Lost Morecambe and Wise Show a 'huge discovery'
A piece of TV history thought lost forever has been rediscovered in an attic https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england- ... s-57989461
It does make you wonder just how many other classic telly masterpieces are lurking in attics and garages gathering dust.

Yes it's on ITV at 9PM, but I presume for anybody that can't watch it live it'll be available on the ITV catch-up service for a while.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 8:55 pmThanks for the reminder - I'm really looking forward to this

Re: Lost Morecambe and Wise Show a 'huge discovery'
I wish they’d have showed us the episode from start to finish without having the hear the ‘celebrity fans’ comment all the way through. I’m not sure if they didn’t have confidence in the material or what but it seems like we didn’t see the full episode.
Re: Lost Morecambe and Wise Show a 'huge discovery'
I completely agree. What's the point of finding a new episode and then not showing it? We got more of Gary Morecambe than of Eric Morecambe.
Re: Lost Morecambe and Wise Show a 'huge discovery'
In May 1984 I went to the opening of a new Business venture in Luton by some fellow Businessmen. When I got there they had got Eric Morecambe to officially 'open' their business. It was common knowledge that he had health issues. I got talking to Eric and commented on how well he looked and he did look really good. He thanked me and said that he felt the best he had done for many years. And then about 2 weeks later Eric Morecambe died.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 9:06 pmJust had time to record it. Hard to believe now that it’s over 37 years since Eric died.

Completely agree. Very irritating. I'm not sure why they do this as it seems a well used concept - talking about something without actually showing all of it. I get the sense we viewers are just being treated as suckers in some way.
Fortunately I recorded it and after the first few minutes and a few fast forwards in the hope that these 'fans' would go away, it became clear they wouldn't so deleted it. Why could they not show the whole episode, with perhaps an introduction to explain where it fits in in the M&W history, then show the whole episode uncut, then if they insist on 'fans' commenting, do that afterwards. Overall it was probably not worth the effort and ITV knew it as M&W's material with a few exceptions has dated badly.
The same was done with the 1966 World Cup Final recently. I turned the sound off for that but they still had to reduce the screen to get the talking heads in.
Re: Lost Morecambe and Wise Show a 'huge discovery'
It was painful to watch Eddie Izzard forcing himself to laugh at what he thought were the correct moments. It was definitely humour of its time but there were still some laugh out loud moments for me.

Loved Motecambe and Wise and will watch this on catchup.
Was driving up to the Lake District in May 1984 on honeymoon when the news came on the radio that Eric had died.
I don't usually get upset at the death of a celebrity I've never met but it felt like I'd just heard my favorite Uncle had died

Spoiled it - I could understand his family being on, although not constantly, but the rest should not have been on.longsidetrumpet wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 8:50 amDone Celebrity Gogglebox style. Turned it off immediately
But why do I just cry laughing when the paper bag comes out?
I met him once in WH Smith's in Harpenden when I was doing some work down there but I also sat just behind the directors box at Luton in 1974/75 when we won 3-2. He came in and took his seat. That was fine but he then turned round, shifted his glasses to one side and I was helpless.
Maybe they were of their day but for me Morecambe & Wise will always be nothing other than brilliant.

I could recite every word of the 'Andre Previn sketch' but I still laugh like a drain when Eric grabs 'Mr Previews' lapels and delivers the classic line "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order"

I'm laughing just reading it - and I think Mr Preview enjoyed it. He was always happy to talk about it.Vintage Claret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 10:31 amSums up what I think CT.

I turned over the page and there was a cartoon of a theatre stage, lit up by lights .... there was a coffin on a stand, draped in the Union Jack with a pair of glasses on top. Underneath it simply said " Goodbye Sunshine ! "

Accidental Death Of An Anarchist as per Gavin Richards, Channel 4 1983.
I thought this brilliant, so did my wife. Probably the only thing we've ever agreed upon.
Would love to get hold of a version .

There was a cartoon with a similar theme in the paper I read..Clarets4me wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 10:51 amI was at University in Reading, picked up a paper and read the news ...

It showed a gravestone that read 'Eric Morecambe 1926-1984' with a huge pair of spectacles draped skew- wiff over it with the headline "Now who'll bring us the sunshine?"
Re: Lost Morecambe and Wise Show a 'huge discovery'
Last night they seemed to be implying that show was the first time Eric did the paper bag gag, but I remember trying to copy it as a kid, and I’m 67. I got the hang of it and went around doing it constantly at about 8 years old. There was another sketch around that time where they were providing backing to someone singing “Are You Lonesome Tonight”, the backing being “Bum, Ooh, Yattatatah” or am I imagining that?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 10:19 am

Morecambe & Wise were once asked what they would be if they weren’t comedians. “Mike and Bernie Winters” replied Eric. Brilliant

Just googled it. It was Eric singing “Are you lonesome tonight” with Ernie and 2 other blokes providing the “Bum ooh yattatah”Juan Tanamera wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 6:06 pmI can't remember the name of the song Chobulous, but it wasn't 'Are You Lonesome Tonight"

Pretty sure there are going to be a mini series of them. The talking head nonsense was for the most part fill, ITV are getting more bang for their buck.. as they say stateside. Why make one advertising goldmine when you can spin it out to three or four.
