BBC Sport Manager of the Season

Post by Devils_Advocate » Mon May 24, 2021 3:54 pm

Marcelo Bielsa has been voted the Premier League manager of the season with David Moyes second and Pep Guardiola in third place.

Id say you could make a case for anyone of them winning it but with Rodgers Leicester just falling short I think these have to be the top three

Honorable mentions also for Dean Smith and Steve Bruce as 11th and 12th are decent positions for their respective clubs

Two seasons to get the Biggest club in Europe out of the Second Division, followed by a Mid Table finish after spending £100m makes you Manager of the Season ?

Rodgers should have won it. They have had horrendous injuries and deserved CL football.
Chelsea seem to have got away without injuries more than most. I wonder if there use of all the squad has helped? They seem to have quality cover for every position except a goalscorer.

Bielsa or Moyes for me, if Pep wins the CL then he nicks it. Tuchel has done really well too.

I agree to an extent but what Bielsa has achieved is remarkable.

He has achieved 59 points this season. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that is better than we have ever reached.

His team is also valued in the bottom 3 at 103m spent in the last 5 years. (For reference Burnley’s is valued bottom 5 at 170m in last 5 seasons).

If Leeds had reached that number of points in any of the last 4 seasons they would be playing European football next season.

He has turned them into a great outfit, they play great football. If he gets more money injected this season, I would say they are likely to get into Europe next season.

Bielsa was in the top 3 last year for Fifa manager of the year, so this is no shock.

This will really set the cat amongst the pigeons, no way Dyche has spent more than Bielsa to assemble a team, b bb bb bbu but you need you spend billions to pass the football.

Without Bielsa there would be no Leeds revival. He has turned the club around to a positive attacking side that entertain, a joy for the media and neutrals alike. To get 59 points in their first season back is quite remarkable. Credit where it's due.

And a proportion of that was for Costa who they were obliged to purchase.

Maybe we should wait until he keeps them in the prem for 6 seasons and in Europe before we set any cats amongst the pigeons...this time last year Chris Wilder was a genius.

Should help for context as to how good our manager is having spent circa 1 per cent of Bielsa last summer

Dunno, I’d say for a promoted team to finish just 6 points behind West Ham is more of an achievement than West Ham finishing 6th.

Leeds wont have the same issue, they're too good to go down atm, like Wolves. Smart spending, excellent manager, clearly a great recruitment team in place. We have 1 of those 3 ingredients.

Where did we form a judgement? But now you mention it because the last five years doesn't compare like with like.

I mean you were quick to jump on the ''They have spent £100M in the last window'' as some form of disregard for the job Bielsa has done, every club in the PL has spent money, including ourselves, just spread out over a longer period of time. We receive £130M a year for remaining in the league, we chose to stockpile cash in reserve instead of spending it on players.

Hard to argue against Bielsa to be honest.

He’d seem an ideal fit for Spurs to me, not sure why they are not in for him.

Bielsa and Moyes are both very worthy. Be interesting to see if Leeds can maintain this form next year. I think also Steve Bruce deserves some recognition-he came under huge pressure to get sacked, ended up 12th with 45 points. Roy Hodgson too with a poor and ageing squad for finishing 14th and safely avoiding relegation

Bielsa has done well, but Is it only me who finds it bizarre that he wins Manager of the Season when finishing 9th, well SD lead us to 7th in 17/18 and a place in Europe yet he still couldn't win this award.

I'd have given it to Moyes personally he's at least achieved something, or even rodgers though yesterday's late collapse probably cost him in the end.

However if Pep should win the CL to go along with the PL and the LC it will be strange for him not to be recognised even given the vast resources City have at their disposal.

Surely, the manager of the season award has to go to the darling of the Sky Soccer Saturday mob Gareth (What he's done at Wycombe Wanderers on their budget is remarkable) Ainsworth.

Leicester only had £4m to spend and they were 20 mins away from the qualifying for the Champions League

You can’t be 100% sure about that regarding the revival, they went through that much dross by the law of averages sooner or later they’d had to get it right & they did & it happened to be bielsa, right place right time, if it wasn’t him it would have been someone else, being blindfolded chucking pebbles in a far off bin 1 day you’ll hit the target if you throw often enough.

We are discussing Bielsa and what he's had to spend in the one season hes been in the Premier League and I am comparing that with what Sean Dyche had to spend in the same season. The last one.
That’s a bit selective though? There squad actually cost less than ours and they finished on 59 points.

I’m puzzled why Bielsa isn’t top of Spurs list for their new manager. He’s out of contract and obviously a football genius.
