More recommendations needed - now garden clearance

Post by ClaretTony » Fri Jul 23, 2021 3:51 pm

I've recently asked about decorators and blinds fitters (and thanks for the responses). Now it's the back garden.

I'm not looking for a gardener but someone who could clear the area. I've got a drive overrun with weeds and a buddleia blocking it. That leads to the back garden which is even worse with two trees having arrived among the overgrowth as can be seen below.

I'm looking for someone who will clear it all down. The intention is to put some artificial turf down in the back garden but it needs clearing first.

Does anyone know anyone in the Burnley area who does this sort of work?

It would be sad if you resorted to artificial turf. I see what looks like Lonicera Nitida in there, perhaps this:

https://www.burncoose.co.uk/site/plants.cfm?pl_id=2616

That's a nice shrub although can get quite large. I suspect there will be other goodies in there.

Really you choices are a skilled gardener who can renovate your garden or anyone who can hack the lot down.

To install artificial turf all those shrubs and trees will have to be removed with roots or killed and ground down. Not only that but if some of them are 'suckers' from trees in other gardens that could also prove a nuisance.

https://www.artificiallawn.co.uk/blog/h ... tallation/

Whilst this site waxes lyrical about artificial turf in fact it does require some maintenance. Leaves and other debris should be removed; seeds will land and germinate so some weed control is required. And frankly it usually looks completely unnatural.

Decide what you want your back garden for - to look at from your window; to sit in on nice days; perhaps even grow a few herbs for cooking. There is no 'no maintenance garden' (except ones that look like yours!). Think 'low maintenance'. A decent gardener could give you some suggestions.

For the front there is only one solution: weedkill the weeds and buddleia then in a few weeks cut down or strim off the dead material. Alternatively strim and cut everything down then weedkill what comes back when it's a suitable size for weedkilling. Buddliea will move paving if you have it. It's a nice shrub though known as the 'butterfly bush' as butterflies like it.

If you do consider additional plants for the back garden, such as climbers to hide walls, look at scented plants - if you have a sense of smell. There are some beautiful smelling plants and it's possible to have almost all year round scent.

I don't want any renovation - I want it all removing, simple as that. I'm asking if anyone knows of anyone who could do this for me.

My brother in law does gardening jobs mainly Tony, but I’ll have a word if you like. He’s profoundly deaf (as is my sister) so if by any chance you still have my dad’s number that’s best to ring. If you need the number just give me a nudge.

We need to help save the planet CT, please no artificial grass. Get a nice lawn put down when it’s all done and the local mobile Gardner will cut it for you ever week/ fortnight.

Used to be immaculate but it's too much of a struggle for me now and it's not one of those jobs you can just put to one side.

I bet even Charlie Dimmock and the Garden Rescue team wouldn’t fancy having a go at that.

Yes quiet understandable some need regular attention but leave it for a while and it begins to get unmanageable.

Probably a breeze to clear for someone who clears gardens regularly.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but would artificial grass do more harm to the planet over its lifetime than a lawn that requires fuel to be regularly mown?

I don't know about harm to the planet but a few pro's and cons about it.

It looks nice.
No cutting or weeding and seeding.
No mud

It gets very hot in summer
Attracts cats (it's warm)
Takes a while to dry out (it's effectively carpet)

If just looking at green house gas emissions, you could use an electric, battery, or even hand lawnmower (assuming electric is from a renewable source which at the moment seems unlikely).

The main factor about natural grass is, particularly if you don't use harsh chemicals, that it generates oxygen (using carbon dioxide), if healthy has a soil that has a range of flora and fauna (bacteria, fungi, amoeba, worms etc.). Whilst a monoculture (one species) isn't natural it's better then no species. You can also have non-grass lawns (such as moss, clover, sedum, wild flowers) although here the battle is keeping grass out.

Fair points. I don’t think artificial grass should be dismissed as an option though as there are many benefits, particularly for those who want a maintenance-free solution.

Agent Orange might do the trick. May not be a fully ecological/ethical solution though ;)

Bloody hell !!

Before anyone starts on that, make sure there are some Border Force agents looking out for refugees hiding in there, or Chilean miners

There might even be a whole team of wide right players who have just got lost :D
