Dug out my World Cup Mexico 1970 Esso Coin sets (got 2 of them) this week... my Dad used to call in a garage to fill his lorry with Deisel on the A74 on his weekly trips to Glasgow. The chap in the cabin always gave Dad a handful of coins in their envelopes... instead of the regulation number 😂

I do vaguely remember the 1970 WC quarter final as a 10 year old at the time but don't remember any of the 'noise' around it or beinng that caught up in it.

I think the 3 that stand out to me as the most exciting ones since and ones that gripped the nation most (before today obviously) are the Italia 90 WC and Euro 1996 semi finals and the 2018 WC quarter final v Sweden (more so than the semi v Croatia strangely enough).

The 1970 World Cup has many memories for me. Brazil v England being the very first time I had seen a colour broadcast on a TV (we watched it up the Prairie at an Army show). The great Banks save from Pele, a shot from Rivelino that defeated the cameraman with its speed and of course the Bobby Moore tackle on the great man Pele. The heartbreak of losing to Germany as that little dynamo Gerd Muller added to his phenomenal goal tally.

Arguably the best ever Brazil side coasting to their 3rd final victory to claim the Jules Rimet trophy outright.

They were a fantastic side but they only beat us because Tostao got away with an elbow in the buildup to their goal and Jeff Astle fluffed the equaliser. What a final that might have made if we hadn’t thrown away the 2 goal lead.

The Brazil 1970 team were probably the best team I've ever seen. The forward line of Jairzinho, Gerson, Tostao, Pele, and Rivelino were a joy to watch. Worthy winners of the competition. England's failure in the quarter -final is still difficult to fathom out. Coasting at 2-0 but a change in personnel on the pitch just allowed West Germany the freedom to play and players that had been anonymous for them so far(wingers Grabowski and Lohr) ran riot.

Yes the 1970 World Cup was probably the best of Brazil as a team. The way they destroyed Italy was an absolute joy to watch.

As far as England throwing away a two goal lead, it is generally accepted that Sir Alf made a tactical error in taking Bobby Charlton off in order to rest him for the next game as we were coasting 2-0 at the time. This lead to the young Frans Beckanbaeur being freed up from his man marking duties on Charlton and push up and dictate the game.

C’mon England.

It was 2 1 when Bobby Charlton was substituted. We had a stonewall penalty not given that would have sealed the game.

Once they took off Bobby Charlton Vs Germany it was all downhill, I remember it very well.
Brazil had a fantastic team and were worthy winners.
