His early stuff was brilliant, after Songs in the key of life.....he started to lose his coolness by doing collaboration's with Jackson & McCartney but I can well imagine seeing him 50 years ago he was around about at his best.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 12:54 pmI saw Stevie Wonder live about 50 years ago. So many great songs from Motown, still have lots of original albums and singles stored away. One my favourites is Diand Ross and the Supremes join the Temptations. One track in particular always sticks in my mind because it was so different to anything else they'd done.
The Impossible Dream. Here's a link, have listen. Not your typical Motown but superb.

Re: Tamla Motown ...
Songs in the key of life was around 77 I think....then the I just called to say & Happy Birthday to ya and Jackson & McCartney kicked in,he kinda lost his way then.
Re: Tamla Motown ...
like the music from the soul era, plus love blues, have TM but also a lot of other labels such as Atlantic/Stax, etc. Have some of the popular ones and managed to see quite a few great artists, my records however from that era tend to be a little different from the main stream artists mention.
Brook Benton, Percy Sledge (personal favorite) Jackie Wilson (my mothers favorite lol), Al Green, Chuck Wood, Eddie Parker, etc. with Tina Turner going all the way back to Ike & Tina Turner.
Type of songs I particularly like:
Going to a Happening
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANmy0BTKVtw
Going to a go go
Eddie Parker
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lSm7uf ... 92035E910E
Chuck Wood
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3ZRDeK ... 0E&index=3
So many other classic dance songs, I never considered the Jackson 5 or Michael Jackson as soul.

Re: Tamla Motown ...
Thanks, I appreciate that.
I saw Whitney Houston and Diana Ross within a week of each other, probably the same year as you. Whitney was faultless but it was almost like watching videos. Diana Ross was at the NEC in Birmingham and performed on a stage in the middle of the arena. Blown away sums it up. Unbelievable night with an absolute superstar. And when she went into the old Supremes medley the place erupted.

Just a bit of trivia - My Guy is reported as being the last of the Motown hits to feature an upright bass. It does sound "softer" to me than a bass guitar.tiger76 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 30, 2021 8:48 pmThis was one of my mother's favourite tracks, it got a lot of play whenever we had a party back in the day, and it also got an obvious BFC connection as well as being a great tune.
Martha Reeves & the Vandellas - Jimmy Mackhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obvSFWv ... &index=20
And this is a timeless classic by Mary Wells,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liT_YkqTSqQ I never realised she contracted TB at the tender age of 10, they had it tough in those days didn't they.
Good thread and a real anecdote to all the doom and gloom on the transfer threads.

Re: Tamla Motown ...
On very much a trivia level I'm sure that the single by Yvonne Fair, 'It Should Have Been Me' , was the very first one to reach No1 in the charts for Tamla Motown sung by a white artist. Not a favourite track of mine and certainly not atypical of Tamla but one for those( like me) that sometimes revel in trivia.

Re: Tamla Motown ...
The late Yvonne Fair was black. Pretty sure it was never No 1 as well. Mid 70s long after the death of the ‘Traditional’ Motown sound
Re: Tamla Motown ...
All good and true. Another way of appreciating the Motown sound is in the contributions by the in house band the Funk Bros, who are found on many TM hits. Earl Van Dyke the keyboards player did some instrumental stuff under his own name including the uplifting 6 by 6.

Re: Tamla Motown ...
I was brought up on Motown, living next to a youth club that played nothing else when I was about seven. I could hear the Supremes and Marvin Gaye in my bedroom every Tuesday and Thursday night. This developed into a love of the edgier and harder sound of soul. A natural progression from northern soul is jazz funk which I also grew to enjoy but I don’t think many diehard soulers really went for it because it didn’t fit the dancing which, to be fair, was what it was all about. This is one of favourites which moves beyond the traditional soul sound.

I saw a few TM stars when I was very young and I remember seeing a group over in Halifax, who were the "so called" Britain's answer to Ike & Tina Turner, so your post reminded me when you mentioned Yorkshire I also remember dancing all night into the morning sunshine when I left the place.Holmeclaret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 2:08 pmAnother Yorkshire lass who does brilliant Motown and Northern Soul covers.
