I think as you get older you get accustomed to England failing the hurt dosent bother you anymore,20 minutes after the penalty shoot out,I'd forgotten all about the game and moved on,maybe it's for the best,the fallout from this game isn't great is it?

The most recent was being knocked out the cup by Bournemouth. I don’t know why Dyche bothers with cup competitions… he shouldn’t enter them if he doesn’t fancy us to go far in them.

It might not bother you , but it still bothers me , anyhow this thread isn’t about the fall out from Sundays game which has been discussed on numerous other threads .

Hillsborough 74 for me also. We had had such a good season up to that point. Gutted at the end and thought about what could have been for ages after.

Being Knocked out of the League cup Semi final replay at the Hawthorns 68/ 69 by 3rd Division Swindon Town. Arsenal at Wembley was the prize When That competition really Mattered.Wembley then was such a special place. 20 years Later we Got there in the Sherpa van final as a 4th Division team.It would have been devastating to Lose at Deepdale.....but no shame losing to Wolves in the final. We'd got there!!

Newcastle, Swindon and Eintracht for me, others have come close but these three still bring back some memories

It's funny but games like the Spurs League Cup semi-final and the Euro 96 semi-final were disappointing for me but not devastating because , as I left the ground at the end of both games, I knew I'd witnessed a very special game of football and both the Clarets and England had done absolutely everything they could have.
The FA Cup semi v Newcastle was a heartbreaker, however. We were the better side and there's no way on earth we should have lost it. We wouldn't have surrendered to Liverpool in the final either.

Can think of 3 .
Burnley , losing to Newcastle in the semi final as i was convinced we were going to Wembley .
Galway United , losing at home in the FAI cup semi final to Finn Harps , was like a drowned rat in the open end around 20 years ago got back into town as saw the Harps fans singing that they were off to Lansdowne for the final .
Ireland , there has been many but getting beat by France 2009 in Paris when Henry handballed it in the play off for the World Cup still hurts more than any other .

Bolton in Jan or Feb 2010 wasn't much fun, but that cup semi final against Spurs was a great night - hell we were already out before kick-off!

Hillsborough and Spurs were the worst… but an honourable mention for Rovers under Laws, Lincoln and Wimbledon

There's been more than a few, but Hillsborough was and still is by far the worst.

I remember as a kid being absolutely gutted by euro 96 and France 98 knockouts. Then as I was a bit older Brazil 2002, Portugal 2004 and 2008 and then finally Germany 2010. I watched all those on tv weirdly. After that I even when I attended games I had either become accustomed to it or just didn’t have the same level of disappointment at defeat.

Burnley wise there have been lots. Many silly games. The ones you expect to win. So while the heavy defeats against city or rovers were horrible. They weren’t the worse feeling.

It’s games like Lincoln at home late in the cup. Watford away when Stan doesn’t start Blake and little. Leicester at home when Taylor misses the penalty.

Out of all of them I’d have to say olympiakos at home to fail to get into Europe proper. Such a missed opportunity.

Luckily under Dyche the disappointments have been few and far between. But they’re the ones that have actually hurt most. Probably because the prize was so great.

A certain Peter Noble got the winner in that game and a few year's later signed for Burnley, 3rd division Swindon beat Arsenal in the final 3-1 but couldn't qualify for Europe Because back then it was only open to the top flight teams, the formation Swindon played in the final was 7-2-1 lol

I think we would of won the league Cup that year if we got to the final, Arsenal had 7 first team players out with flu or food poisoning

Driving the 450 mile round trip to turf moor to see us lose… again to Bolton 2-0 via a brace from England legend Michael Ricketts. We were so poor that day to add to it and I’d brought my brother along to get him into the clarets. It didn’t work.

5 -0 trouncing in the cup qf replay at Hillsbrough takes some beating. Never felt more like singing the blues…. I reckon we could have done Brighton in the semis at Highbury. You expect a close game when you draw the home game where we miss a pen and it should never go to the replay in the first place. Very embarrassing that night and in the Leppings lane end that would have the tragedy 6 years later

The stand out one for me has to be losing 5-0 to Blackburn. Non stop goading from them lot down the road.
I was angry, embarrassed, certainly questioned my love for the Clarets.

I got talking to a footballing man (neutral) back in the pub after the game, who explained Burnley gave it the best but their was a huge gap in talent between the sides.
He was right, I watched some of the game back the day after and the lads had run themselves silly trying to compete. Shirts full of sweat.

I forgave them.

But boy has it made every victory over them since taste so sweet.

Burnley vs. bottom of the table Darlington, who hadn't won away all year and who would eventually be relegated. The club brought my entire school to the game after graciously giving us four training sessions at the club and we lost 1-0. I was the lone Burnley fan and never heard the end of it.

Of course, it was April 15th 1989, so things got a lot worse when we heard the news after the final whistle.

The first two posts on this thread answer it for me, the semi in 1974 and Crewe in 1987 and I will never feel like that again. That was the night I thought my club had gone. My mate's dad was on the coach that night and he was so worried about me that he phoned the following day to see if I was OK. I can't actually recall anyone speaking on that coach on the way home,

And from an era where despondency, despair and depression went hand in hand with a Burnley fan's lot, nothing comes close to the feeling i had walking out of Gresty Road on that Bank Holiday Monday back in May 1987. I really did think that was it for our club. I think there were 5 of us went in the car and barely a word was spoken on the drive home.

Those are the ones. 450 miles round trip to lose away is much better than doing it for a home match.

Internationalwise, getting knocked out of the World Cup by that Joe Jordan handball. It probably hurts more when you are small. And later on, losing the play-off with Ireland after Joe Allen had been kicked off the pitch.

Spurs semi-final we could well have beaten Man Utd in that final had we progressed.

Coventry 2002 we won but mossed out on the play-offs by 1 (ONE) goal, and we'd looked like running away with the league at Xmas.

Numerous cup exits, notably Bournemouth & Lincoln both at the 5th round stage when a real cup run was on in both seasons.

As England have been mentioned losing to Iceland in ignominious fashion has to be up there.

As has been mentioned Crewe away in 87, it was like the end of the world and we faced oblivion,we were truly shocking and there was no way we would win against play off chasing Orient on Saturday;or so we thought.

Yep, right up there with the worst. Was it a Bank Holiday Monday ? I remember arriving at the ground to be in a huge number of Clarets trying to get in the ground and things went pear shaped from there. An exit gate was opened and everyone surged into the ground, avoiding the admission fee which was being levied and the poor old aged stewards were left with only an empty velvet bag for their gate gains.

Given our league status it was the most half-hearted performance ever. There was disruption on the ground with Burnley fans trying to get out. Others had to brave things and many resorted to self harming using a ton of steelwork behind the goals.

That was the lowest. The performance at Watford in the FA Cup was getting there.
