I hope it's OK to post this thread it's strictly to pay tribute to Alfred White's service for his country, do not make this a political thread as that would be disrespectful to him and his family.
RIP Alfred thanks for your service during WWII, shame you couldn't reach your century, but 98 is a ripe old age to live too.

My old maths teacher died a few years back and it wasn't until the eulogy from his son that I learned he'd been at Normandy. He was deaf as a post and it was down to him having been in the artillery. He never talked about it and I'd got to know him quite well, many years after he'd retired. Probably parked the memories somewhere very deep.

My late father came ashore on Sword beach on D-Day, 6th June, 1944, so, of course, I completely agree with the sentiment of this post.
God Bless them All.

Another of the truly Golden Generation gone.
Jeez, how lucky were we to have men like Alfred and all his brave comrades when it mattered.
RIP Sir, and thank you.

My dad fought in World War II but was sunning it up in Italy rather than being anywhere near Dunkirk. He never spoke about it really other than resisting foreign holidays with my mum with his usual: “I had enough of abroad during the war.”
But nothing but respect from me for what these men did.
RIP Alfred.

Have you seen Gary Lineker’s documentary about his Grandfather in Italy? Was absolutely brutal out there.
My Grandpa was evacuated from Dunkirk 81 years ago yesterday.

The last surviving WW2 soldier from my family passed away in 2018.
He was an officer with the Gurkhas and saw action over in Burma.
He never spoke about what he went through.
RIP to them all.

My Granddad (on the right), in Burma (I believe) must be towards the end of the war, he wouldn't have been that old.

Only photo I have - taken in Venice (I think) after the war had ended. My dad stood on the left of the pic.

Just a brief mention of the Italy campaign. It was indeed brutal for those on the front line. A man I used to visit in a local Care Home was at Monte Cassino and told me that the soldiers used to live on their stomachs during the day time because if they showed any part of their upper bodies they would be automatically killed by snipers, so any movement had be done at night. My own father was in the Italy campaign ( after serving in North Africa.) These men earned our unending gratitude . May those who died at the time and have died since RIP.

My late uncle Alf who was 3 years older than my dad was a regular prior to World War II.
He was also evacuated from Dunkirk and was shot in the chest on D Day plus 2 - he survived and ran a shop with my auntie Edna for years. He never said a thing about it and I got all this from my dad.

My mums brother was at Dunkirk. Served in the Medical Corps.
Didnt attend the reunions, didn't speak about the horrors he witnessed.
Little did he know he'd , indirectly, be helping to save the life of his future brother- in - law.
Humble gentlemen. Bless them.all.
