Shopping Habits ....

Has anyone made any changes to their purchasing habits in terms of looking at the Country of origin ? I was talking to the " Wines and Spirits " guy at a local Supermarket .... his section for French wine has halved in size over the last year, due to lack of demand whilst the " New World " and South American wine sales have increased substantially. I must admit I've made a conscious effort to buy British produce whenever possible, ditching Brittany Butter and French Brie for Cornish Butter and Somerset Brie for example ...
I don't want this to be classed as " Political " ... so let's not go there, people !

Not really changed any habits, but I do think there's more than a small amount of irony in the fact that we're all spending a fortune on face coverings which are almost exclusively made in China......

Sports Direct opened in Galway a couple of weeks back so went for a look .
Now Mrs Tribes saw some cycling gloves for £15 ( no euro price on them ) took them to the til and they wanted €22 . Now she made a fuss and got the man in charge over and he gave her the price on the label .
So what they were doing is giving you a rate of 47% mark up to the euro when it's 14% today .
Last time we will be there for sure .

Nope, but I'm not much of a foodie expert, nor wine drinker.
I suspect there will be a gradual change and a broader range though in where the UK gets its products now we have better flexibility for trading.

Definitely not noticed any discernible difference in the local Majestic. They do a smashing Primitivo called "Desire, Lush, & Zin" at a tenner on the mix six prices. Absolutely superb wine.

South African and Kiwi Sauvigon's mainly, and the odd G&T .... the boss is on Californian Rose !
Apparently, British sparkling wines have been regularly out-scoring the Champagne houses in " Blind " tasting competition, not something our French " friends and allies " are very pleased about ...

I think price changes on imported goods will have affected consumer spending more than anything.

You would be surprised how many of the French Champagne houses use wine grown in the south of England in their blended offerings (just enough so as not to lose their appellation - the terroir is very similar apparently

I doubt it's lack of demand. More likely to be the added bureaucracy regarding increased paperwork.

I try to buy local or British, however with anything other then food you struggle to find anything fully British.

Nyetimber sparkling wine from Sussex is absolutely superb if you're after an alternative to champagne.

Starts at about £32 a bottle .... Laithwaites certainly stock it !

I've no idea if the rules have changed recently, but a good friend explained a few years ago how stuff needed to have a 40%+ 'local cost input' to bear a 'Made in Scotland' badge; he worked for a very well known clothing brand - popular with golfers - which achieved this in their costs for individually packaging and embroidering their logo onto polo shirts which they sourced from eastern Europe, no doubt there was the cost of buying/fixing the 'Made in Scotland' label onto them too.

Iceland in Ireland have reduced much of their UK meat products.
Greggs had a freezer to themselves and Hollands and Pukka pies were available. All drastically smaller sections now.

Booths sell it, as do Majestic. It's usually on offer somewhere for £27ish a bottle.
