1960s goalies

Younger readers please look away now...
Struggling to get back to sleep last night so instead of counting sheep I started counting... First Division goalies from the early 60s, when I started watching Burnley.
Goalkeepers were so synonymous with the clubs they played for, so much so that in my half-awake state I could still bring to mind quite a few
Burnley - Adam of course
Rovers - Harry Leyland
Bolton - Eddie Hopkinson
Preston - Fred Else
Spurs - Bill Brown
Man U - Harry Gregg
Man C - Bert Trautmann
Everton - Albert Dunlop
Liverpool - Tommy Lawrence
Villa - Nigel Sims
Wolves - Malcolm Finlayson
Wednesday - Ron Springett
Fulham - Tony Macedo
Funnily enough I never thought of Gordon Banks at Leicester, and no Arsenal or Chelsea keeper came to mind
Then I fell asleep

Peter Bonetti at Chelsea immediately springs to my mind, but when he started playing I wasn't certain, so I checked and amazingly he begun his Chelsea career way back in 1960, and had 2 spells at Chelsea, the 1st lasting 15 consecutive seasons, and then his 2nd for a mere 3 seasons, he even played a couple of games for Woking in 1986, when he was in his mid 40's.

Ex Burnley keeper Jim Furnell, from Clitheroe, was Arsenal's regular keeper in the mid 1960's before losing his place to Bob Wilson ... After a two year spell at Rotherham, he spent his final 6 seasons at Plymouth Argyle, and in 2007, was voted Argyle's greatest keeper ..

I'm sure most will have seen it, but BBC North West were doing Vox-Pops in Liverpool asking for memories of the FA Cup 5th Round tie between Everton & Liverpool in 1967, when reporter Stuart Flinders stopped an older gent, " I played in it ! ", it was Tommy Lawrence ...
It's on " Youtube " if you're interested ...

Ron Springett’s brother, Peter, was keeper at QPR and in 1967 they swapped clubs. Surely a rarity for brothers.

That is such a superb clip and you could see the pride in his face when he answers "I played in it". How lucky was the reporter to bump into someone who played in the game. I think Tommy Lawrence is sadly no longer with us but that short interview a reminder of different times.

Jim Furnell once gave me lift from BGS after I missed the school bus and had no cash. Would have been a fair walk from Padiham Rd to Fulledge. I was hitch hiking and couldn’t believe who stopped for me. He was going to the Turf so it was perfect. Remember it was gold colored big saloon car like a Ford Zephyr and he had loads of football club badges on his sun visor.
Now those were the days. Thanks Jim

Didn't Sprake regularly break the crossbar, by hanging out of it before the match started?

No his last Burnley appearance was 14 March 1959 at home to West Ham, so he never played for us in the 1960's, mainly due to the injury he sustained playing for the Football League against the League of Ireland, he suffered a broken leg in that fixture, his 2nd such injury within 3 years, and sadly he couldn't recover a 2nd time, and had to retire aged just 30.
Reading about his 1st team debut, and how he conceded 5 at Aston Villa, this once again illustrates how you can't judge a player on first impressions.
Imagine the furore if this MB had been around in those days, and yet he went on to become one of our greatest ever goalies, and he was also voted keeper of the tournament in the 1958 WC.

Bill Glazier at Coventry.
In the late 60s and early 70s I was learning to play in goal and could have probably told you the keepers (and reserves) of pretty much all the teams in at least the top 3 Divs.
Easy because Keepers used to stay with teams forever.

Reading this thread and remembering that in the 70s we had Shilton, Clemence, Stevenson, Parkes, etc., has made me sad. No wonder the PL is filled with foreign keepers. Our current crop are shocking by comparison.
