Re: Maxwell Cornet
Very good debut, although made easier by the fact that we were dominating the game. Unlucky not to cap it off with a goal or assist. Promising signs and encouraging that our players were looking to get the ball to him at every opportunity.

Terry Cochrane was the first Burnley player who did step overs. I think Glenn Little used to do this as well.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 5:36 pmI can’t remember the last time we had a player doing step overs

Re: Maxwell Cornet
Without wanting to go overboard about this guy, he did enough in his 35 minute cameo to suggest he'll be a fan favourite.
Finally we might have someone else apart from Dwight that can give the opposition something to think about, and that's what we've sadly been lacking for a good few years.
I can see Cornet soon adding assists and goals, and if he can supply those he really will make a difference to our fortunes.

Looked full of confidence and skill.
But going to hold off until we see a him start a couple games, coming on for your debut is always going to boost a player.
IF keep up that kind of performance we've got a real player on our handd.

Definitely potential there and nearly had the dream start.
Tired quickly so still work to be done on his fitness . I can see where the Warrior description comes from and should be a good addition.

Fast feet, very direct, can shoot with both feet and looks up for it and passionate.
A few loose passes due to, let’s be honest, coming from a more lackadaisical league. Can’t get away with that in this league, but Dwight has 100 games and he is still giving it away in silly positions. Defending off the ball needs work.
On the whole a fantastic debut. If his shot had gone in the roof would have come off. Could be a fan favourite as long as he settles and is happy giving us 2-3 years.

That’s not a complaint. At 1-0 down, it’s exactly what we needed. I just worry it’ll mean Sean won’t trust him from the start.

Wow. Some over the top comments on a cameo performance. Let's look at him after 10 games and then comment. You don't get much for 13m these days in the Premier league. I'm going to be controversial and say that I wasn't too impressed, but hopefully when Maxwell settles in he will be better than Dwight or Johann. However he clearly isnt a Maximam or Traore.

He doesn't need to be the next Pele, he just needs to be a threat like McNeil so we have more than one outlet.
They say a sign of a good player is when others play better around them, when he and Vydra came on suddenly our players played better, Brownhill in particular was fantastic.

Re: Maxwell Cornet
He’s been in the country for a week and in his half an hour on the pitch he’s changed the feel of a game, played on the left, played on the right, nearly scored, found a lovely cross which nearly got us a last minute equaliser and put in a few decent challenges. Also his teammates (Tarky in particular) seemed to be looking for him at every opportunity which suggests he’s been looking good in training.
You don’t have to think he’s a world beater, but how can you not be impressed?

He came on and lifted everything both on and off the field. He was everywhere, including doing some important defensive stuff, and it was the first time in ages I can think of us making a sub and it actually making a difference. The only thing he didn't do was score with probably our best chance of the game and that really would have been the icing on the cake.

It's probably the first time in years we've had a new player that's created real excitement so that in itself meant bringing him on gave everyone a real buzz.
As for how good he's gonna be I'll reserve judgement until he's had a real run of games. For those who find this kind of opinion negative just consider how you'd feel if he'd have come on and struggled and people on here started writing him off.

Traore was electric, beating men for fun and ultimately crossing it 15 foot above every bodies heads, hence he was bloody awful.
Re: Maxwell Cornet
Great to see him come on and he did well. It certainly lifted the crowd. I just wish he'd managed that goal which i though we deserved. Now though we have three left footed wingers. One right footed if you count Lennon.
Re: Maxwell Cornet
Bownhill is obviously better when allowed to go forward. He seems to relish that and it showed in spells yesterday, when we tried to play through the middle more. Maybe SD ahckles him too much sometimes.superdimitri wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 3:57 amHe doesn't need to be the next Pele, he just needs to be a threat like McNeil so we have more than one outlet.

Re: Maxwell Cornet
We need to do something to get more from Brownhill, consistently. He certainly improved after the introduction of Cornet and Vydra, but that was on the back of 50/60 minutes of being pretty poor (Westwood too).
Im not certain what the issue is with our midfield, but it definitely seems much easier for the opposition to cut through it, than has been the case previously.
Have we been worked out, are the wingers not coming inside to get more bodies in the centre, are Westwood and Brownhill not working?
Whatever it is, it needs sorting because the space that the opposition has to play in puts us at a big disadvantage.
Re: Maxwell Cornet
Certainly the most exciting debut we’ve had for a while. Let’s hope the promise is realised.

