Nuno was 1/20 in the betting two days ago but it’s looking like Benitez is going to be the new Everton manager

Liverpool Echo quoting Jim White from Sky Sports saying Rafa is "on the brink" of being named Everton boss.

That's cos the Everton owner has money to splash, otherwise Rafa wouldn't be going there.

I don't think the Everton board realise how much the fans hate him.
Two blues I know who have already renewed have said they won't go while he's in charge.

I daren't ring my dad, it would be an angry phone call. His ST didn't get used while Fat Sam was in charge. No chance with the Fat Spanish waiter in charge.

Probably about the best Everton could attract.

Spoke to 1 mate who is a season ticket holder and his words were "not the manager I want but it is the club I support, did before he arrived and will after he has gone"

Some of the reactions to this have been weird, they would have no problem turning up to watch their team if they signed Alisson, Van Dijk and Salah this summer, but then Everton while having some of the most down to earth fans do have some of the most deluded in the division

I can understand the Everton fans reaction, but Benitez loves the City and he people… so it’s not a surprise he fancies more time (he’ll not get Liverpool again).

Personally I’ve always liked the guy… but then again I’m not an Everton fan.

We seem to be reaching a point where clubs vying for the next step up are shopping in the market China was operating. There seems very little attention to long term football planning.

Some will get levels of success that keep them on the treadmill, but there will be a lot of money wasted chasing egos. I like Benitez but this does seem a really bad fit… but with the same managers doing the roundabout at least they have a genuine target, however unpalatable it may seem to fans. It looks like Spurs and Palace should be thinking of advertising the the Metro for any interested parties should call them.

There is speculation that the lenders who are financing the Stadium build are insisting that Everton have a safe pair of hands to ensure Premier League status/competitiveness so that when it eventually opens - work has still not started, even though everything was cleared a few months back.

There are always bigger pictures that most fans resolutely refuse to recognise until it is in support of their own view point

I wonder about the hot air wafting round managers like Benitez at times.

I don't know how usual this is but he appears to have his own web site extolling the virtues of..... Rafa Benitez

http://www.rafabenitez.com/web/in/

When you look back through his record the last trophy he won was the Championship with Newcastle in 2017

Prior to that he won the Europa league/Cup with Chelsea when he was kind of temporarily in charge in 2013.
He seems to be good at winning domestic cups and of course he won the Champions League with Liverpool
but he has only won two top flight League titles which were with Valencia back in 2002 and 2004 at the outset of his career.

or to put it differently, he has won considerably more cups and tiles than Everton during the timespan of his career, including at what most would consider a club of lesser standing than Everton in their respective league

but you will have to explain to me how the lesser standing thing works with regards to those clubs in relation to Everton.

I think the difference comes from the change in Everton’s manager recruitment policy. Everton achieved success by getting young eager managers with a point to prove… Kendall over achieving with Rovers, Moyes with Preston spring to mind. All of a sudden it’s about established names, football nomads who tip up for a couple of years on top money. Everton operated like Burnley do now and built steadily on a limited budget, signings that sometimes raised eyebrows but more often from not they appeared like magic from nowhere. Obviously Kenright’s wallet dictated it to a large degree, but now the club seems unsure which table they sit at…

They're trying to break into the top 6, they need big name managers to attract the players to enable them to do that.
Rodriguez was never gonna sign for Everton if someone like Silva, or even Dyche, was there.
Managers like Ancelotti and even Benitez help to give players of a certain caliber that a club is trying to step up a level and match the ambitions of said players.

Everton don't have a recent trophy winning history and current players won't care about what the club did in the 80's, it simply isn't relevant to them.

Apparently, the Everton board are split over the Benitez appointment. The new owner ( the guy with all the money ), and his cronies are for it. But the older members, and Bill Kenwright in particular, are well against it, for the reasons stated earlier in the thread, as obviously they are Everton fans.

I’m sorry I do not get the relevance of this. I think everyone is well aware of the reasons it’s happening. I was stating the reason it does not sit so well with Everton’s fans.

Yes that's right, but it isn't the normal fans who decide the direction of the club, who the manager is or "which table they're going to sit at".

Everton’s owner knows what he wants, he just needs to find the right combo, but its going to involve and need high profile, proven managers to attract the better players.

But some of them will never learn that super individuals on mega bucks stay a couple of seasons… you need time to build an ethos at a club, as we know… if your trying to break the glass ceiling… to be honest with good management behind the scenes, I prefer the slow and steady progression, otherwise it’s soulless and so is the club.

Yet the average work life expectancy of a football manager is about 18mths isn't it?

We won't see another Fergie, or Wenger, those days are gone.
Clubs and managers rarely show loyalty to each other nowadays.

Like Spurs, Everton need to start winning trophies again.
Once they've broken the cycle of being almost rans it then becomes easier to take more forwards steps if you've got rich backers.

Nuno did a good job at Wolves, but was potted for finishing midtable when their 5yr plan was to get into the champions league, no real loyalty from Wolves after he got them up, kept them up and sacked after a difficult season.
Expect the same at Villa if they finish mid table this coming season.

Chelsea have sacked managers so often I'm fairly sure most of us would fail to name them all since Abramovich took charge.

I was staggered to discover the other day that Everton have never won the League Cup, for a club of their stature that shocked me, and since their brief glory days of the mid 1980's they've never really produced any long term success, their only trophy of note was the FA Cup in 1995, which when you consider some of the teams who've lifted the cup since definitely represents a major underperformance, is Rafa the man to change their fortunes IDK, but they'll struggle to get anyone better in my humble opinion.

That was the argument against the Premier league in the first place that a perminantly gap would appear between the haves/nearly haves and have nots. Clubs under the old system had a period of ascendency… Liverpool most notably but clubs like Villa, Forest, Leeds, Ipswich could still hope for a purple patch to break it up…. Why was Leicester’s success such a media frenzy… because that is not supposed to happen now.

Promoted in the 1950s, only Arsenal have been in the top flight longer in an broken run. When I first started watching football they had replaced Sunderland as the moneybags club through the Moores family. Champions in 1963 and again in 1970 with the FA Cup win in 1966 but little else other than those few years in the 1980s when they had an exceptional team. Yet in the early 90s they were one of the big five clubs behind the Premier League.
