Blimey! what happened there then, this race is like watching The Cannonball Run(Google it kids if you don't know).

Hamilton has made more errors in this season then he has in the previous ten combined, bizarre that he didn't pit with the rest of the field.

We're all human I guess, fortunately for Lewis there's still plenty of time to repair the damage, and his Championship rival Max Verstappen isn't finding life any easier today either.

Just now and again F1 throws up races such as this, where the usual also-runs can get their moment in the sun, and it's great to see, the last thing anybody wants to witness is the big 2 strolling miles clear of the rest of the field, that soon grows tedious.

Hamilton gonna steal a win from the back of the field, it's looking like it. the guy is unreal.

It'd be some way to seal his 100th F1 win, but nothing should surprise us after the career Lewis has had.

Not so sure. Alonso defending well. Podium at best I’d say.

Well even a podium finish would be a decent outcome for him, as it stands Max isn't getting any points.

Pleased for Alpine/Ocon, AM/Vettel.

If Lewis loses this Championship though, he only has himself to blame, what with the brake magic error & forgetting to pit

Alonso was excellent. But so was Hamilton - team strategy let him down (it wasn't Hamilton's call not to pit like the others).

Don’t think they had radio on the opening lap but he could’ve pitted when he saw the track after. He said after he thought the team had information that it was going to rain again.

A sort of handicap system as they do in horse racing? it'll never happen as is the case with the PL, the big teams weld all the power and money.

Hamilton proved today why he's the best driver of his generation, he give the field a head start, and yet still came a strong 3rd.

Yeah that's the punishment.

It happened once about 10 years ago and has happened in f2 and 3 quite recently.

Normally they tell the drivers to pull over at the end of the pit lane if they're low, I've no idea why they didn't as they just have known it was marginal

Lewis would have won by a lap or more if his stupidity without radio hadn’t left him last . Good drive by LH but the Merc was 1.5 a sec quicker than every other car . Probs the most longevity of a dominant car ever in F1, quite remarkable

Given how dry it looked, you would have thought, but presumably they were giving Lewis the opportunity to assess the whole track.

Lewis said after that he had been told more rain was due. Seems like a big communication cock up.

Incidentally, had he not gone around, would there have been a start (red lights, green) with all the cars in the pits changing tyres?!?!?

It was bizarre wasn’t it, seeing just one car line up on the grid. I’m no F1 expert but I gathered that all of the other teams had made the decision before the restart for their drivers to pit? And if this wasn’t the case then it would have been a bold move for Hamilton to have been the first to have peeled off into the pit and potentially forfeit his lead.

I don’t think you need to know much about F1 to know that was bizarre

They said to Verstappen before the restart that he could come straight in to change tyres if he thought the track was dry enough, so I’m assuming they left it to the drivers to decide.

The commentary seemed to suggest the drivers could have changed them under the red flag as well, in which case I’m not sure why more didn’t take that risk, especially Max. Odd all round.

I’m also not sure if the pit stops were able to take place while Lewis was waiting for the lights (I.e. before the race restarted). They seemed to, which must be an unfair disadvantage & may have led to cars rejoining before him. Can’t imagine the rule makers ever envisaged that scenario though!!

You’re right though; Lewis was between a rock & a hard place having to make the call without the benefit of knowing how the others would react.

Disappointed for Vettel disqualification and Bottas penalty today. Stewards getting far too involved in the sport at the moment for my liking.

I don’t think they could change the tyres until the race had restarted, but they all obviously saved the pit entry time which is substantial.

How did it work for the cars leaving the pits? Was it ‘first come first served’ or did they all leave in the formation they entered in? Mercedes’ pit garage was closest to the pit entrance wasn’t it? So couldn’t Hamilton theoretically have left the pits in last position regardless? (That’s quite a lot of questions, apologies).

You can change tyres after red flag... even compound. Is this different when on wet/inters? If not, why did no one pit?

I’m not sure exactly what went on in the pits because the tv was showing the restart with one car on the grid whilst all the action was in the pit lane.

I assumed from how quick they went in/out that they just cracked on in the order they went in, but you raise a good point that there must’ve been some order changes and the Merc garage is at the back so feasibly he would have had a massive train of cars blocking his exit. Now that would have been a cock up

The race was certainly well choreographed for excitement this week, but Vettel must've been supposed to let Hamilton squeeze past him just before the finish - perhaps that Hamilton/Alonso dance was allowed to play out for a lap or so too many? - to comply with the race's result script. ;)
