f1-g3
Black can do:
a7-b8 - pointless
b6-b5 - pointless
g7-g6 - pointless
so it comes down to what black does with Knights or the pawn in f2
Pawn in f2-f1 promote to Queen - then White Knight g3-f5 Checkmate (I think!)
or
Knight g5 to anywhere, I think has no effect - then White Knight g3-f5 Checkmate (I think!)
or
Knight f4 to anywhere, I also think has no effect - then White Knight g3-f5 Checkmate (I think!)
that what I think anyway

Q to H8
Black - as long as they don’t move the knights, king is stuck in place
Q to G7, whether the pawn has moved or not
Checkmate

Re: Chess puzzle
I think first move is Q to C6. It threatens mate on d6. Only way Black can defend is by moving one of their knights but when that happens it frees either d5 or e4 to mate depending which black Knight is moved

Doesn't that then allow Q to take Black pawn on b6 to mate?

I didn’t think you could have a pawn next to a king but I haven’t played in 50 years.

But that frees up e4 for the queen to mate as the knight you've just moved was defending that square

Black night is not right
I don't feel so bright
I don't care to sit tight
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
That I'm free, free to be me
Black night is a long way from home
I don't need a dark tree
I don't want a rough sea
I can't feel, I can't see
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line

Doesn’t that turn it into checkmate in 3 moves, not 2?Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 8:31 pmBut that frees up e4 for the queen to mate as the knight you've just moved was defending that square
I was thinking along those lines initially

Re: Chess puzzle
Good point. My 3 move reply was more in reference to “what if black moved another piece instead of the rooks” without reviewing the board.
My only argument would be - what if black moves the pawn from B6 to B5. How would you get checkmate in 1 more move? Q to B6 would be taken by bishop, Queen to D6 is still covered by Rook

Re: Chess puzzle
Think you're getting you knights and rooks mixed up but if black just moved the pawn my solution was that white would continue to mate with Qd6 but as ST has shown and what maybe you was trying to pont out Black can defend with kf4-d6 which defeats meJrC wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 11:05 pmGood point. Yeah, I’d had a long day and it looks like I was getting my words mixed up. Glad to see my reasoning was still right though

Re: Chess puzzle
Queen to A8 wins.
Someone as Black tell me what they'd do once I've moved to my queen to A8 and I'll tell you how I counter to force mate.
edit - just realised how dickish that sounds. I only mean that there's more than one move available to Black so there's more than one move available to white....

Then depending on black moving pawn at g7 or not
g3-f5
Or if pawn advanced to threaten f5, Queen to h8

Re: Chess puzzle
Yes but that assumes black has a brain, which clearly he hasn't getting his king stranded like that on the middle.
