Great, entertaining batsman of the 1960s, former England captain Ted Dexter has died aged 85.

A classic English gentleman remembered for flashing 70 scores not 100s which win you Tests.

The England cricket captain for many years and seemed to be a fixture in a time when it was very much a gentlemen's game.

"Ted Dexter batting/bowling Ted Dexter shaving" which was a regular advert on TV for many years.

He certainly was a great,and, entertaining cricketer. I remember seeing him batting with the equally great Colin Cowdrey. Dexter was flashy, hitting the ball as hard as could and looked to be scoring much quicker than Cowdrey who was a sublime timer of the ball and thus, didn't need power. They both scored at about the same rate. One minute Dexter crashing the ball through the covers for four and the next minute, Cowdrey just leaning into the shot sending the ball to the cover boundary also for four. Great stuff!
RIP Ted Dexter.

I have followed Sussex Cricket Club for about 60 years now.

And the sole reason for that is because of Ted Dexter. What an elegant batsman he was.

I’ve just read that he was also a pilot and flew himself to Australia. Interesting and varied life

Remember seeing him bat well on a Saturday at OT against the Aussies in the first ever Teat match I attended in 1964. As mentioned if he stayed at the crease he was very entertaining. RIP Ted Dexter.

RIP Lord Ted - Comments from mkmel earlier mirror exactly my position. Born and bred in Warwickshire so I should have no allegiance to Sussex whatsoever but I too have followed/supported them for 60 years simply because of seeing Ted Dexter as a kid. (Jim Parks was pretty damn good too as was the great John Snow). As others have said Dexter was a very elegant and most attacking batsman, decent bowler too, and VG fielder. In fact an excellent all round sportsman who I understand could have been a prof golfer had he not gone into cricket. He, and the Sussex team of the early/mid sixties mastered the limited overs game when it first appeared as the then Gillette Cup. Like many others as a kid I suppose, I was always Ted Dexter when I could persuade my Dad to bowl tennis balls at me in the back garden - with chalk wickets drawn on the back gate and some cut up lino tied round my legs as pads !. Those were the days when TV test match coverage started at something like 1232 on the BBC with Peter West commentating. You then got a bit of coverage in the afternoon (shared with Wimbledon in any July tests). I well remember scoring rates were based on the number of runs scored per hour and Jim Swanton used to do a summing up at the end of the day. In later years Lord Ted used to do some commentating too and I thought he was good at that too. Like Fred Trueman he always said what he thought. A sad loss - so let's hope we can finish off from a great day's cricket yesterday with a fitting victory over India - just for Ted's memory.

Cowdrey was a wonderful batsman, full of classic shots, but I always laugh at how he would have coped with today's cricket given the size of him.

Dexter though was a very productive batsman, scored his runs quickly, and would have also been a great white ball cricketer today.

He captained England but was actually born in Milan.

Unfortunately Cowdrey senior did like his drink so didn’t move as quickly as he would have done without.

One of England's great characters was Ted, averaged almost 48 in tests, which isn't too shabby. Plus he was a handy bowler, 66 wickets at an average of just under 35.

RIP Ted.

I remember being taken to Lords as a schoolboy to watch Ted Dexter play in a Test Match when he was on the verge of scoring 100 before lunch. As we entered the ground for the afternoon's play there was a deafening sound of applause as Ted Dexter made his way back up the pavilion steps. He was replaced by the Middlesex batsman Peter Parfitt who seemed to spend around 2 hours scoring a dozen runs.

It was definitely a case of after The Lord Mayor's Show.

Parfitt was one of the players who had absolutely no time for Dexter but Parfitt was a professional and Dexter was one of the gentleman amateurs.
