Bobby Thomas seriously impressed me last season in the cup against Millwall, looked very assured tonight and to top it off is clearly a box threat due to his size.

I fail to see why we are apparently seeking another centre back when we have someone of his potential apparently behind even Kevin Long, personally. I have no doubt he’s a long way from being a starter in the Premier League but he looks a real prospect in my opinion.

McNeil again looking a cut above anything we have, and Gudmundsson again flattering to deceive. All the links are to right wingers and it’s no wonder, it’s a clear weakness in our team for me. JBG, when fit, is a useful squad member and would be a good bench option but we absolutely need to be finding a player to take his first 11 place before the window shuts. Reasonable squad if all fit and ready if we can get a winger or two, in my opinion - Richardson, Thomas and Gomez-Mancini all involved off the bench too this season I think?
Good summary, IMO.
Thomas looks a really good prospect.
I guess it was decided in advance that Collins would do all the defensive challenging in the first half

I bet he will be buzzing after that performance, keeping Dwight in check is no mean feat. He will be having tangerine dreams if he manages to get any sleep tonight.

Decent run about, but Darth Vader called it.

A couple of our youngsters did okay, but nothing to suggest we can draw on our youth squad to fill the large number of gaps we will have in the next couple of years if we stay up. We could be looking at replacing most of the squad in the next two seasons or giving most of them expensive new contracts to see them into their twilight years. We definitely don't have the cash to replace twelve or more players in that short space of time, even if we spread the payments and / or sell our best players. Not if we want to meet all our debt repayments as well.
This squad is only going downhill from here under ALK, they simply haven't got the resources to turn the tide on an ageing worsening squad. We need 2 or 3 added with the ability to start for us either immediately or 2 years down the line.

You're over egging it, I don't doubt we have some good prospects and I agree about Thomas but I see nothing to suggest they're good enough for a relegation battle in the Premier League. They may become good enough but Burnley U23's to first team PL football is a hell of a step up and a hell of a risk for us to take on them too.

I don’t want to agree, but I just can’t see it any other way.

With the number of players out of contract next season I really expected us to invest 4-5 1st team players this window.

A couple of the lads looked promising but I think expecting them to feature more than handful of games is unfair on them.

My summary off the game

- Thomas looks decent for us.

- Glennon was lucky not to see red, horror tackle friendly or not that's a bad one.

- Blackpool's trialist had a belting game, anybody know who he is ?

- Blackpool commentators very complimentary about Burnley and how we always get labeled with the long ball tag (They said we are much better than people give us credit for)

My thoughts:

1st half: we were awful, pumped it long down the left channel, missed countless opportunities to break lines with good runs from Richardson and McNeil. Which frustrated both of them.

Collins was out of position and Mee spent a long time pulling him around verbally. Lowton was lucky not to see red for a two footed stamp.

Cork looked okay, Brownhill looked okay. JRod isn’t good enough.

2nd: Thomas looked good, wanted the ball to play out with Tarks. Dominant in the air (against kids).

Barnes is not good enough. Harker is intelligent, pacy but needs time.

Westwood was good. JBergG is not good enough. Glennon was lost and that was a horror tackle.

Tarks was Tarks.

All in all, not far from the season beginning, I am very worried.

The trouble is, risking throwing a "green" youngster into a PL game is a gamble you can get away with, even if it doesn't work out brilliantly, as long as the player is out wide or playing as a striker or can be lost in midfield somewhere. Look at Mumbongo last season for example. We tried him several times and tbh, he didn't impress. Fine. BUT if you're trying those lads out in central defence or in goal, it could seriously cost us games and last year it did.

I have to disagree.
You can't afford to play anyone who's not up to it,
The thing is that some of our experienced players aren't really up to very much either.
Except Erik Pieters, he has great attitude and effort.

I agree with you. I think what I was trying to say was we don't always know who will step up and make it without actually giving them a try. Benson is one who has had a go and MAY have been found to be just below par, but finding that out didn't really cost us anything. Dunn clearly was below par hence his departure to the Championship and finding that out did cost us unfortunately.

With Benson off to Barnsley

We are currently starting the season with McNeil, Cork, Westwood, Brownhill, Gudmundsson as fit senior midfielders.

As soon as the transfer window opens you seem completely consumed by it. The transfer window closes in 35 (thirty five) days. Now it may be that when those 35 (thirty five) days have passed we haven’t added sufficiently to the squad, in which case I would be a little concerned. But even still I wouldn’t spend what seems to be every waking hour publicly fretting about it.

You seem like a decent person and I don’t like to make a personal dig, but you are very much the archetypal drama queen.

No, hang on there. How is saying that one combination at centre of defence looked better than the other deemed negative?
That is your interpretation.
one could look at it the other way and say that it is positive because the second paring looked good.

They looked the lesser of the two pairings in my opinion, owing to the fact that I thought Thomas and Tarkowski looked very good.

Funny how no one has mentioned how brilliant it was to be watching live football again with over a thousand fellow clarets in a very decent atmosphere. We were completely dominant for the first 30mins should have scored a hatful and look in a very strong place physically. Thomas, Richardson and Mancini all making big strides and Barnes looked much more at it. Only JBG is a bit of a worry but we look on course to be hyper competitive as always and this time only Pope as a serious fitness doubt. We need to add 2-3 to the squad but anyone who feels pessimistic after tonight must not have watched many preseason games. We’ve played plenty worse than that over the years.

I really enjoyed last night. As claretbob wrote, we were completely dominant in the first 30 minutes and should have been at least three up.

Controlled the game in the second half and got the deserved winner and should have made the lead much more comfortable. Second game in, I expected a much closer game but was pleased with how we played for this point in preseason.
