Anyone watching the inaugural game tonight? I may have said it before but they needed to carve up the country into regions and name them accordingly. Manchester Originals does not make me feel represented. Looks like a good leg-up for the women's game but it doesn't feel sufficiently different from T20 as a format.

We stood and watched while other countries set up such as the IPL (India) and the Big Bash (Australia).

I don’t know why we needed to mess about though - should have kept it at t20.

I said this on a different thread, they need to copy the IPL and make it inclusive for worldwide companies to invest and buy franchise spots. T20 cricket is entertaining, the viewing numbers on the IPL prove there's a big worldwide audience, the World Cup England won was great entertainment. Worldwide TV deals, worldwide best players and worldwide businessmen buying teams. The IPL lacks alot of the best t20 players in the world.

The jury's still out here. The varifocals are struggling with the way the stats are displayed around the screen although I have had 3 glasses of wine. Mr M says it's a bit glitzy and has gone to water the garden. Not sure about the turn at half time although the younger spectators seemed to be enjoying it. We do like watching T20 though.

Intrigued to see how it plays out, hopefully it can engage a younger generation. Will be interesting to see how teams take it on and what ends up becoming a par score etc. Excellent bowling from Kate Cross so far.

Do you remember when t20 started and they micd up players and interviewed them about tactics during the game?

They also had player profiles such as: favourite band, nickname; takeaway meal of choice etc. It is certainly taken far more seriously.

The Hundred, for me, is two things:

Too close to t20, so not necessary

And….franchised, which as a Lancashire supporter, I really do not like.

Amazing to see how the game has evolved since then.

I hope the girls 100 takes off as with the equal pay it's a chance for them to go full time and will improve massively.

I can't see the mens game taking off though as it's like watching cricket on the waltzers. I haven't a clue what's going on.

You can try to enjoy the cricket. I agree in a lot of areas of it but if it gets a different generation involved that can only be a good thing. No team to support, no rivalries I’m assuming you don’t watch the IPL etc then?

Lots of posts of a very negative nature about The Hundred. Well, here's a thing.... It's not really aimed at us. My two 10 year old daughters are fascinated by it, and The Hundred makes sense to them. None of the complex terms, etc. The loss of which has helped opened the sport up to them. My daughters are the next generation - and this is proving a great introduction for them. When books like The Da Vinci Code are written, or when Harry Potter films are released, they're not aimed at the litterati nor the film connoisseurs, they're almost like a gateway drug - so think of the Hundred like that; it creates an initial introduction to the game that will make them appreciate Test cricket and other formats in the future. Remember, this isn't replacing Tests or ODIs, nor even T20s, it's just a different format that is creating intrigue and interest. Just because we don't like it, and just because we feel it's the devil in disguise, it doesn't mean it's wrong or bad. The exclusivity, the words and terms we like to use which make us appear superior to others who don't understand the complexities of our game, are all things we may love, but they're also things that often stop others wanting to get involved. At the very least, give it a chance - it's cricket, but not as we know it, but it might be the cricket that safeguards the sport in the long term.

Yup: this for me too. I just can’t imagine supporting the same team as Bodgefords and MD….I feel filthy just thinking it.

Correct. I watch Lancashire, England and if I’m home and get chance Burnley. I’ll watch world cups. Broadly, I’ve zero interest in any franchised sport. T20 had full houses often and had significant numbers of youngsters attending. An innovative rights deal and it would have been perfect.

Remember these franchises are parasites, don’t have their own grounds, no academies, no community function, no player pathways…… the game doesn’t survive on parasites.

It’s marginalised T20, sky have barely covered it this year, games played at inopportune times. Almost like they want it to fail. Odi’s are now development games only. Lower class games. From word champs to playing no odi cricket in the counties at a good level in 2 years. And the argument is it’s not doing away with odi cricket? And the championship has no rhythm, it’s now fit around this 100
Nonsense? I’m sure the kids will love it when this parasitic form of the game stunts development at the opportunity to find franchise owners. Brilliant.

Gambling your established core support on a new support is a constantly failed strategy for long term growth in sports isn’t it?

With respect, we’re not heavily invested in the IPL like many of us have been growing up, watching our county. I do watch the IPL and I support Chennai Super Kings every season. They were my choice and I stick with that.

Here it’s Lancashire and only Lancashire.

Football is starting a new competition next year with 6 players each from Burnley, Blackburn and Preston forming an 18 man squad for a ten match competition.

The franchised side will be named East Lancashire Spitfires

A new generation of fans are expected to really get behind the event.

Will you be rocking up in your Burnley scarf to support the ELS throughout the competition?

I'm glad your 10yr old daughters loved it (twins?). Get them down to your local cricket club and signed up to all-stars or similar.

Watched about 10 minutes near the end, probably some of the worst fielding I have seen in the professional game. Straight forward catches dropped and throws a large distance from the stumps.

With this competition being shown on free to air as well as sky, I envisage a big uptake in interest in the sport by the younger element. Hopefully the local clubs will be able to offer the facilities to progress it. A big couple of months until the end of the season. Good luck to all.

Yes, but there’s plenty of Burnley fans not born in Burnley and Lancashire play most of their cricket in Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

I imagine the men’s will be an entertaining (it’s a sell out) yet plastic occasion as it’s hot sunny ,well publicised etc . It reminds me vaguely of those gawd awful Sat night tv shows like “ ninja warrior “ etc Perhaps Ant n Dec could compere it and Simon Cowell could be 3rd umpire ?

Felt bit sorry for the women as it did highlight how poor they are at fielding ( not unlike the female keepers, just somat missing )

That said if it gets kids to the local cricket clubs it’s a good thing as teens numbers have been horribly low last 2 seasons

That's all very well but what happens when these people turn up at their local club and see cricket being played to normal rules?

Does nothing for developing batting skills though. The aim of this form of cricket is to try and smash every ball out of the ground.

I understand each of the Counties will benefit to the tune of around £1.3m from this form of Cricket . Hardly a parasitic relationship. Incidentally , I can't stand this or T20.

I have reservations about this new format, what exactly was wrong with revamping the T20 if they wanted to appeal to the younger demographic.

And it's the name changes I hate the most, yet more Americanisation slowly creeping into our sports. there's a reason CC has survived for over 130 years, it's because supporters have deep roots with their specific county whoever that might be.

Now on the plus side this new product is enabling many primetime viewers access to cricket when they might not have otherwise been afforded that opportunity, and if this alone increases crowds and participation in the coming years that can only be a good thing I suppose, but yet again it feels like sport is being dumbed down to attract the masses, and the traditional fans are being further pushed down the pecking order.

I've felt for a few years now that test cricket certainly in it's current format wouldn't survive in the next decade, and this move just further aggravates those worries I'm afraid.
