Oldham suspend ticket sales

Post by ClaretTony » Wed Sep 08, 2021 2:26 pm

All is not well at Boundary Park with supporters protesting against the owners. The last two home games have been interrupted with protests, throwing of tennis balls at one and a peaceful pitch demonstration at the second when they went 3-0 down against Barrow.

The club have responded.

Tickets for Leyton Orient (a) are no longer available online but can be purchased in person by a season ticket holder (one per person).

Tickets for Hartlepool (h) are no longer available online or in person and season ticket sales have also been suspended.

So it appears that the owners, rather than discuss the issues with fans, are retaliating.

Guess the Gate should be fun there.

Only a matter of time before the end for them sadly.

Hopefully not I don’t want any team to do a Bury.

Oldham are in a real mess from what I've read, and it's incredible to remember they were a real force in the early days of the PL under Joe Royle.

I only hope they can somehow resolve their problems with the owners, for to lose a 2nd greater Manchester club following Bury's recent demise would really hit the area hard.

The sad state of football when Man City bought a player for 100 million and a club 8 miles away is going to go bust.

City & United could of saved Bury and not even have noticed the money it would of cost them.

Anyhow, fan ownership and affordable salary/transfer cap is the way forward, but this won't happen.

And the Neville brothers whinged and whinged about people helping Bury, the club they support, while at the same time they were chucking money into a club five miles down the road. Having said that, why should they or a big club offer to help Bury? No, the big clubs couldn't have saved them, unless they'd kidnapped Dale and locked him away for ever.

Horrific state of affairs, hopefully it doesn’t come to them going out of business I know some Oldham fans and like any other small town northern club it’s part of the community

Exactly this and the same with Oldham. It is all well and good saying United, City, Liverpool etc should be helping these smaller clubs in the north west, but while they have the current owners still in charge nothing will change.

Even with new owners things take a long time to fix, as we are seeing at Bolton.

Living in the borough it is sad to see as still loyal season ticket holders in the village. Will this be their 1987!

Simon Jordan discussed it on talksport and he reckons the owner was naive when he bought it, he has put 5 million of his own money it but that has not even touched some historic debts, frightening. I quite like Oldham I always think they are squeezed though so near so many other clubs.

I've no issues with Oldham and my best mate many years ago at uni was an ardent fan, but the writing on the wall there looks ominous and has for some time. We used to think clubs in a mess would always be saved at the 11th hour, but after Bury (in particular) we know that the unthinkable actually can and does happen. I really hope it doesn't happen there as well. it depends if the owner is a "Steve Dale" type or just a well meaning guy who got in way over his head. The goings on over the past 12/18 months point to him being something of the former, sadly.

Didn't this type of thing happen at Palace when Goldberg bought the club? Life-long fan, very successful businessman but was too optimistic when buying the club from Noades. I've just looked it up and Goldberg paid £23m for Palace in 1998. But he ended up being unable to pay Noades the full amount. Terry Veneables was there on a "lucrative contract". Odd that.

I watched the BBC documentary about Bury recently. The new owner came across like quite an unusual character to put it mildly. Wonder what his motivation behind buying the club was?

the bubble will never burst whilst folk still subscribe to sky and the like.

so many people complain about what is happening to football yet have standing orders that provide its downfall.

bury and oldham? it could so easy be us.

No interest in football, didn’t even know Bury had a team but didn’t Dale pay £1 for the club and thought he could profit from it?

Certain clubs will always be on a knife edge if they spend more then they have coming in, it was a downward spiral for Bury and years ago you could buy seats there to help them out, Stan did, it's like putting a plaster on a gaping wound and the patients gets up and does exactly the same thing that caused the cut.

Back in 2002 when we played a friendly to help them raise money and hardly anyone turned up. We, through the message board I think, bought some seats.

This current crisis was started by previous owner Stuart Day. They had a totally unsustainable wage bill and it always looked as though it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

When Day’s property company ran into trouble the writing was on the wall. He sold the club to Dale for a pound just before his business collapsed owing £27 million.

