Favourite Beers/Breweries

Post by jedi_master » Tue Jun 08, 2021 2:47 pm

In advance of the Euro's and a desire to stock up - I wondered what peoples choice beers are and any recommendations?

It seems obvious to say as I believe they are one of the top rated breweries in the UK, but I find myself loving pretty much everything that Verdant put out. The absolute king for me is one of their DIPA's called Pulp. A deadly drink considering the ABV and how easily it sinks - ultra strong mango flavour, a real delight.

Absolutely spoilt for choice in Manchester/wider Lancashire area, but Pomona Island are ace, especially for pales and DIPAs, TIPAs etc. Other than that, Marble (recent criticism aside), Wander Beyond, Rivington, Buxton are all very decent.

Fierce from Aberdeen have opened in the old Marble place at 57 Thomas St in Manchester, and their beer is top notch.

Chang beer is my favourite but hardly anywhere sells it and when they do its in those tiny cans.

Golden Pippin is my favourite draught - but again its very rare.........

Verdant, Pollys, DEYA , Cloudwater are always reliable.

I would reccomend a go with North or Salt that are local to me.

Had a few drinks on the Bermondsey Beer Mile this weekend and Brew By Numbers and Bianca Road Brewery are very nice. The latter seems to be a much smaller and value for money brewery.

Have you tried your local Tesco ? I saw this today in the Tesco Express in Leeds Centre. It was with the 'Asian Foods/Produce' rather than with the beers.

I signed up for one of those a while ago, I'm sure it was Beer52. Trying to cancel after the free one was a pain in the arse; waited ages on hold then had some bloke trying to give a real hard sell before he would cancel it, trying to justify £3 a can by the inclusion of a magazine. Don't care mate, I'll go back to getting 4 for £6 and a copy of Razzle from Asda.

Bought a Philips perfect draught machine last year and have tried Lowenbrau,Jupiler,Stella(proper Belgium stuff),Becks and have a Spanish La Virgin360 on the go at the moment which is a refreshing citrus flavoured ipa.Kegs start around £30 for 6L then you get £5 back in beer tokens to use off your next keg (Beer Hawk).

Did both of them a couple of years ago, along with the utterly bonkers London Calling Sweden further down. Proper ace is the Beer Mile, well worth a visit if you're in the capital.

I wasn’t familiar with Salt, just checked them out. Some lovely sounding stouts, will have to get an order in.

I inherited my favourite beer from my dad... just like my choice of football team. Timothy Taylor’s Landlord.
Fairly mainstream now... a bit like my football team.

The kegs are designed to fit the Philips draught machine and just take a few seconds to change.Store them somewhere cool as the machine has to get them down to 3 degrees.

Anything from Vocation at Hebden is excellent, as is their brewery tap, but my favourite tipple atm is pretty much anything (except the odd really strong one) from Swannay Brewery in Orkney. Get yourself a mixed case sent down. It's really, really good stuff and the couple who started it and have really grown it into a thriving concern are originally from the Burnley area and the guy learned his trade at Moorhouse's among other places some years back. (Swannay Brewery is not to be confused with Orkney Brewery which is the other brewery on the islands)

Verdant - 20 Watt Moon

I have just had the pleasure of this beauty again in my garden, can I recommend that any IPA drinkers get an immediate order in. Fantastic.

Thanks for all the tips above.

Are there any "session" IPAs that you'd particularly recommend? Find that i increasingly struggle with anything over 6%! And have you had any interesting lagers recently?

Plenty places do Pippin around this way (W Yorks) though I suppose it is a Yorkshire brewery. My local does Landlord, Pippin and Saltaire Blonde, which is a great choice despite most of the old locals not wanting owt but Tetley’s **** water!!

Camden Pale Ale and Moorhouses Blonde Witch are great alternatives too.

All the ones I’ve mentioned are under 6%.

I often forget to check the ABV when trying new ones on a night out - bad move! I’ve learned that as a rule of thumb, the more ridiculous the name, the stronger the ale!!

"session IPA..."

Look, you drink an IPA or not. Have a Pale Ale if you want something weaker.

Tim Taylor’s Landlord or Golden Best. Golden best is just like drinking pop, just flows down the throat. Brought up on Taylor’s tbh.

Saltaire Blonde if kept right can be absolutely stunning.

Vocation brewery are top notch don’t think ever had a bad pint from that brewery.

If you have one bottle of McEwans Champion a day, that's OK at home.

Having had three last night... McEwans Export is very good and nice bottle.

You can't beat Timmy Taylors.

I used to play for the eponymous Boltmakers Arms in Keighley, and our shirts were sponsored by Oasis - yes, the band. Worth a bit now but I've no idea where mine is.

Another shout for Vocation.

Arbor (that's the spelling) of Bristol do some good stuff, in proper pint cans.

Had a lovely stout con vanilla called Shadowplay, from the Cierzo brewing company in Zaragoza. Very nice, not cheap but nice, nonetheless.

Castle Rock dont do a bad beer like Vocation, Saucery is a lower alcohol session beer that's loaded with flavour. Its available from Tesco's and would be the ideal beer to be pouring in the kitchen while they get the taking the knee garbage out the way.

Beavertown Neck Oil is my go-to beer at home and when I’m out and find it on draught that’s me set for the night.
Not sure where you live but if you are ever in Clitheroe the Ale House has had it on draught for the last five years and it’s the best pint around

Unfortunately not. But luckily it is on tap at quite a number of places local to me.

since I've not been in pubs for over a year I have very much enjoyed these in bottles:
Adnam's Broadside 6.3%
Morland's Crafty Hen and Speckled Hen 6.5% & 5%
Shepherd Neame 1698 and India Pale Ale 6.1% & 6.5%
Timothy Taylor's Landlord
McEwan's Champion. 7.3%

but only ever 1 per night!
With the exception of TT Landlord, these are all ales with a hefty ABV, hence the 1 per night comment i guess. Although very different to most of the massively hopped citrus flavoured IPAs that are prevalent, i love the Shepherd Neame India Pale Ale. Tastes of a proper old fashioned strong ale. Most if not all of there are usually in the 4 for £6 offer at Morrisons.
