A replay used to be part of the essence of the FA Cup. This is a shallow compromise.

The FA Cup has been dead for me since they started playing the semi finals at Wembley.

Welcome to the forum PadihamThickNeck always nice to see newbies joining the mad house.

Yes the semi finals at Wembley definitely ruins a tradition, and devalues the tournament.

For me the FA Cup died the moment Man Utd were granted exemption for the 1999–2000 competition, due to them competing in the FIFA Club World Championship in South America, to take place in early 2000, thus becoming the first FA Cup winners not to defend their title.

It was an even greater snub to the FA and the competition as they were the holders at the time, and I genuinely don't feel the cup has ever recovered it's magic since that event.

Exactly... The competition died years ago and I struggle to find little enthusiasm for it as it hinders our Premier league campaign.

I was annoyed when the idiots on hear got on Dyches back after the Bournemouth exit, they obviously couldn't see the bigger picture...

Premier league survival

One of a number of things that have destroyed it as a competition.

So it's dead is it? So will it still be dead if we reach the final.

Well put it this way it won't be as special as it would of been if we got to the final when we got to the quarters under Stan.

The main thing about getting to the final was being able to play at Wembley. Not to have played there the round before.

The FA cup final used to be a massive day. Pubs packed. 3pm kick off. Nowadays nobody is bothered and the kick off times are awful for fans.

Good question I'm sure all those on here who dismiss it as a distraction won't expect tickets should we reach the final one year.

The reality is we're never going to win the PL, but we just might with a fair wind have a stab at the FA Cup, you only need to win 6 matches to lift the trophy, and that's not beyond our capability is it.

I get that we put PL safety first and foremost, but the odds are we will drop back down to the Championship at some point, so why not give the cups a real go and try and win something well we've got our best chance of silverware.

If we're just going to face battling relegation year on year where's the excitement coming from?

Remember the excitement our 'capital punishment' run generated throughout the whole town, and there's no reason why we can't repeat that feat again.

Once of a day England matches and The FA cup final was in the main the only live football, wall to wall tv football has killed it as a spectacle, but that's progress.

The cup is the best football competition in the world.

But some of the magic has been taken away

I’m not keen on swapping venues to suit minnows, semi finals at Wembley, weakened teams and Sean Dyche after what was a famous cup run that gave him recognition as a mediocre Football League player and I think it’s sad that he disregards it as a manager.

As most of the lower league clubs are knocked out by the 5th round it makes sense

That’s one reason but we’ve also got removal of replays, semis at Wembley, finishing fourth in the league considered more important.

It’s still a brilliant competition for lesser clubs who go on a run, such as Chorley last season who made it to the 4th round, and it is for the teams who get to the final.

Where once the cup attracted bigger crowds than league games we now have to reduce prices to get people in.

The day we are knocked out each year is always a bad one for me but it’s no longer a big, important competition.

I still think it's a great competition, does my head in when we don't even try to progress.

Partly that but so many other factors. Winning the cup was bigger than winning the league back in the day. It attracted huge crowds and cup final day was one of the special days in the footballing year, So many things have damaged it over the years it really isn't possible to pin it down to one thing.

I know it's not just one thing but if you won 200m and a champions league spot it would go back to being the most important competition.

Growing up in the 80s I could tell you everyone single winner of the FA cup of that decade, and barely any league winner.
Then the Premier league money came.

From the moment that 3rd round draw was made on a Monday lunchtime around 12. 20 and broadcast live on the radio from the headquarters of the FA, the FA Cup seemed to dominate the game in the second half of the season. Excitement and interest grew as the rounds progressed especially if there was a 'giant killer' still left in the competition. Semi finals on neutral grounds meant large numbers of supporters could travel relatively easily and cheaply to see their team and as many of us still remember it didn't always end well for everybody. Strangely enough the final was often an anti-climax but it never stopped me watching the build up, then the match along with my family from the comfort of our front room. When the game was over, that was it for football for three months( except for the annual home internationals which covered about 7 days). The close season really was closed but just served to whet the appetite for the following season.

I agree we treat both domestic cups with disdain, and it'll be interesting whether this approach changes under the new owners.

I'd have thought they'd want to make their mark, and what better way than by overseeing a real cup run, and possibly even seeing Ben Mee lifting the trophy come May.

SD has worked wonders for our club, however the one problem I have with him is his reluctance to really have a go at the cups, if he could mastermind a cup win he really would go down as a legend in BFC history.
