I love how events like this throw up great stories, has anyway on here heard of Nicholas Poppleton?, nope! me neither until today, he's qualified for The Open while still working as a delivery driver for Iceland, what a couple of days he'll hopefully enjoy, and you never know he might even make the cut and be playing over the weekend.

With 65 golf courses and a population of 321,000 they have more courses per capitia in Iceland than any other country.

Hope it blows a gail Saturday and Sunday.
That's when links golf really needs skill.

I've got a few quid each way on Fitzpatrick and Fleetwood. Tommy made a promising start yesterday, thought 45s was good value.

I wanted to have a bet on Rory missing the cut but talked myself out of it thinking he can't walk round like a smacked arse this week, I may come to regret this in a few hours

Rory peaked about seven years ago,the long downward spiral is well advanced, you have missed a trick not having that bet, what were the odds?claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 10:58 amI wanted to have a bet on Rory missing the cut but talked myself out of it thinking he can't walk round like a smacked arse this week, I may come to regret this in a few hours

BBC Radio and Sky are blanket covering Rory in their coverage ..... it's a flippin' joke, he's miles off the lead and there are top ten players that we've barely seen a shot from in two rounds ...

Re: The Open
Collin Morikawa is the man to catch, but he's got plenty of company alongside him.
It looks like DeChambeau is heading home early, but apparently it's the fault of his clubs. What's the phrase that springs to mind, ah! yes a bad workman always blames his tools.
Tyrrell Hatton is no better snapping your wedge isn't going to help you mate, why is there so many angry golfers these days?
Andy Sullivan the best of the Brits just 3 off the lead, he could be one to keep an eye on this weekend.
Rory might just sneak in with that birdie on 18, but I don't offer much hope for his prospects of troubling the top of the leaderboard.

Re: The Open
Straight shootout between Oosthuizen & Spieth tomorrow? or will one of the chasing pack mount a challenge.
We could do with the wind whipping up in the final round, for a major they've found it relatively easy to post low numbers.
And the British challenge has been poor, Casey is the best placed home player, and he's only at -5,way off the pace.

Faldo called it the English Open and he was happy English players were doing well in the English Open...I don't think he had a clue what he was on about, but to be fair neither did I.tiger76 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 17, 2021 6:45 pmStraight shootout between Oosthuizen & Spieth tomorrow? or will one of the chasing pack mount a challenge.

Re: The Open
Costly errors from Spieth in the closing holes, you can't afford to miss tiddlers like he did if you're going to lift the Claret Jug.
Set up for a cracking final round with several players still in contention, I hate it when somebody runs away with it, we need the drama of the back 9 on the Sunday.

Re: The Open
People were saying that about Faldo in his pomp, like they always have about successful British sportsmen - it’s a very boring rhetoric.
He didn’t care. Nor did his fans. He’s still the greatest British Golfer of all time for me, and whilst McIlroy was tipped to knock him off that perch, he doesn’t look like catching, or moreover passing him, any time soon.

Re: The Open
Gutted when I missed a tiddler in the medal today, but makes me feel better when I see Spieth do the same.
Morikowa for me. Had the worst of the weather and would make history by winning two majors on debut. Just needs to keep his often ropey putting going. Louis at times looks like he did when I followed him around St Andrews in 2010, but he has nervy wobbles nowadays.

How Spieth must be ruing missing those 2 sitters last night now. Just shows you how important it is too nail your putts, particularly the gimmes.

Re: The Open
Morikawa seals the deal, and in his debut Open to boot, this lad is going to be one of the greats methinks.
Just a word for Robert MacIntyre, he finished joint 8th, so another top 10 major finish for him, and also the highest placed Brit in the field, he'll be one to watch over the next few years, I sense he'll be winning a major soon.
So those 2 dropped shots did cost Spieth big time in the end, he'll be tossing and turning tonight over what might have been.

Re: The Open
I'm not an expert on golf by any means, but it usually comes down to who putts best, I guess it's like a football match where one team dominates possession, but fails to convert their chances, tee to green there's probably very little to separate players of this calibre, so often it comes down to a missed outt here and there, or someone holing a 30/40 footer.Taffy on the wing wrote: ↑Sun Jul 18, 2021 6:44 pmAlso Rahm missed a ton of putts today.
