Re-branding of the club .

Post by davemanu2000 » Thu Jul 15, 2021 10:01 am

It is a fact that Burnley tried for this season to acquire some good players. Unfortunately some tried to avert Clarets for other shores to earn more money. I think with American rich owners ,Burnley can afford to buy some worthy players although they cannot compete in the transfer market against rich big city clubs .
I am of opinion that new players are reluctant to join Burnley for some dark obvious reasons . I believe that they think is a small club and located in some remote area not easily accessible .
It is strongly felt that the name and activities of the club strongly need re-branding .It cannot be acceptable that newly promoted clubs like Brighton , Norwich , Newcastle ,Brentford and some others are shown at a higher and brighter level.

The small club stuff is from our fans, I have no idea why our fans think we're this tiny nothing club. I guess it gives some kind of extra satisfaction to believe we're a League One club playing in the PL but it's simply not true.

In terms of the premier league finances/fan base we are a small club. That’s what the new owners want to change.

When you are comparing against the likes of Liverpool/Man United the landscape changes but I don't care how much money Brighton have, they are not a bigger club. We are held back with Burnley being a small town I suppose but I remember a few fans say we're a similar club to Barnsley. On what planet?

We've got numerous fans who're convinced that Palace, Watford, Brighton and others are bigger than us, but some of them are also convinced Newcastle are absolutely massive

But you need to remember for anyone under the age of 50 their experience of Burnley FC prior to us getting to the prem is that we are similar to Barnsley.

It'll be interesting to see how Brentford get on this season. With a new ground to pay for and to fill, their ticket prices must be the cheapest in London.

in what way? I think they've only played 1 year in the top flight in their entire history. 7 of the last 15 years in League One.

In that your opinions of clubs are formed by your experience of them, not the past (which you may or may not be aware of). There’ll be plenty of twenty somethings who don’t think much of the likes of Ipswich or Forest whereas I consider them big clubs because they were successful in my formative years.

Very true that. 'Big club' is of course meaningless anyway. Wage budget is the only thing that matters. If Brentford offer more money than Newcastle or Leeds, the player is going there regardless of some internet geeks idea of 'size'.

But yeah, in my head Burnley and Barnsley are pretty much the same club. Any stats about records before the 80s or income level this season leave me cold. That's just how it is.

Then which stats do you consider to make them pretty much the same club? A few poor years in the lower reaches has really tainted us that badly? but you're not counting the current PL run?

7 of their last 15 years in League One, 8 of our last 15 years in the PL.

They were big back then, but they most certainly aren't now.
Forest fell out of the PL in 1999, they've only managed 5 seasons in it and as we know with the way the media push it, it's the PL years that matter.
There is an entire generation of football fans who've only known Forest to be in the championship or League 1

Same with Ipswich who've also managed 5 PL seasons but they fell out in 02 and are now predominantly known for being championship and recently league 1.

Clinging on to something a club did 40yrs ago doesn't make them a big club now, they had a little purple patch where they won some big trophies and then faded away just as quick.

Which is exactly my point. There’s generations of fans who grew up with Burnley a bottom two division club which is why we’re still seen as a small club punching above our weight. If we stay in the Premier League longer then it will be a different story for anyone (currently) under 14/15 years old.

Brentford have sold their new ground and lease it along with London Irish Rufc for a peppercorn rent
Meanwhile the property developers who own the ground are building loads of flats surrounding the ground to make a vast profit quickly

Nominate this as the greatest segue I’ve ever seen on this board.

Fully agreed about the chicken kievs.

Apparently there are quite a few people from foreign countries with no knowledge of the area, that think Burnley is a city, presumably based on its Premier League status.

We will always be a small town club

But we will never be a small club, there is a difference.

And for the record, in the prem we are bigger than Brighton, Watford, Palace, Norwich, Southampton and Brentford purely because of achievements and history

Great to see you posting again Dave...it seems to have been quite a while since you posted anything.
Signing players seems so complicated these days and agents are, in my opinion, the cause of this. I'm sure other players will be signed but we've seen before deals collapsing at the last minute.

You never forget your roots, but that doesn't mean you have to also forget our present status. Its about time we lifted expectations a bit more as fans, since we have proved we deserve to be in this league.

Burnley are the only town represented in the Premier League. Every other club is in a City.

Whilst we've plenty of history which rightly increases the clubs status, dining at the top table seemed so unlikely for so many years and having established ourselves there is a case of punching about our weight somewhat.

I love the fact we continue to surpass all external expectations though. The bookies underestimate us every season which makes me a small fortune for a start.

Let them continue perceiving us as minnows. It makes for great entertainment. Even our new owners were talking about marketing us as everyone's favourite underdogs. There's mileage in that and we should embrace it rather than let it irk us.

From a business point of view, good.
We've been lagging behind for a long while now, it was obvious some people were either comfortable or out of their depth.

They don't underestimate us, nor do they continue to perceive us as minnows. A crazy fact to make up, almost like the made up fact we were favourites for relegation from the Championship in our first promotion season. Simply not true

I'm not sure what people get out of downplaying our club and making up facts, maybe it makes winning feel better if fans convince themselves we're a tinpot club who everyone deems minnows.

We are 6th favourites to be relegated btw

Back Burnley even stakes to win every game. It returns very steady profit season in season out. Was only a few years ago I'd paid for a full seasons bets after our first game. That's because we're underestimated by various sources that strongly influence those markets. I see it as a positive thing. From your comments you appear to percieve that reality as me downplaying the club. Not one bit. I'm embracing the fact that others downplay us as I see it as being to our distinct advantage.

Each to their own regardless though old chap.

I think that’s possibly down to the way the world defines what a city is. In the USA it’s a place that’s incorporated, has its own local council with powers passed on by the state I think, so could be a place with 20,000 people? In other countries they class it by population size, so maybe 50,000 inhabitants defines it.

By both definitions we are a city, but in the UK it’s different, and granted by the Queen/monarch, though I appreciate it might not be that simple.
