Personalised Number Plates

I don't get them at all, appears to be an ego trip to me, those that have them may have good reasons and of course that's fine. Don't they also cost £500 ?

Wonder what the motivation is to advertise your initials/name ?

Disclaimer - BFC plates are exempt from any criticism at all and are absolutely fine by me !

Totally agree. Don't really understand those plates where they are using numbers for letters and probably nobody (other than themselves) knows what the name is supposed to be!

PS - I understand D1CK. ;)

They are a bit of fun but largely just vanity. Some are funny though. People like to pass them off as an investment but in reality they don’t become an investment unless your spending thousands.

I don’t mind them but when people change bits of them, add black screws in as dots and spell out their name in a dodgy sort of way it really looks like your taking it too far. Even worse if they are those awful raised letters plates.

Totally pointless but each to their own I guess. But what’s the crack with people who have the model of their car on their number plate? How daft is that.

They can be purchased for just a couple hundred quid, sometimes even less.
It's just a vanity thing, I don't see it any different to when people "name" their house.

I think JCB buy up any that have JCB on them, which annoys my cousin who has the same initials

People who have one to match the vehicle model will pay more, but again it's vanity and if they've got the money...

I always laugh at what's a normal plate but the numbers/letters have been spaced differently so it looks like a private plate, shame the normal coppers don't bother stopping those cars, it's illegal to do that to normal plates.

 It’s the people who don’t understand number plates are normally in the structure CC55 CCC and get the idea that it says their name when it advertises to everyone else that their car is older than it is. That’s another thing I don’t like, people hiding the age of their car with them.

Wouldn't motorists driving such cars be pulled over by the Plod and receive a fixed penalty fine?

In fairness, a number plate is actually visible a lot of the time. I can’t say I have ever looked at someone’s NI number as I walk past them.

Personalisation. Nothing wrong with them although someone would spend over 10k on one I’m not sure. Why have alloy wheels and extra trim on the car ?

The plod don't tend to bother that much with the screw location for some reason.
The raised gel lettering is perfectly legal at present

I'm not sure why personalised number plates should bother anyone.
If I was to have one (I don't), the one I would choose costs the standard £250.

I vaguely remember when John Gregory was Aston Villa manager he paid about £30k for V1 LLA.

Was that an offer or a valuation? I’d be surprised if someone would pay that, although maybe suited to a litigation solicitor.

Lots of these knocking round Colne Rd spelling out the names of the driver screaming around in their beemers (also used to hide the fact that some are old cos you know... it'd be cooler if people thought it might be a newer one innit).

Walked past a convertible Merc in Rawtenstall last week that had somethign like BO55 V1 on it or something.

I don't mind them ordinarily, and you do see a lot of the BFC ones around - as well as other teams like LFC or EFC if you're in scouseland, however there's no doubt that some of the ones about could be loosely translated to BELLEND

The most enjoyment I've ever had on a football message board (Preston board) was when Saxo was threatening to come to Nelson to smash my face in.

We even convinced him that folk were following him around a supermarket (can't remember which one) and staking out his house in white transit vans.

Footymad was great back then. :)

You say that, but coincidentally, the firm that I worked for had an estate to deal with which had a plate "LAW 1" to sell and couldn't get a decent offer for it.
The plate was worth more than the car in theory, but we found that timing was more important. There are knobs out there that want knobish numberplate to help with their lookatmeism, but you then need them to want it at the right time. Why would they be looking when they already have KN 013 on their BMW already?

In the 1970’s the Burnley mayor had HG1 on the official car. The plate was offered to Hughie Green for £50,000 but he didn’t buy it.

I’m waiting for the young posters to ask “who is Hughie Green?”

If I'm on a long journey I keep my attention by doing anagrams of car number plates that pass by thus I'm very interested in personal plates. One of the best I've seen was on the M6 northbound and I think Arsenal were the visitors to the Turf. It was a sporty looking Merc with a red and white Gooners scarf in the back window with the reg 505 EXY. They had changed it slightly to 50 5EXY which I thought was clever and amusing.

My thoughts too. I don't have a personalised plate, but I've no issue with folks who do. However I definitely think SOME are illegal the way they've been arranged and plod should be hotter on them, especially if it throws speed cameras etc off their scent.

Moving the letters about illegally or using illegal fonts is just tacky IMO. These are often on cars with heavily blacked out windows. Using initials and names with standard lettering looks fine as do business names for promotion. There are quite a few outside Turf Moor including Barry Kilby’s which I think looks good. I’m sure some on here would like to tell him and some of the players it looks knobbish ?
