Sad news, a good man taken too soon. A fine player. He was a good cricketer as well, playing at Chorley late 60's early 70's. RIP Paul

Bolton born but yes he played for Chorley between 71-73. We used to watch a lot of non-league back then his initial move to Plymouth was a big story locally. I might well have seen him play for Chorley but I can’t honestly remember all these years later.

Saw Paul play for Chorley as a 16 yr old against Burscough our village side.Shortly after he moved to Ipswich
I always wondered why local league sides didnt snap him up.Good header maybe this caused his cancer.

This is a shock. He always used to park on my mum's street for Burnley games when he was on Radio Lancs and I had many a chat with him. Really nice bloke but also a damn good striker for Ipswich & England.

I was fortunate enough to live in Ipswich for most of the eighties when they had a fabulous team.
I saw all the home legs of their UEFA Cup win in 1981 and saw Mariner score in the final. I also saw them whip Man United 6 - 0 when Mariner scored a hat trick. Ipswich even missed two penalties Martin Buchan was Man Utd captain for this rout.

Only a year older than me, seems unreal that he has passed on.

Awful news. A good player in his day, certainly with his head. Agree a good pundit on RL too. My condolences to all his family and friends.

RIP Paul Mariner
In my head I still see your lovely smiling face and hear your warm sense of humour when you were interviewed and on the radio.
Just looked up your England record and had forgotten how good you were at scoring for your country as well.

Saw him play a lot for Ipswich in the 79-81 period. First class centre forward in a great side, and a great partnership with Alan Brazil. Very sad news. Always seemed like a good guy.

Really shocked. That ipswich side with John Work, Gates, Brazil, Arnold Murhan, Butcher, Cooper etc built by the young Bobby Robson was A hell of a team with Mariner partnering Work upfront they were unlucky being a small town team that they did not win more before outside money forced the teams breakup.
RIP Paul, always came across as a real gentleman.

When Ipswich played us in the cup with that great team they trained in Queens Park opposite St Theodore’s. Not much work done in class that day.

That would have been the 1977/78 League Cup. Could you imagine a team training in a local park like that now?

Cooper
Mills
Burley
Butcher
Osman
Muhren
Thijssen
Gates
Wark
Brazil
Mariner
Cracking side. RIP Paul Mariner

When you look at that list of players plus the likes of Kevin Beattie, shows how good a job Bobby Robson did at Ipswich.

And I was just about to add "and Kevin Beattie coming through". (Plus don't forget David Johnson who went on to be hero at Anfield like Wark)
