As per the title. Would be shocked if Tarks doesn’t at least make this large selection now.

I would be very surprised if he was called up as recent squads show Tarky is not in the plans for England either now or in the future.

I like White and hoped two seasons ago we might have tried to bring him in.

An excellent player over the last two seasons and also very versatile covering midfield as well as defense

Hate to say it, but he has shown himself to be better than JT this season

Who’s Ben White? And where is he in all the “best of the Premier League” teams I keep seeing Tarky in?

Stats wise Tarks has better numbers defensively buy a decent margin.

However White passes it a bit more which is probably what Southgate wants as he's prioritising passing over defensive capability.

A summer of rest for Tarks is better for us anyway, but also if he really wants to move he can crack on and get that done and out of the way early in the window.

I reckon what we should do is pick 22 players and then just pick a random bloke off the street and play him. It would add entertainment value :)

Amazing that a central defender only makes 29 tackles in a season.

29 tackles because the ball generally is in the other half of the pitch. For balance we conceded more goals than Fulham. Stats are irrelevant if you want them to be in your favour.

Being good at defending isn't that important in the modern game, likewise shot stopping for a goal keeper.

Distribution is seen as more important

Ben White is a terrific prospect. He should replace Dyer in the squad who is technically there because he can play defensive midfield and CH. Dyer is simply not good enough, based on this seasons form with Tottenham, to be a defender for England in the Euros

I'd love to see some stats on how many goals are scored from playing out from the keeper, compared to how many are conceded trying to do it and failing.

A manager always preferring youth to experience, will never mature a side capable of winning tournaments.

When you look at Alfred Ramsey's 66 side, Jack Charlton was there for a purpose. Jimmy Greaves was there for a purpose, Nobby Stiles, similarly. Not always most accomplished but best at what they did. Greaves didn't run or close down. Just scored goals.

He added one or two youn, different, energy players to complete the blend of accomplished footballers, mature and best in position and youth with energy.

Alan Ball and Martin Peters come to mind.

Southgate plays them too early, it must go to their head and then they lose form and never quite recover.
The list is endless.

John Stones is a classic, still learning and very fallible player, who messes up by over complicating.

Never mind, someone will catch the eye. There is always another tournament!

Llllalllana is clearly Welsh - and we might need him, so hands off. Of course, Lewes Dunk is from a town just North East of Brighton, so you can have him. We are also claiming Matt Fydrau.

Paolo Maldini's view on tackling - it is a shame the article is from the Sun

DEFENDER'S DREAM Paolo Maldini: The defender so good, he didn’t even need to make a tackle
Italian legend spent his entire career at AC Milan but he rarely put a foot in as he averaged only 0.56 challenges per game

DAVE FRASER
11:06, 12 Apr 2016 Updated: 8:47, 9 Jun 2016

“If I have to make a tackle then I have already made a mistake.”

That is the sentiment of Italy legend Paolo Maldini.

At first glance, it seems like an odd thing to say as one of the greatest defenders in footballing history.

When you think of defending, your mind tends to think of getting stuck into a good, old-fashioned tackle.

But, the one-club man, 47 — who spent his entire career at AC Milan — averaged only 0.56 challenges per game during his career.

It’s staggering to think that Maldini achieved what he did, without ever really needing to lunge in.

It speaks volumes for a man whose positioning and ability to read the game was second to none.

So let’s go back to that line: “If I have to make a tackle then I have already made a mistake.”

It’s a sentiment echoed by Bayern Munich and former Liverpool and Real Madrid holding midfielder Xabi Alonso.

He said: “I don’t think tackling is a quality. It is something you have to resort to, not a characteristic of your game.

“I can’t get into my head that football development would educate tackling as a quality, something to learn, to teach, a characteristic of your play.

“How can that be a way of seeing the game? I just don’t understand football in those terms.

“Tackling is a [last] resort, and you will need it, but it isn’t a quality to aspire to, a definition.

“It’s hard to change because it’s so rooted in the English football culture, but I don’t understand it.”

Well, Alonso’s way of thinking is definitely the way Maldini looked at the game.

The left-footed Italian went about playing the beautiful game as if it were a chess match — eyeing up his opponents and plotting their moves well before they happened.

His ability to be in the right place, at the right time is something lacking in the modern game.

For instance, the top defenders in the Premier League this season are averaging between four and five tackles per game — hardly massive numbers, but it’s nearly TEN times more than Maldini ever needed.

And look what he achieved in the game...

902 appearances for AC Milan, 126 international caps for Italy, five Champions League trophies, seven Serie A titles, five Super Cups, five Supercoppa Italiana and more personal gongs than you could shake a stick at.

I could go on, but we would be here all day; his record as a footballer is almost unsurpassable — particularly by a fellow defender.

Ultimately, the best way to sum up Maldini could be the world ‘elegant’.

To read the game like he did, to break up the play like he did and start an attack with his ability to pass the ball without ever needing to tackle like he did?

It’s something we may never see on a football pitch again.

Who is Tarks better than of the players selected?

I would argue similar quality. People have to take into consideration style of play. Tarks is in one of the most protected CB roles in the league. He plays in a deep block that defends with 9 men most games. That is simply not how England play.

Tarks is a monster in our set up but I think we have seen it on a number of occasions this season, that when the defence is stretched he usually concedes a number of goals.

So he can play everyone in an unnatural position, they can then pass the ball around aimlessly without any real idea of what they should be doing....eventually going back to Pitchfork to start the process over again.

Not really no.

Some players are versatile and they've done it for their clubs.
In the past, versatility wasn't an encouraged trait, but now it is and as Southgate said this afternoon, it allows the formation to be changed depending on the opposition

All of them bar Maguire and Stones. He is miles ahead of Coady/Mings/White/Godfrey. Dunk/Tomori/Konsa and Keane are better than them as well.
Southgate has picked the second best Brighton/Everton and Villa English defenders. Thats how bad it is.

He is highly rated the strange thing for me is why didn’t Lewis Dunk get in instead of him he is clearly currently the better defender of them 2 anyway. For what it is worth I think Southgate doesn’t rate Tarky it is an opinion he is entitled too I don’t agree but I won’t be calling him because of it.

Bit of an unbalanced squad
12 defenders with four right backs/wing backs
10 forwards
7 midfielders

OK, it's going to be trimmed down but not in midfield
12 defenders suggests a back three plus wing backs so doubt TAA and another RB will make the final squad along with Godfrey
Saka and Watkins also likely to miss out and I would take Grealish over Sancho
Last one to miss out for me would, based on current form, be Sterling

No one will ultimately care how England play if they with the Euro Championships.

Kane

Thoughts?

Exactly, that’s why you have to trust the manager that gave us our best finish in my lifetime.

The fact that no pros/pundits are even highlighting Tarks as an option tells you everything you need to know.

He’s a monster in a deep block defence. I don’t think he could play in a defence that plays further up the pitch with little cover.

There are genuine injury concerns for Maguire but anyone else ?

Picking 26 and explaining to others why they were not included in that squad would have been hard enough

But the fact that he has now named 33 means he is going to have some even more difficult conversations with up to seven of the guys named

A man who can't be seen to make tough decisions is also seen as a weak man - you only have to look and listen to the guy to know he is missing a backbone and other things from his nether region