Find it very hard to feel sorry for Oldham… the club that more than any other tried to pull up the Premiership gangplank as soon as they reached the top table. Their fans were as up themselves as Rovers and Bolton became. Far as I’m concerned I’d much rather see Bury remain in the League than Oldham.

As well as the unsustainable wage bill mentioned that some owners just run up, FFP although not about at there first crisis is toothless and the fit and proper person test....well !!.

Day didn’t expect his company to crash and got carried away bringing in players they simply couldn’t afford. We could have been in the same state when Flood’s company went similarly but thankfully it coincided with us reaching the Premier League

I think Brendan was on a bit of an ego trip, I remember his cringeworthy tele interview saying how he promised his wifexa diamond every time he buys us a player or words to that effect, who knows though what would have happened if he had of sold Modus before the credit crunch.

The owner was on TalkSPORT today but I got a bloody call when the interview started. Did anyone better it? White said in his intro that the owner was frank and honest…although I wasn’t going to hold him to that comment :)

I listened to it, I rate Simon Jordan on the radio with his business and football experience he has the ability to get around the waffle and drill down into the facts, the owner sounds like a naive business man perhaps he saw an opportunity to buy a club and sell it on but the historic debt is crippling them. I think we have a Bury 2 situation now because who will buy what is in effect a money losing debt machine.

Re: Oldham suspend ticket sales

Post by ClaretTony » Thu Sep 09, 2021 1:33 pm

Darragh MacAnthony, owner at Peterborough has had his say on the Oldham situation.

"I've got history with the owner of Oldham so there's no love lost there, but it's a good club," said MacAnthony.

"I'm not sure what his MO (modus operandi) is or what his end goal is but whatever his plan is, it's not worked has it?

"So when you've managed to alienate the majority of your fanbase you're not doing a good job as an owner, so maybe it is time to find another owner.

"I'm not sure what you're waiting for.

"Protests are affecting your gates. The best way fans can get rid of you is by voting with their wallets so if they're not buying tickets, if they're not buying commercial stuff, they're not buying stuff in the shop, what is the point you being there?

"It's a bit like being in a marriage where your wife hates your guts and you're coming home and sleeping in the spare bedroom every night and she doesn't want you in the house. How long are you going to hang around for? I don't get it myself.

"If Posh fans turned on me in that way I'd find a buyer and I'd be out of there, high tailing out of there. Because there's no way I'd want to be somewhere where I'm putting my money into it where I'm not liked or wanted."

I like Jordan - he’s one of the only ones worth a listen to, on Talk Sport.

That said, I do find myself wondering what the hell some of the words he uses are. At first I thought he must have had a wide vocabulary, but on checking some of the words, it seems he just makes them up to sound more intelligent.

Oldham...Troubled Times

Fans calling for their owner, Moroccan businessman Abdallah Lemsagam to sell the club, citing incompetent leadership as the reason they now sit rock bottom of the league.
There's been 4 pitch invasions at home games this season. Boss Keith Curle calling for unity.
However, the owner is insisting he ain't gonna sell up.
Founder members of the PL too.

You would think the longer the owner hangs on, the less the club will be worth. Unless he intends to flog the ground for a supermarket. Councils need to slap an order on all football grounds, in order to protect against any such actions.

For years Burnley were blamed for not helping Accrington Stanley as they folded, but the club has always insisted they were willing to match any bale out offered by Rovers, but Rovers turned Accrington down.

Bury was a time bomb, how precarious they had been is demonstrated by then non league Accrington playing a fundraising friendly for their football league neighbours. Afterwards Bury seemed always to be boom or bust, and a dodgy owner was always going to take them to the wire.

Oldham seem from outside seem to be on a similar trajectory. A warning for Burnley to be careful what they wish for- Oldham thought they were set for generations in the Premier League as lately as the 1990’s.
