the financial situation.

We’ve been on an upward spiral since that play off final, even though we went straight back down we were able to go back up and lessons were learnt and survived since. However this season as successful as it is surviving, it did/does feel like we might start struggling going forward.

I wouldn’t sacrifice where we are for being able to see great games and pretty football every week.

Saying that, I would like us to play a nicer brand of football, which i do believe is possible.

What we’ve not had since Defour and Blake before that is a player that gets you off your seat. McNeil is perhaps the nearest but he’s a way off being that player, just yet.

When we started out on the current run of seasons in the Premier League, I hoped to see a gradual improvement on the style of play, season on season. We may have seen that had we been in a position to keep investing in the team, but I think it’s fair to say we’ve been hampered in the respect.

It’s a fine balance though, push it too far and it could send us down.

The thought went through my mind yesterday around 5:45 p.m. if we'd not beaten Sheff Utd in May 2009 it would have been very unlikely we'd have been playing them on the last day of a Premier League season.

Long may our success in the Premier League continue. All the players have "done great." I don't think any of us were envying Sheff Utd Ryan Brewster at £20 million.

I'm quite happy us being premier league, but I'd like to have a couple of weeks in the season when we get to play, say, Bristol rovers and port Vale away instead of another load of primadonnas.

When one looks at the situation many small town clubs are in we are producing something of a miracle.
I don't like the PL for what it is and what it has done for the rest of the league clubs, the financial imbalance, the cheating etc.
But if being in it goes some way to ensuring the club's survival then it's obviously best to be in it.

Well I can kind of see where the OP is coming from, however be careful what you wish for because if we were to drop to the Championship with our debt that been loaded onto the club I would expect an exodus of our best players, so it'd be bye, bye Charlie, Dwight, Vydra & Wood at the very least.

And just because we were playing in the Championship doesn't automatically equate to necessarily seeing better football or even winning more games, it's worth remembering we've had several seasons of struggling in the Championship. and we've even had a few relegation fights to stay in that division/

The perception amongst many of our fans is if we did fall a league we'd bounce straight back, we might but this is a dangerous game to play, yes Norwich and Watford have made an instant return this season, but there's plenty others who haven't been so lucky, Cardiff, Huddersfield & Stoke in particular are just 3 that spring to mind.

And let's say for sake of argument we went down next season which is a definite possibility, and then repeated the success we enjoyed in 2016 and found ourselves back in the PL what then, in our 7 PL seasons we've suffered relegation twice, and finished 15th, 16th & 17th in 3 others, yes we have also achieved a 7th and a 10th placed finish during that time also, but in reality they were unusual seasons and we shouldn't expect to be competing for top 10 finishes very often, our base position while we're in the PL is probably going to be in the bottom 5/6 sides in most campaigns, and some of our more delusional fans need to get their heads around this fact I'm afraid.

this idea that somehow football is preferable below the top flight is laughable. what point is there in excelling below the best division. if grass roots stuff and cold pies on wet wednesday nights is your thing, then by all means follow non league for fantasy purity. I will happily settle for more of the same from Burnley.
It took ******* ages to climb back to this level, and the journey through the dregs of the leagues was not a pretty one.

do you even understand the value of sport? is success so important that the spectacle is meaningless?

you are laughable because you represent everything that has ruined footy. all those that subscribe to sky and then skrike about money; all those that think arbitrary success is more important than competition.

i can imagine a world where football has been removed from football completely. a bit like brian clough's football fortunes.

they can call it pep guardiola's depressing dystopia.

for me it's the spectacle. i don't see the two as necessarily being separate in fact for me when the two marry that is when sport becomes extraspecial.

Short memories on here sometimes. Does no one remember cotterball or the turgid stuff Eddie had us playing? Our football in 2015/16 was also often extremely functional and far lower quality than most of this season but Gray and Barton made the difference.
It’s annoying we tailed off terribly once safety was assured but some of the Wood/Vydra combination play was really exciting and the chance to watch Dwight in a Burnley shirt is pure joy.
Just wait until you’re all back at the Turf amongst 20,000 others screaming your heads off and this Premier League lark won’t seem so bad after all!

Some interesting points.I for one having been at Colchester on a wet Tuesday night, watching us loose, dont hanker for a return to that level.
Give me our place in the Sun.We had 25yrs in the top league till inept mismanagement caused our decline.Things change as Parky said "Nostalgia ain't what it used to be"UTC

If one looks at the History of Football and its true apotheosis then 1970 is about right.

Since then, there's been a lack of faith in the product in actual product i.e actual football.
