Uefa meeting this week and one thing they're considering doing away with is the away goal rule.

Would potentially stop clubs sitting on a lead they've gained if they've played the away fixture first.

If implemented, it would also stop away teams attacking in the first leg, to gain that advantage.

Don't see much point in scrapping it after all this time.

I never have liked it.
a goal is a goal, nothing more because it's scored away.

An away team to stop attacking due to a rule change

Are you mad

Was a good rule back in the day where teams like Liverpool and the Italian sides were experts at shutting up shop away for a 0-0 and winning 1-0 at home as it rewarded the away teams that were a bit braver and more attacking.

In recent years the rule has had a reverse effect and actually resulted in home teams being very cagy about conceding away goals in the first leg. Often the home team will play conservatively to protect against away goals and the away team will play conservatively as they will see a draw in the first leg a great result.

Get it scrapped and let both teams go hammer and tongs at each other for 180 mins and let the team with the most goals regardless go through

Not quite away goals but this is the best story around what can happen when idiots put in rules to make certain goals count double

No, I'm not mad. I don't know how old you are, but that's why the rule was brought in to start with. To stop away teams sitting back and just defending. The away goal rule gave them an incentive to attack more and make for a more entertaining game.

One of the few things UEFA did that worked.

Personally I don't mind the away goals rule. I don't find teams overly defensive at home and I think it's a better solution than a lot of games which drag out to 120 minutes and then are decided by penalties.

I do object to the away goals rule only counting after 120 minutes though ;-)

I agree about the 120 minutes. Why should the home team in the second leg, be given longer to try and win the game?

Or the away side, for that matter, remember Spurs?

Yes, it should only ever count for 90 minutes. It's such an unfair advantage to the away team.

When it was brought it in it was desperately needed. European football was a bore fest with away teams with 10 or 11 behind the ball. An excellent idea.
Currently football is more attacking and dropping it, if only as an experiment, might be worth a try.
