Sure I read the clubs request the long trips for midweek.
Can’t remember why.

Barrow to Preston is long enough but that's a hell of a trip. I've just google mapped it and it suggests 5hrs 40mins drive time.

They do. It's likely Barrow will go down today. Had it been a Saturday afternoon they would have needed a hotel stay.

thats understandable re team hotel, however its the fans who I feel for, the likelihood being two days off work

Fans are never considered though.

Brighton v Burnley in 2005/06 was due to be played in midweek but we'd both been knocked out of the FA Cup so Brighton suggested playing it on 4th round day (a Saturday). Burnley refused.

I remember going to watch us get beat 1-0 at Brighton (I'm sure Nogan scored) in midweek and it felt a lot longer going home after a defeat !!
I used to think a 6hr drive was a long trip then I came to America where anything under 12 hours is seemingly considered "around the corner"

Nogan scored twice against us down there but that was Boxing Day 1992. I think the game you refer to was in 1995/96 when Nogan was a Burnley player.

Yeah I was at the boxing day game, we stayed with relatives in London for Christmas so that was a short trip. I knew Nogan was involved in 96 but my memory is shocking !! April 96.

And a miserable night too - probably the last time I went to the Goldstone Ground.

They should go back to the bottom 2 leagues being sorted on a North and South basis.
Save all Clubs a fortune on costs, which they clearly need, save fans a fortune as mentioned and would mean more local games and better crowds.
Makes sense to me but will never happen.

Agree and same here. At least we didn't get wet on the open terrace !

I’ve never quite got my head around how promotion/relegation works with that though.

If the “regional” winners get promoted, what happens if it’s 2 “Southern” teams that are relegated from the Chanpionship?
Does the northernest southern team get relegated to the northern league?

That’s exactly it, still goes on in the Conference North and South, for example Hereford and Gloucester are in the northern section.

I think they fudge it. When FCUM were in the Conference North (or equivalent) Gloucester City were also in there, for example. Gloucester is nowhere near Manchester and certainly nowhere near York, Guiseley etc.

If they do they'll pass Exeter at about Hilton Park. ;)

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I think Port Vale and Coventry both had spells in either division as needed.

The old divisions 3 north and south were before my time but I'm sure Walsall used to keep moving from one to other dependent on which teams had been relegated from the second division.

They did Tony, a club could be in North one year and South the following depending on who was promoted/relegated. Still happens in the Conference North and South.

Its certainly a long drive midweek, I've just got to Paignton ( 30 mins past Exeter ) and it took 5 hours, which is fantastic compared to our journey home last time which due to a couple of RTA took 9 hours.

Of course it will, hadn’t thought of that. Just been looking at those two leagues - so southern biased that Hereford are in the north league.

I’ve been up to Aberdeen and back today, on on way home I saw Exeter team coach just before J 36, so, unless they’ve been staying in Preston/Lancaster for the afternoon, they’ve gone straight up for the game?

For a club the averages probably under 5000 that is an excellent effort by their supporters

I read clubs prefer this so on a Saturday they'd would more than likely have a closer game, derbies etc allowing for a higher attendance at the weekend.

Kings Lynn won National League north not too long ago - they're probably far enough from anywhere to merit a league of their own with Norwich, which must be the least motorway connected away day.

I always take my passport to Norwich - it takes that long I'm convinced we must have left the country.
