Lytham and St Anne's clarets/regulars

I go over a few times a year with the family and dog for an evening.

We tend to go on a whim, so never really plan a place to eat, now with our puppy in tow it needed to be dog friendly.

Tonight we ( the kids ) have opted for fish and chips, so is there anywhere you can recommend that we can visit for a proper good fish and chips.

Dont mind if it isnt right on the front as we can go there first on the way, then park up and eat.

If going to Lytham, we tend to use ‘Whelans’ which is on the Main Street - turn right at the square if coming from the sea front and it’s about 200 yards walk up.

There is a new one that has opened in St.Anne’s next to the beach. It overlooks the small man made lake which sometimes has the inflatable ‘water walkers’ on. We’ve not tried it so can’t comment on quality etc.

Losing my days...yes tonight!! Both Chippys on the Lytham high st Shut Bang on 8pm.....also five minutes past the Windmill towards Preston. Very Cheap Fuel..Also Shuts at 8pm.

Theres a little shop on the Main Street in Lytham that sells the best Lancashire Parkin. Its next to the book shop. Sells it by weight and cuts it off huge chunks.
Absolutely gorgeous.

Lytham or St Annes Macca ? Beach better down at St Annes and the new chippy mentioned by one poster (overlooking the lake between the pier and YMCA has plenty of seats outside (takeaway in boxes as well) It is supposed to be good (only opened recently). Right on the beach as well

We have decided to go with claretandy's suggestion as it was seconded by ASC too.
We will park up around there and walk to the Windmill at Lytham and back, it says just over 3 miles 1 way.

The Mrs and dog are raising money for cancer research by walking 60 miles in June, so will get a few miles in the bank too.
So if you see her in her cancer research fundraiser top ( the wife not the dog ) give her a beep beep!

We will try the Lytham one when we arent wanting to get some miles in, and we can just relax, eat, have a beer and a leisurely wonder.

I used to work in St Anne’s in the early 80s but I don’t get over much these days. All the chippies we used to use have probably gone now but eating them on the front was always a winner.

Opposite coast, but we got fish and chips from the Magpie in Whitby the other week. They’ve gone down hill from what they used to be like, really disappointing.

Well I said I'd give Tim a review of St Anne's fish restaurant so here it is.

I thought it was decent, but nothing I've not had before.
Everything charged and wrapped separately, so you have to slide your fish onto your tray of chips and half your batter stays on the paper and all the salt in the wrapping just lands in a pile.

Fish was nice size, nice crispy batter on top, bottom stuck to the wrapper, nice big flakes.

The curry sauce was the sort that has currents or sultanas in, and more sweet and tangy than hot, and I dont rate thst type.

Gravy was very good, best I've had for a while from a takeaway.

Chips were good, but lots of small thin well browned crunchy ones which I dont mind, but kids not so much.
Might have been the bottom of the bucket or last lot in the warmer.

Service was excellent.

Price point £8.50 for take out fish and chips served how it was, with the quality it was, was just about ok, so my overall rating would be

£31 for 3 fish and chips, 1 sausage and chips, small curry and a small gravy.

7/10

Will try one of the others mentioned on my next visit over.

The chippy across the road from the ground we’re never fans of you putting your own on - I had to grab hold of them before she realised!!

I’ve never liked mushy peas - horrible things, but I think I’m in a minority with that one.

I ordered a carton of each as daughter wanted gravy for her sausage. A tip, NEVER let the server drown anything you buy with sauces, peas or seasoning, always pay the premium for cartons so you can add as much as you please, and incase its shite quality, you dont wreck your food with cheap ingredients
I like to dip my my excess chips in at the end, as theres always way too many chip ratio to fish with fish and chips.
I do not harm the fish with anything other than vinegar then salt.

Ps they didnt provide Heinz ketchup the kids had to do with sachets of chefs larder sauce

Anyway, got home and my wife decided to plate them up as we were sharing two portions between the two of us and my son (the portions are massive so no issue there). I went upstairs to wash my hands and came down to tuck into my fish, chips and mushy peas only to find the whole lot covered in curry sauce. Nooooooo…. you wanted the curry sauce not me! Fair ruined my evening!

Obviously some chippies are better than others. But the amount of times I’ve heard xxx is the best chippy in xxx. The reality is the majority of popular chippies are much of a muchness as there’s only so many variables involved in frying potatoes and battered fish.
