O/T Phone/Privacy advice

Hopefully someone on here will understand & can explain to me, in easy to understand terms, the following.
Last night at around 8pm I googled “echelon” a brand of fitness bike that I saw an advert for on TV.
Today at noon my girlfriend texted and asked if I was planning on buying an exercise bike because she was getting ads on her Facebook for “Echelon”
My girlfriend hasn’t been at my house since about 2hrs before I googled “echelon”.
My question is how is her phone (completely unlinked phone accounts, different networks, Apple ids etc) which spent the night about 3 miles away from mine knowing what I searched for?
I could understand it if she was in the house & connecting to my wi-fi but not this 🤷🏼‍♂️
Oh and how do I stop it? 😂

The real lesson here is don't be looking at something you shouldn't be looking at when the mrs isn't there

You will have had a tracking cookie or whatever they are called when you searched on Google and went to the website. You probably approved the privacy policy and cookies settings that allowed this.

They then got your Facebook account by tracking you and then facebook did its magic by probably advertising to people that have been on your IP address/or you have a connection to on Facebook perhaps if you have said you are in a relationship with this person?

The above may be rubbish and it could just be a coincidence. If you see an ad - click on the 3 dots above it and you can see how you have been targeted.

Click why am I seeing this ad.

That's a swell idea if she's around most of the time in addition to working as well & restricted with phone usage, sometimes it's unavoidable & not really practical browsing covert.

This is a bit more US centric, there are more limitations on what you can do with this kind of data in Europe (although a similar gist).

There are lots of options for cutting down on this kind of thing. Either using browser extensions to block ads to something a bit more comprehensive like this https://nextdns.io/