Well it’s the most excited I’ve been on the turf for years. Great debut but I’m sure he will spend this week working on tracking back
Re: Maxwel Cornet
He seemed instantly comfortable playing left midfield/wingback and seemed to have a good understanding with Taylor. The problem going forward might be who is going to play right midfield/wingback?
McNeil can play there but is better on the left, JBG has lost confidence to take the full back on and passes back/sideways far too often. I suppose we need to try Cornet on the right wing with McNeil on the left and see if he looks just as comfortable on that side.
Team could well evolve over the next few weeks as
Pope
Roberts Tarks Mee Taylor
Cornet Brownhill Cork McNeil
Wood Vydra
I’d play Cork for the first 60 minutes then Westwood

Re: Maxwell Cornet
Who has Dyche stifled?
Tarkowski for one. The argument against mine on the other thread last night was that he plays in such a deep defence he isn’t tested. No doubts in a more expansive team Tarky would have evolved differently. I still think he is better than players like White but our style limits his potential nonetheless.
Dyche would of course argue with some justification that it’s the team that matters and success in general. We know though that the tactics can be risk averse and some would say boring. I think we should all want Cornet to retain that effervescent style, (e.g. not told to avoid too many risky forward passes) but recognising there is a time and a place.
Reasons for optimism - after going 43+ games since a last goal or assist from a sub we nearly had a few yesterday - Cornet’s shot (a worse miss than I realised at the time), his cross for Jay etc. It’s good evidence he could transform our fortunes, though we need Wood back on form primarily.

Dyche has stifled Tarkowski? What a load of Rubbish. Dyche signed Tarkowski from Championship side Brentford and 2 years later he played for England. That’s some top class stifling right there.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 12:01 pmWho has Dyche stifled?

Candidates are -
Cornet - but SD seems to want to play him on the left
JBG - But reluctant to take anyone on as you say
McNeil - might be better in the middle of a midfield five
Roberts - could be a decent option
Lennon - in certain circumstances

Re: Maxwell Cornet
Having watched it back, Cornet was promising in a lot of ways. Going forward he has something different, two footed and a tidy player. He never really got out of a jog and was making tomiyasu look slow so nice to have some pace. I liked the fact he also won a few headers, tackles and free kicks as well. However, I don’t expect he’ll be starting in the prem just yet because it does look like he’s learnt some bits of the shape, but at other times was a bit lost. He got a great reception from the crowd and team who seemed to want to get the ball to him.
Long term, I’m excited so see what he can produce.

Re: Maxwell Cornet
Hi everybody!
It's amazing that we've got this player on our hands and hopefully we'll be able to sign a few more of his quality.
He'll have a big task on his hands settling into a foreign land, learning a new language and he could do without unnecessary pressure.
His pace adds an extra dimension to our play and could help open up defences in way that we've struggled to find since Defour left. But he'll also have a couple of off days when he plays badly or things just don't work out.
I'm as excited as anybody but let's find the right balance. There's a line to be drawn between legitimate excitement and heaping responsibility onto a single player. The support he received from and inspired out of the crowd was truly uplifting. In everyway possible.
But there is a balance to be taken. Let's make sure we're not burdening this fine young footballer with heavy expecations as he's settling into a new life. Let's cheer him on and show him how proud we are to see him wearing the Claret & Blue.

Re: Maxwell Cornet
A few things that stood out for me after watching him on Saturday.
Half time kickabout, he was taking Bardsley's punts from out of the sky and killing it dead, he did this 3-4 times. Obviously got a good touch.
When he was beckoned to come on, he couldn't wait to get on the pitch. He wanted the ball and seemed confident in his own ability. It's a shame he missed that chance as I think we'd have gone on to win it if that had gone in.
Seems to play with a chuckle in his boots, and (as others have said) seemed to improve the players around him.
Looked genuinely devastated when we lost.
Obviously needs to learn the way we operate, and also get up to Premier League speed, but he seems to have the Defour X factor about him.
I think he'll be a hero

Re: Maxwell Cornet
Promising start to his career at Turf Moor. Provides something different to the current squad of players and the fans clearly excited by him so provides a lift when he plays. Still early in the settling in period and hopefully he does continue to do so. I think playing him will help with this so I'd give him another 30 mins from the bench against Rochdale (would start him but could get targeted with some robust challenges), but hopefully see him starting soon.

Re: Maxwell Cornet
Yes I was pondering whether he'd start against Rochdale, but as you say he could be in for some rough treatment if he did, so the best option for us is we get a couple of goals ahead, and then make a few changes, but a run out wouldn't do him any harm to get him up to speed with the English game.Sleeping Cat wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 11:30 amPromising start to his career at Turf Moor. I'd definitely consider starting him against Norwich though, that's one of the few games where we'll probably have the majority of the ball, and he and Vydra could well hold the key to breaking them down to earn us a much needed 3 points.
Re: Maxwell Cornet
It's a risk. It's the sort of game where he gets a nasty tackle and is out for 3 months.tiger76 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 12:37 pmYes I was pondering whether he'd start against Rochdale, but as you say he could be in for some rough treatment if he did, so the best option for us is we get a couple of goals ahead, and then make a few changes, but a run out wouldn't do him any harm to get him up to speed with the English game.

I think he either starts and comes off after an hour, or comes on for the second half.

Re: Maxwell Cornet
Really enjoyed his debut.
I'd genuinely forgotten that excitement of seeing a new signing make his debut.
Hopefully he gets a start against Rochdale and scores/assists to boost his confidence and help him settle in.
