Very nervous up and coming sportsmen

Up and down the country, indeed all around the world, there must be thousands of young men and women whose dreams of making it big in their chosen sport are being mixed with another emotion - fear. Fear of being "exposed" as a racist or a sexist or a host of other ists based on posts or tweets from their past that they would rather not come to light.
Unfortunately, they always do, especially when you have "journalists" who spend their time digging up this stuff and then put it to one side until the optimum moment - maybe during a Test Match?
There must be very few of us who haven't said things in the past that we wouldn't now, but for those about to be famous there will be no escape and no forgiveness in the Court of public opinion on behalf of those wronged.

If they aren't "washing" their social media accounts by now then it's their own fault if they get caught out.

Many clarets who stood on the Longside during the 70’s & 80’s would fall foul of this if recordings existed.

Is that what society has become, looking for things in the past to be triggered about.

Seems so, it’s become a sad sad world were people are not allowed to change, grow up.
Also journalism is by no means a squeaky clean profession.

If we’re being honest, the majority of us would be mortified about some things we said as teenagers.
But fortunately we didn’t have social media recording our stupid or cruel comments then so we’ve still got the option of sounding impeccably righteous on the internet.

I got rid of face book about 10 years ago, Twitter around 5 years ago, I wrote some absolutely shocking and embarrassing things in my late teens and in my MSN days. I just have a private Instagram account now.
Thankfully I’ve never wrote anything racist and I never would, I just don’t have that type of thought but I’ve seen some bad posts by mates that I’m sure don’t actually hold those type of views but are showing off.

Can I ask you a genuine question. Do you agree with taking the knee? Just a one word answer will do.

If it's still on their social media now, it's not in their past.

Jimmy Anderson now under investigation for a tweet 11 years ago saying Chris Broads hair cut made him “look like a 15 yr old lesbian”

Context is important here, I wont expand on this as it will likely breach forum rules.

The question there is, was the statement accurate?

Having given you my one word answer:
I don't see it as effective in any way and is now actually being counter productive.
They are backing themselves into a corner. They will never be able to stop it now without causing upset.
Why doesn't Dermot do it at the start of the X Factor?
Why doesn't the PM do it at PMQs?

I think context is key as you mentioned above but you miss it in texts etc, it is clear this is just banter between Broad and Anderson but someone out there will find this offensive and in fact already have sadly. Racism, sexism isn’t necessarily about what is said or wrote it is about how it is heard or read unfortunately this is different for everyone. I can have banter with a friend for years that is just between me and him/her even though my friend doesn’t find what is said or done offensive someone else not involved could and then report it.

Why ask this question what is the relevance to this subject?
I won’t guess why you asked but I will state you can believe in racial/ sexual equality without believing in taking the knee. For me taking the knee is synonymous with BLM no matter what the current wording of why the players take a knee. I don’t agree with that organisation it has gone way beyond it’s stated goals although i do agree with a lot of it’s original goals ie everyone should be treated the same no matter there race, sex etc. So I would say I don’t like or agree with taking the knee but everyone to there own I would never be sad enough to boo it though.

The reason I asked was to get a better understanding of the OP following his disparaging post about a female manager and her children's names yesterday, this post where the title only refers to sportsmen and his view on a gesture that challenges inequality.
I have a better understanding of him now.

Just think all those years ago reaching up an outstretched right arm was only for reaching the top shelf of the pantry… until those pesky Nazi’s owned it for them selves.
Intended dark humour is included free of charge in this post

And I of you.
If you could only read you would see that I referred to men and women in my post.
My post was about past comments coming back to haunt people - I didn't bring the taking of the knee into it.

Why is there a need to include the whole world in banter between mates?

If I am outside and I call my friend whatever which is acceptable between me and him/ her, if someone else overhears and complains, is that including the whole world?

You'll get no sense from The FC - more chance of understanding PStotto's drivel.

You're defending banter between mates but when that banter is on social media it is in the public domain. Why is there a need to share it with the world?
You've compared it to speaking privately to a friend on the phone. If you were in a public place, chatting on your phone calling your mate **** within the earshot of kids, is that ok because you weren't talking to the kids?

Anyone else find it hilarious to see these clowns get hit with extra charges for flights etc when the rules change on them in mid holiday?
Just read about some "Manager" and her kids (Indi and Fleur for god's sake).
Anyone choosing to risk it at this moment gets no sympathy.
No one is that desperate for some sunshine.

Hmmm okay not sure I defended anything just pointed out what can happen. I wouldn’t put anything on social media like that not that anyone would care what I wrote nothing to gain from saving anything I wrote.
As an aside in the early 90s when I finished my Army basic training I was posted to Germany I was immediately referred to as a N.I.G (New Intake Gunner or New In Germany) no racist Conotones I called jumior Gunners to me it for a bit. Anyway I couldn’t and wouldn’t use that term on social media and wouldn’t refer to anyone with that either in a private conversation or public as I know what it CAN be misconstrued as but that is the sort of thing I am on about.
