I take it the final will be on both channels, doubt ITV will attrach many viewers with this clichéd idiot commentating, dreadful last night, the wife was reading a book while the game was on last night, she turned to me late on in the game and said" Does that bellend never shut up"

It's not just what he says, he doesn't have the right voice for broadcasting. it doesn't have the right timbre or something.
He'd make a good 'vehicle reversing' voice though.

He dragged Lee Dixon down as well last night with his puerile "edge of your seats" style comments. You're there to describe the match Sam, not tell us how we're feeling.

It's got to be BBC for the match on Sunday, with a switch to ITV for the half time analysis from Gary Neville, who is streets ahead of Shearer, who, in turn, is streets ahead of Rio.

25.8m peak viewers last night, took the game into the top ten of all time in numbers. Only 2 sporting events bigger and one was the 66 cup final.

Somebody must like him out of that lot?

Definitely the beeb for me on Sunday. Commentators are all much of a muchness but I was screaming at Matterface more than the team last night! It’s no wonder Clive Tyldesley is really peed off.

This is spot on. Watch the game on BBC and the analysis on ITV. Nobody needs the smug arrogance of Lineker et all.

Perhaps his worst, but that's open to debate, was his utterance of 'here he comes' as Grealish waited to join the game.

Sam Shutyerface …… absolutely horrendous. Never shut up for a moment , never desisted from shouting one pre-rehearsed cliche after another. Genuinely awful.
Of many crass utterances I think “The next 30 minutes could change your life” at the beginning of extra time was the worst. Although saying “Who Cares ?” when the penalty was revealed as highly dubious was also pretty lowest-common-denominator patriotic dog-whistle stuff.

His commentary last night was the worst I've heard since I first watched football on TV in 1966. Constantly looking for a soundbite to be remembered by whilst coming across like Alan Partridge.

He genuinely referred to Denmark going a man down to injury in extra time as losing a member of staff. He didn't tell us who the player was and I thought he was on about their coaching staff.

RIP ITV's viewing figures on Sunday. Deserved, for hiring this idiot.

That "The next 30 minutes could change your life" comment was in unbelievably bad taste considering the true horrors we've all had to endure over the past 18 months or so, when many families have really experienced life changing events.

Wasn't it Lee Dixon who uttered the "Who Cares" comment regarding the penalty?

Thankfully the pundits were able to offer a more balanced view, and boy was that penalty soft in the extreme.

BBC for me on Sunday, partly for the commentary, and also to avoid those annoying ads.

It took him a few minutes to return and explain, and even then he initially said “Denmark are down to 9 men”

It will be BBC for me on Sunday, although I may switch to ITV for the analysis from Keane & Neville

On the same theme, back in the 1980s they once showed two clips of the same Wimbledon tennis rally, one from the USA coverage and one from the BBC.
The USA one went along the lines of the commentator yelling:
"POWERFUL SERVICE RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE - BACKHAND RETURN DEEP TO THE FOREHAND - TOPSPIN FOREHAND DOWN THE LINE - POWERFUL DEEP RETURN - WHAT A WINNER!!!!! THAT WAS AN INCREDIBLE SHOT!!!!"
They then played the same clip with BBC commentary which consisted of complete silence until the winning stroke which was followed by a trademark appreciative "mmmmmmmmm" from Dan Maskell.

Also, I'm pleased there's been mention of the "Denmark are a member of staff down" comment from that pillock last night, at the time I was expecting the camera to pan to the kit man being treated after getting a ball full in the face or something, I didn't for one moment think he was actually referring to a player!

In the second half he said England have dominated Denmark in this game which made me think which game he was watching.

Regarding commentators, I think we have all been spoiled with the great Barry Davies who for me is the best commentator of all time.

“That won’t be the first time tonight that happens, Grealish was the most fouled player in the Orem last season”

Well, considering he’s just come on ….. yes - it will be the first time it happens

Sure he described Pickford as making a save as “he fingered the ball well” too at one point

I don't normally dislike him as much as I did yesterday with his jingoistic claptrap.

Yes, a fair few of the people that he was spouting off to were English lads/ladettes (at least, I assume that was who it was aimed at), but I imagine that most of the viewing public were a bit higher on the iq scale than he was pitching at (see above) and some of his viewers wanted Denmark to win. They must hold the locus for being able to complain first, I would have thought.

As for the "member of staff down" bit, I assumed that he had meant that one of them had "done a Grealish/kane/sterling" and flung themselves to the floor and was looking for the body on the pitch. Not the brightest bit of commentary given the Eriksen episode earlier. It also seemed a bit unlikely given that of the final four, Denmark appear to be the only team that didn't have the "I was touched on my thigh so went down" attitude that clearly came across from Sterling afterwards and is ruining the game. Please Harry Kane, don't stay at Tottenham. Don't go to Manchester. Just **** off abroad with your constant falling over - and take your cheating mates with you. I'm voting Chexit (sorry Ashley).

Probably come across better once his voice breaks and it doesn't sound like he is about to lose the ability to say anything after 4 or 5 consecutive words.

Just a concern it hasn't yet broke aged over 40

I think that’s exactly the problem.
When on the radio, you need the commentary to be continue so you get a picture of what is happening

With TV (without stating the obvious) you don’t need that

I'd take Matterface's commentary way before that of Jonathan Pearce.

Thought Tyldesley should have had it. Enjoyed the old skool nature of him and McCoist this tournament (albeit more appropriate to have an English co commentator)

Some more Matterface soundbites that ticked me off -

A Grealish pass to Rice that made a different run than what Grealish expected

'...and that pass from Grealish is a bit behind him' - no just a miss communication/chemistry between the players

Then Mount when he tried to put a cross in that ended up a bit of a mis kick that Schmeichel had to tip over the bar -

'Mount tries to chip him there' - no, just a mis hit.

'Anderson very good last season' - there's me thinking he played CB for a team that got relegated by conceding for fun

Then the classic 'Chelsea & Brentford West London rivalry' comment that was a real head scratcher....

...Finally not to mention the harping on about 'grab somene close, remember where you are on this night' b******s

Possibly the worst commentary of a game of football if not of all time, that I have heard
