Re: On the eve of the championship play off final this always come to mind.
I remember the day poignantly now.
We went by car and had a great day as all Clarets did. After the game we went back to the underground station and I bumped into a good friend who, unlike him, gave me a big hug. On the way back up the M40 we stopped at the services and the first person I saw in there was another good friend.
Those two friends were Alan Beecroft & Jo Cunningham. Neither of them are here now. Alan passed away last year at 66 and Jo in 2017 aged just 50.
I can never think of that day now without thinking of them both.

It’s odd isn’t it? Because of the result Wembley was superb. The following 24 hours were a blur. Sitting outside an off licence after the game, in Wembley getting smashed with locals waiting until the crowds had died down. Going out in Camden with some mates from London and getting even more smashed. Reading the papers in our hotel on Tuesday morning and just marvelling at we had achieved.
Yet still. Somehow. Reading away. If I could bottle either moment. It would be Reading away. I’m a weirdo.

Reading away in the play offs has gone down in Clarets history as one of the greatestCheshireclaret wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 11:59 pm

occasions in the clubs recent past for me.
Yes, Wembley was fantastic, but the Reading game was in another League.
Patos goal was like slow motion, but in a good way, of course.

I was sober chauffeur for Reading away as well. My passengers drank all the way back. Stopping off here and there for alcohol. Crawled into bed about 6am. Didn’t sleep. Just went to work the following day and loved it.ElectroClaret wrote: ↑Sat May 29, 2021 12:09 amReading away in the play offs has gone down in Clarets history as one of the greatest

Travelled up with my son from Malta. Had to leave immediately after the final whistle to catch our plane back so missed all the celebrations and trophy presentation
On the way to the tube station we were in the midst of crestfallen blades fans but we were over the moon. On the same flight back I spotted a blade who has a weekly column on a local Sunday paper and he was gutted poor chap.

I actually remember very little of it. And I didn’t drink that day at all. Had one pint when I got home and couldn’t stomach it. Was all a blur. Don’t know whether that was the occasion or the fact I went for one pint the dinner time before... and didn’t get in until 5am and nearly miss the ride down!Cheshireclaret wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 11:59 pmIt’s odd isn’t it? Reading was arguably a more remarkable result. They were a really good side. And just bottled it against us. As did Kevin Blackwell in the studio.
Missed Reading as it was mrs 21st. Still can’t believe I missed it. Although was worth it two new clarets later

Re Reading game , I worked at the John Madejeski Academy at the time and I've never enjoyed going to work the day after a match as much. The Chelsea supporting Principal congratulated me along with many Reading fans who admitted we were the better team
The best bit of the final was the end.It was nervy, especially when Kalvenes launched the Sheff Utd striker into mid air inside the box only for the ref to wave play on

Everything about that day was pretty much spot on. Especially working in Sheffield at the time and driving back up surrounded by Blades fans. Have to say, they were very sound about it. Can’t imagine losing a play off final..
Looking forward to today’s match, great to watch when the tension isn’t yours.
